Microsoft seen posting sharp profit decline

Microsoft Corp. is expected to post declines in profit and sales for its fiscal fourth quarter next Thursday, as the software giant contends with flagging sales of personal computers bundled with its technology.

Wall Street analysts on average estimate that Microsoft will post earnings of 36 cents a share for the period ending in June, on $14.38 billion in revenue, according to data from Thomson Reuters.

That compares to earnings of 46 cents a share and $15.84 billion in revenue in the same period a year earlier.

The shares have risen roughly 20% in the year to date, slightly ahead of the Nasdaq Composite Index, and were trading at $24.24 Friday afternoon.

Microsoft is facing increasing competition on all sides, which in my opinion is a good thing.

ElementX5389d ago (Edited 5387d ago )

Increasing competition? From who? Google and their Chrome OS? It's doubtful that Chrome will ever compete with Windows. It's basically for Netbooks, which are pretty much useless anyway. Do you think every hardware/software manufacturer will drop everything and support Chrome? It isn't going to change the world. Manufacturers aren't going to support an open source product like Chrome. Look at Linux. How many games support Linux? How about hardware? You have to download user created stuff, compile it, and pray that it works. I took a Linux class last year and installing drivers was a pain. I don't think the majority of people want to deal with the hassle.

um, just one correction: the Google Chrome OS is not only for netbooks. It is just being debuted on them.

this is so refreshing! am I dead and gone to heaven??!! This just shows how Microsoft uses their marketing to continue to lie to the consumers who in the end have no idea of what actually is going on!

Downplaying every rendition of elves over a period of 70+ years? What kind of headline is that?

kythlyn1d 13h ago

That and they're not that great. =_=; Game's too short to really get to know them.

"I won’t make that mistake again." It's impossible to that mistake again, so of course the write won't make it again.

VincentVanBro18h ago(Edited 18h ago)

LMAO what?! Every article that sings DD2's praises just seems off now that I've played it for myself. Its a mid game, 7/10 at best and that is generous. The elves are a joke too, much less interesting than say the Witcher 3's elves or Baldur's Gate 3's elves.

70 percent of devs unsure of live-service games sustainability

With so many games fighting for players' attention and interest losing out over time, time sink games are at risk of eventually losing steam.

It was worrisome to begin with.

It's a niche genre with only a handful of hits that can stand the test of time.

Cacabunga21h ago

I like the sound of that!! I will for sure never support these gaas games.
Sony must be shocked at gamer's reaction, making them cancel a few of these and hopefully go back to the good heavy hitters they had us used to..
now bring on that PSPro reveal and show us some SP 1st party awesomeness.

CrimsonWing691d 17h ago

What’s to be unsure of!? Look at the ratio of success to failure!

DarXyde1d ago

It's pretty ridiculous.

Imagine having a breadth of data at your disposal to see the statistically low success rate of these games, only to be laser focused on the exceptional case studies.

shinoff21831d 16h ago

Yes. Stop all the live service bs.

jznrpg1d 15h ago

Only a few will catch on. You need a perfect storm to be successful in GaaS and a bit of luck on top of that. But a potential cash cow will keep them trying and some will go out of business because of it.

MIDGETonSTILTS171d 15h ago

Helldivers 2 manages just fine…

Keep production costs low… don’t just make custscenes until the mechanics and enemies are perfected first.

Make so much content that you can drip extra content for years, and the game already feels complete without them.

Most importantly: make weapons, enemies, levels, and mechanics that will stand the test of 1000 hours. This might require more devs embracing procedurally generated leveled, which I think separates Helldivers 2 from Destiny’s repetitiveness.
