BioShock's Levine: New Game Is 'Substantially More Ambitious'

Speaking as part of an in-depth discussion on studio culture, correctly staffing up for major projects, and his game design philosophy, Looking Glass Studios and Irrational veteran Levine explained of the philosophy behind the current 2K Boston game:

"When we thought about this project, we accounted for the fact that hiring the staff that we needed to hire would take some time.

And when we thought about the shipping date of the project... We needed a certain kind of length for the title, because we had a scope and ambition in mind which is more ambitious than anything we've ever done. Even more, substantially more ambitious than BioShock. And we knew that was not going to happen overnight."

Awesome! That's what i like to hear. The first Bioshock was a classic!

either an incredible game or a complete disaster.
Ambitious titles have that curse.

Honestly, I've yet to see anything truly 'ambitious' with BioShock 2 in comparison to the first. I hope they come out with something later this year that will actually show us how it is more ambitious than its predecessor.

They created the first groundbreaking Bioshock, a new 2K team is making Bioshock 2.

I wouldn't call BioShock groundbreaking unless you've never played System Shock 2. Now, that aside, regardless of who's making BioShock 2, the gameplay we've seen so far really hasn't done anything truly above and beyond what BioShock did. Being able to mix two plasmids into one is really above and beyond BioShock or is it just a device for perceived growth? How about fighting more, but notably weaker, opponents at once rather than stronger but fewer opponents at once, device or perceived growth?

When I look at Uncharted 2 in comparison to Uncharted with regard to advancement of gameplay and technology, I can see it. When I look at BioShock 2 and Modern Warfare 2, I don't see it.

Now, this doesn't mean it won't be a good game, it just means it's yet to prove to me that it's going to be above and beyond the original game, which is still a great game.

You make excellent points cgoodno.

However, as long as it's AS GOOD as the first one, 99% of people will be very happy. I know I will be, and I'm looking forward to this game.

Bioshock 2 is easily one of my most anticipated games.
