Could Apple TV become a games console?

Tech and gaming industry analysts seem to think so...

A number of games and tech industry analysts have commented on the growing rumour that Apple is set to make its next strategic move into the games industry, effectively turning Apple TV into a games console.

US games industry analyst Michael Pachter recently said: "Apple TV is the device that they can turn into a console...into an entertainment and Internet hub."

MacFormat Reviews Editor Ian Osbourne said: "Apple TV has underperformed ever since its launch, but reinventing the device as a games console could help it find its niche... The infrastructure is already there, with iTunes geared up for selling applications. As long ago as February 2007, former Xbox Live games guru Greg Canessa listed Apple TV as a conversion option when he joined casual gaming legends PopCap Games, so to be honest, I'm surprised there isn't a gaming edition of the device already."

Yes, I've been saying this for some time, they can easily do something like the Appstore for the AppleTV/some sort of that device like Apple's mac mini, with downloadable games for a low price (5 to 10 Euro) and it can take a good share of the casual market that the Nintendo Wii is in now.

If it could integrate something like Natal, that combined with an Appstore like the iPhone has, they have something really new and appealing for consumers.

Until they bring out an Apple Fit Board and an Apple pulse checker they have no chance....

(*thinks hard how that name might related to a throwaway gaming peripheral....)

apple is pretty innovative though so you never know what they might come up with

Remember pippin, Epic fail.

@zoydwheeler - Apples first attempt at a console. Worse than Microsoft first attempt at a console.

Different times, different Apple, different market circumstances.

You can't compare any results from the past with a possible todays try.

Remember Sony failing with MSX together with Philips in the end on the games/home computer market back in the 80's/90's? I even still have my Sony MSX-2 today in my home...

Remember Nintendo failing with the Gamecube last gen? How they came back this gen?

Remember how the Dreamcast failed but still somewhere in the future they could return.

History doesn't say that much.
