NPD June: Fourth Straight Month of Retail Declines, Xbox 360 Resilient

Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Nintendo's handheld DS were the only two systems to post sales increases in retail analyst NPD Group's otherwise disheartening June games industry sales report. Games hardware experienced the sharpest decline in June, plummeting 38% from $617m to $383m year-over-year, while video games software fell 29%, from $876m to $626m. Overall, retail games industry sales dropped 31%, from $1.7 to $1.2 billion, marking June as the worst period yet in a consecutive four-month year-over-year contraction.

The story is too old to be commented.

Xbox Still Winning in the Recession.

but but Rrod?

lmao even with the red ring MS still owns.

2010 is going to be a great year.

dktxx23476d ago

you think that its surprising the 360 is beating the ps3 in recession? Hmm lets see, if I was hard on cash, which looks better? $200 bucks, or $400. Kudos to MS still, but they should be beating the ps3. they'd be real idiots if they managed to let sony outsell them at that price.

And MS isn't winning. The third best selling console still dictates losing.

He`s just happy to be a xbox 360 owner.

Frankly they're hasn't been much in the form of exclusive software for the platform this year but the price it keeping it relevant in the multi-platform battle illustrated by the numbers from UFC and Prototype.

You want to win this generation, it's going to be through multi-platform sales. The 360 is holding onto that with an iron fist.

Tinted Eyes3476d ago

that even though the ps3 is at 400 and the 360 is selling for a dirt cheap 200 by the end of the year their worldwide sales are always about the same even with the ps3 at a steeper price

Lifendz3476d ago

because 360 is selling higher than the PS3? Wow, with logic like that I guess anything can be said to not exist if it sells better than its competition.

Hardware

767k - Nintendo DS
362k - Wii
241k - Xbox 360
165k - PlayStation 3
164k - PSP
153k - PlayStation 2

And for those of you that seem to always forget, please remember that Sony has 3 consoles on the spreadsheet. So before you write your doom and gloom articles and post them on the examiner, just remember that Sony isn't reliant on the PS3 as it's sole source of revenue.

That's weird. I had no idea the Pro and Elite were now priced at $200. That is amazing. Unless you are assuming the only Xbox SKU selling is the Arcade. I am sure you have a source to back up that claim.

Not to pick, but Sony is the one that decided what specs and price to launch the PS3 at. They have also altered the hardware and removed features to bring it down to a realistic price. Microsoft isn't selling better because it's cheaper. They are selling better because they have more options with three SKU's ranging from $199 to $399, more games in their library, and a better online service. The PS3 at $399 is fair given the fact it also plays Blu-Ray movies and has wireless built in. They also have some great exclusives. The problem they are having is trying to bring in more customers at this price teir which is pretty played out. Once they are financially able to lower the price they will increase sales. Just don't think the Xbox 360 sells better because the base model is $200. That is overly simplied logic and doesn't take in many of the actual facts that go into selling a product.

NPD is only for NA. When the rest of the world is factored in the numbers are close. If in 4 more years the 360 is still at an *mil lead then congrats it held on to it's 1-1 and a half lead. Laughing about RROD as if it wasn't a bad thing is pathetic from a consumer perspective. Also saw how you NATTY worshipped some of the worst fanboys on this site. I'm sure they have welcomed you with oopen arms. Congrats. The 360 can win every sales numbers but as long as the PS3 sells enough for the continued support that it has recieved and has given to gamers then BIG F'N DEAL. PS3 is in third place in sales but first in quality software and hardware tech and reliability as well as features, at least to me and 24mil PS3 users.

"The Xbox 360 was the only console to show unit sales growth over June 2008, and both the 360 and Nintendo DS were actually up in unit sales, year-over-year, for the first six months of 2009."

Good job ms.

Lifendz3476d ago (Edited 3476d ago )

Seriously? It's the cheapest of the three and still not outselling the Wii.

KionicWarlord2223476d ago

Huh?

You want me to say bad job ms?

Max Power3476d ago

the last month before they dropped the price because the ps3 was out selling it?

pumpkinpunker3476d ago (Edited 3476d ago )

I paid $399 for my 360 and could have bought a PS3 but didn't. Only one person I know has an Arcade unit. The Arcade isn't their biggest selling unit anyway. The Pro is according to MS.

Sez 3476d ago

Sorry dude. You can no longer run the excuse of " the 360 is the cheapest" BS anymore. As per an article on this site days ago.
