Which console would you choose if price weren't an issue?

Price has always been a point of argument in any console war, particularly in this generation of skyrocketing costs. If you were to remove price from the equation, which console would you choose: the Xbox 360 or the PS3?

I personally play exclusives on PS3 and multiplats and exclusives on Xbox 360 so Xbox 360 is my main console this generation but PS3 is still definitely a must buy also, it has many good games to play...even if only playing its exclusives.

If I had to choose one though it would be Xbox 360.

i didn't choose both coz i needed money for other stuff, but i went for the PS3, and it seems that i did make the right choice for myself.. why?
simple:
currently the only games i play are: WipeOut HD, replaying Uncharted AND CoD4 (mostly CoD4 btw).. there have been games that were much more hyped than these games, yet i only play these..
and before you say "thats coz you havent played any 360 exclusives" i'll have you know that i have, i often go round to a friend's house and play on his 360, so far i havent gotten into any of the games owned by him (GeoW2, Halo 3 and another game, cant remember which).. never got into any of the games.. but i donno if i would have chosen 360 if it was only CoD4.. simply because of paying £40ish for online.. but i seriously would love to own the 360 as well!

I own a PS3 and a 360 and while the 360 does have its positives I do have a preference for the PS3. So, if I could only own one it would have to be the PS3.

The main factors that lead me to prefer the PS3 are:

Reliability
Unmatched first and second party output
Free online service
Outstanding media features like Blu-ray, web browser, etc.
Built-in Wi-Fi, HDMI (my 360 lacks this) and Bluetooth
Oh, and did I mention reliability?

The 360 is a more expensive console to own in the long run anyway. So if cost is an issue, the PS3 represents an even better value.

This is exactly what I represent. I have never understood how someone can afford more than one console these days, nor why someone would pay for another one in the first place. There have always been enough "good" games on every console to this date, enough that is to warrant focusing your hard earned money on that specific console. The minute I got my PS3, I stopped spending money on my DS. With how many features the PS3 has, it was not that hard of a choice to begin with. I was thinking about getting the Wii, but with all said features that have been mentioned above, the choice was clear. I do not think I have ever invested in something that has been so useful in entertaining me and my wife. I am very glad I chose the PS3 and have no intention of getting anything else for a very long time. Makes me actually wish I had picked up Sony's last two consoles when they were in their prime.

The PS3 has so many extra hidden goodies in it, it's really much more high tech than people (xbox fanatics) give it credit for.

While the 360 owners pay ridiculous amounts of money for hard drives, they pay for online...they dont have included wi-fi, card readers, usb ports, blu-tooth, bluray...

On top of that there are over 20 studios developing exclusive games for SONY and working on them as we speak...while the 360 only has what.........3? Multi-plats only look better under a magnifying glass on the 360 so that's really no reason to pick it over the ps3...

I bought my 360 first because it was launched first and have since played my PS3 more due tot he games. I move back and forth from console to console based on the games that are released and at the moment, the PS3 has the games. As for their prices, I bought them both new when they were launched so price is nothing for me when buying a console. I have to have them all.

I own both. I love the xbox for it's online community and i can't begin to count the amount of fun i have had playing games like gears and halo online.

at the same time i like the ps3 for its blu ray playback and some of its exclusives. I am playing through uncharted again at the moment.

If i had to pick one it would be the xbox. its simply the system i like more for gaming. All the extras in the ps3 i have been using for ages on my laptop, the only real bonus is watching movies. I play more games then i do watch movies so hence my preference.

As it stands i can afford to own both systems, so why would i not ? infact i own 2 360's ( one is at my girlfriends place ) and i recently bought a 60gig ps3 for a friend of mine. he had been wanting to get one for ages so i got it for him and told him he can pay me back later.

