Obviously, the Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, and PlayStation 3 are currently the focus of much of the American video game market, and relative sales charts for the year so far are difficult to calculate.

Therefore, the NPD Group provided us with exclusive ranking data on the top five games for each platform thus far in 2009. (Note: The rankings here do not include limited or collector's edition versions of each game.)

Killzone 2 is the top PS3 seller so far this year...

According to the article: " we estimate that it is nearing 750,000 at mid-year."

I'm not sure if it'll become a million seller or not, but those are great numbers.

I did notice that the PS3 #1 is an exclusive while the Xbox #1 is a multiplat. The one Xbox exclusive (Halo Wars) is the 4th best selling for them.

I'm not sure what to make of that.

FamilyGuy4393d ago

How can games be placed in an order without knowing the limited/special edition sales #s?
Why were the limited editions version of Res5 counted on the 360s list?

darthv724393d ago

Does it matter if the top games are exclusive or multiplat? Who really looks at it more...360 gamers or ps3 gamers or wii gamers?

Nineball21124393d ago

Does it really matter to who? You? I don't know... I'd say you don't care, but others might find it interesting.

Maybe it says something about the availability of exclusives right now for either system, maybe it doesn't... *shrug*

Maybe it shows some insight into the gaming industry in terms of what types of games are being produced and who buys them... *shrug*

Applegate4392d ago

The best selling 360 game of all time is Halo 3.

The best selling PS3 game of all time GTA4 followed by COD4.

There's not much to make of the fact that KZ2 is the best selling PS3 game this year, it was the biggest release on PS3 this year right ?

Nineball21124392d ago

@ Applegate... yep, you're right. KZ2 has been the biggest release on the PS3 so far this year.

And you're correct that Halo 3 is the best selling game of all time on the 360.

So, I guess that tells us that there is still a place for exclusives? It could also tell us that there hasn't been a "great" exclusive for the Xbox this year?

It's just an interesting observation, I think.

What part of the article says that the 360 versions of RE5 includes Limited Edition? In fact, it specifically for both consoles says it is excluded!!!

"I'm not sure what to make of that."

You can obviously draw a few conclusions from that depending on your console leaning. PS3 has better exclusives or 360 really is better for multiplats than PS3 (at least in NA).

Pick whichever suits your inner bias.

I'd congratulate KZ2, Halo Wars, and definitely UFC Unleashed. I'm surprised HW is even up there being an RTS, but good show.

rusgreim4392d ago

Thousands (maybe tens of thousands) of people bought Halo Wars Collectors Edition to get the Halo 3 Mythic maps. In fact, I would venture, more people bought the SE than the standard, if they are Halo fans.

"I did notice that the PS3 #1 is an exclusive while the Xbox #1 is a multiplat. The one Xbox exclusive (Halo Wars) is the 4th best selling for them.

I don't think that just because the exclusives don't sell well makes them bad games, the multiplat titles are usually the big franchises.

IdleLeeSiuLung4392d ago (Edited 4392d ago )

There weren't too many high profile exclusives released for the 360. However, I must say I'm impressed with Halo Wars. It apparently outsold KZ2, which in my opinion should have sold considerably more since it has virtually no competition at release and was hyped to oblivion and not to mention in a genre that vastly bigger customer base. This was the 'it' shooter for the PS3. Heck I bought it on release day!

The 360 has plenty of upcoming exclusives this holiday and frankly I don't care if they are exclusive or not. Only elitists clamour to the idea of we have something the others can't!

i thought people said killzone 2 flopped

Captain Tuttle4392d ago (Edited 4392d ago )

But @750,000 in North America has to be a bit disappointing for Sony. Personally I can't believe that it hasn't sold 1.5 million yet...the game quality and user base is certainly there.

SRU96004392d ago (Edited 4392d ago )

"But @750,000 in North America has to be a bit disappointing for Sony."

Yeah, just a tad. lol

Seriously, Killzone 2 was supposed to be HUGE and sell Playstation 3's by the millions. Eveything was supposed to be "Killzowned" when it was released, and everyone and their mother would be begging for a copy.

Despite the obscene amount of money that was spent developing the game and all of the pretending that it lived up to the hype even months after its release, it still sold poorly.

I think it's safe to assume that Sony is more than a bit disappointed.

StanLee4392d ago (Edited 4392d ago )

Only 1 2009 release has sold over 1 million copies in North America in 2009 to date and that's Resident Evil 5 on the XBox 360. Sales overall have been disappointing. Killzone 2 has done very well all things considered.

IdleLeeSiuLung4392d ago

From what I can tell, KZ2 sold poorly relative to the amount of hype it received for so many years. However, it didn't sell poorly judging by sales alone and did better than Resistance 2 during the holidays.

It is one of Sony's better sold games....

kewlkat0074392d ago (Edited 4392d ago )

I mean this is the US of A, where SHOOTERS roam and usually sell ok for a decent title but for so mething like KZ2 to just manage around 750k is low but far from flop. Look at the top shooters this gen and that should tell you something

Games that are hyped to death with huge budgets and great reviews, just have to live up to it. I can name plenty that have. New Ips and sequels. KZ2 currently, have not or maybe there is something wrong with Sony install-base.(I argue that all the time) but some insist everything is fine.

Claudinho694392d ago (Edited 4392d ago )

im not sure it counts for the whole north america since it says u.s sales...and if by the end of april it sold 677,000 im sure before the year ends it will had sold 1 mil, specially with the new ps3 bundle

rusgreim4392d ago

And is still struggling to sell as many copies as Halo 3 sold on the first day, then yes, I would classify that as a flop.

JeffGUNZ4392d ago

The reason it is a flop because people over-hyped it. People though this was the Halo killer franchise for the PS3, it's not. Like mentioned above my comment, KZ2 still hasn't reached the amount sold in Halo 3 in it's midnight release! Also, Gears sold 3 million it's first weekend, and this game, that was designed for disaster due to morons over-hyping it, didn't shine like everyone thought. The game hasn't hit a million yet, that's shocking for a systems BEST game so far. Sure it's a fun game, but it's no means a Halo Killer or any Killer.

I heard so many times that this game was going to move PS3's off the shelf. Well it did, to the bottom shelf.

kraze074392d ago

KZ2 isn't the PS3's BEST game so far.

cayal4392d ago

Killzone 2 didn't flop. Considering the reviews how could it flop?

And since when is selling over a million worldwide a flop? That used to be the benchmark for 'flop or not' games.
As for Halo Killer, that was fanboys and the idiotic Gaming media (most of which came from the USA) billing it as such. Sony nor Guerilla Games ever claimed it to be the Halo Killer.

Killzone 2 did what everyone expected and it has sold well.
----------------------------- ----

"it still sold poorly."

No, it really didn't.
And sold is past tense, the game is still available.

"I think it's safe to assume that Sony is more than a bit disappointed."

So disappointed they are agreeing to create another Killzone?

Sheesh the unbelievable stupidity of people is astounding.

shawnsl654391d ago (Edited 4391d ago )

man you know the thing that sucks? People like me who have a headache or slight epilepsy can't enjoy games like killzone, infamous, and other flashy games. I notice 7 out of 10 people I know who can't play those games due to those conditions. I play MGS4, platformers, rts, racers, and rpgs without getting a migraine. Wish there was a cure for it..

PS: counter strike never bothered me either, so it must be the flashing lights.

The 3DO and Sega CD sold more games than the PS3

JasonPC360PS3Wii4392d ago

Hell I bet MAC, Virtual Boy, and Sega 32 sold more games :) If Sony gave away free PS3 games it still wouldn't make the top 100 ::D
