GameStop Honored as 'Retailer of the Year'

The Entertainment Merchants Association (EMA) has revealed the winners for its annual Retailer of the Year awards, and not too surprisingly, in the video game category GameStop (the world's biggest gaming retailer) took top honors. Amazon.com was also honored for its DVD/Blu-ray business, while Hollywood at Home was given the Independent Retailer award and Hastings Entertainment, Inc. won the Chairman's Award.

The awards are voted on by colleagues "based on business practices, operational policies, marketing and merchandising programs, customer service, and involvement in EMA."

Places where I live, Gamestop has to be your go to store for games. They are the only one that has the games on time and in stock.

I hear ya. that's why I always go amazon.com+prime. If I don't mind waiting a couple days I get free two day shipping. If I want the game right away I can pay $4 to have it sent overnight and still spend less than I would at a store. And for bigger games they've been offering free overnight to prime members. It's been well worth the price to have amazon prime. It's been nice to see them offering most pre-orders for $56-57 or occasionally less along w/ $10 off a future game purchase last Fall and it looks to be rolling out again for games this late Summer/Fall [Madden, CoDMW2]... ;)

but yeah, you can't count on Walmart and that place is a dump. I can't speak for all but there's SOO many games they don't get at all or don't get until 3+ weeks out. Shopko is awful rarely even getting a new release until Wed-Fri, and Kmart doesn't even know what's going on (they still want $60 for Kingdom Hearts, when the BLEEP was Kingdom Hearts ever $60!?) and there's no gamestop here (though I doubt I'd go there anyway). I learned my lesson years. Don't bother. Go online, save some change, and be ensured you can get the game you want when you want it... ;)

They always rave to the parents in the store about why the 360 is "superior" to the PS3...And the worst part is it's usually untrue bullcrap (they said the PSN goes in and out of connection all the time the last time I was there overhearing them, and that's why MS charges for the online...WTF?)....It's fine to have a preference, but use facts for your opinion, don't present your opinion as facts.

I like the gamestop that is where i live the people their are actaully smart at the stuff and very nice. But for gamestop itself screw the company. Ive heard one of the big reasons people dont like gamestop is because of the people they hire are major fanboys and rude.

Come Gamestop is great. They even open new games so you don't have to.Think of the time you save, get home and BAM game goes straight in your game console..........Actually I changed my mind. They suck.

...try to find a Disc Replay near you. They're relatively independant, their employees aren't under-educated jerks and they carry everything going all the way back to the Odyssey, as well as movies and CDs.

And best of all, they won't ask you for any f*cking pre-orders!!!

you get games already opened
almost 100% of the used games and consoles go back defective
they damn near hold you at gunpoint to reserve a game or buy the game-informer subscription (a magazine that sucks ass)
almost every worker is a fanboy/fangirl
many workers have no knowledge of the product they are in business to sell
oh yeah, i worked there so i know this one too. they will sit their and tell you they played a game and its epic. in reality most times, they have never played it or they know it sucks, hell they may not even have a gaming console to begin with.
oh another thing, they try hardest to sell Microsoft and EA stuff.
you get f**ked with the trade in system, so do developers who also have mouths to feed (i will admit i do buy used games but only for two reasons. to see if i like i title, then i take it back and buy it new if i do or if the game i want is out-of-print)

im on vacction on germany ,there is alot of gamestop in germany, and i didnt excpect that, i though its only in the US.

though its too expensive its even more expensive than the middle east.

there are reasons for what GameStop does. Just because some stores were found out to be playing new games doesn't mean the rest of the stores out there are doing the same. Besides if there isn't any notable damage what's the problem? Next what do you expect them to put on display, a display case, right? The cases out on display have the book and the box art which allows you to get an idea about what the game is like. If you used a 5 month old display case it probably wouldn't have updated information and if I remember correctly they do not give details such as co-op, online play, etc.

they were being investigated because employees taking games home and selling them as new was determined to be corporate policy. A "benefit" to the employees. And the reason it is a problem is because of a little thing called the law. Opening a product automatically makes it used. A used product sold as new is considered fraud. Not to mention that any warranties are not necessarily transferred to the second buyer. That's why a government agency has gotten involved.

Have uninformed employees and managers. Allow your employees to take games home and then push them off as new to customers. Make most of you income from selling used games and accessories that you bought for next to nothing from uninformed sellers. And buy-out all of your competition. Thank God for Corporate America.