This generation I decided to go with the Xbox 360 and money was not an issue when I purchased the system. The PS3 is a good system as well, but for personal interest, the 360 appealed to me more than the PS3. So you guys were actually much happier when Microsoft was making all of their games PC/360? That's refreshing to hear. Listen, you guys have every right to be pissed off at MS for making Alan Wake 360 exclusive, but you have pretty much heard what all the PS3 fanboys say about the PC/360 relationship. Microsoft is just trying to increase the value of the Xbox 360 by building up its "true exclusive" library. I for one was very glad that MS was making their games on both PC and 360 because it allowed people with a high end gaming rig to enjoy the game on max settings and with free community mods and such.

Microsoft have almost always delayed the PC versions of games they publish. They did it with Halo, Halo 2 and Fable. It's not really anything new, but it does suck.

It goes to show you that Microsoft realize the PC is a viable platform that does compete with the 360. If it were true what the 360 fanboys say about the PC and 360 both being Microsoft platforms and that games that come out for both platforms are still "exclusive" to the 360 then Microsoft wouldn't treat the PC versions the way they do.

Fortunately, Microsoft have no say when it comes to most multiplatform games that are released on the 360 and PC, which means that we will continue to get most of those games on the PC around the same time as the 360. Splinter Cell Conviction springs to mind.

I agree, microsoft are really trying this gen and are doing alot of things to make good gaming experiences. Sony are just trying to ride off the success of the PS1 and PS2, and do as little as possible, and hoping to take the Playstation name and sell consoles, and as everyone can see its not working as well as they hoped.

I dont own a 360 so you cant call me a fanboy, but as much as i love Sony they need to do more to beat the 360, especially in the online and firmware sector.

I liked how after E3, Geoff Keighley went on stage for the interviews and he asked Schaeffer or whatever his name is, about the lack of games on 360 and what big game they still had in store for the fans.

And Schaeffer or whatever named "Avatar racing" ("we still have Avatar Racing coming") as the big thing and Geoff just laughed in his face at that moment. That about sums up the state the 360 is in.

ive played all of xbox360 greatest hits. all of them back when i was a 360 fan. i know im not missing out nothing. its all hype really. the games are unfinished, buggy, chopped up skams. my favorite game was ghost recon advanced warrior 2 and rainbow 6 vegas and then cod4. guess what its on ps3 and it was free to play online. gears 1 was a boring game of rock, paper and scissors for 20 minutes at a time. halo 3? ha! thats for kids. mass effect was good but glitchy and slow with no replay. ps3 got what matters in my lifestyle. Class and quality with the most useful features for the hardcore gamer.

Well, when you mention RROD and the price of Xbox Live you're not arguing from the point of view of a gamer; you're arguing from the point of view of a consumer. In terms of gaming experience, both consoles are excellent, but the 360, setting aside the price of Live, offers a slightly better online experience. The PS3 is offering better IPs this gen so it's hard for me to guess which I would choose. Blu-Ray so far is still not a selling point for me because I don't have an HDTV.

I was lucky enough to get a launch 360 core back in Nov 2005. I got home about 10:00am, I swear I was calling around to sell it by early afternoon. It kept freezing on me. I had a serious hunch that something wasn't right with it. I sold it to a friend for only what I had dropped on it in bestbuy earlier($580). With a 360 you still have LIVE to buy ($50) and a rechargeable battery pack (20-30 bucks). You'll still be missing WiFi, Bluetooth, a HDTV disk drive (BluRay/HD-DVD), but for all intents and purposes:

PS3 = $399.99
360 = $370.00 minimum

I have both and love both fairly equally. Both have their pluses and minuses. Actually I have all three and the Wii regrettably would get the boot. I bought it day one thinking I was getting one thing and as time went by, realized I had gotten another. Biggest 360 complaint - paying for service/the dashboard ads. PS3 biggest complaint - custom soundtracks/mandatory installs. I know some games have custom soundtracks, but all games have it for the 360. That may not be a big deal for some but try playing a game like Burnout racing to your jams, then play it with that ear bleeding horror show of a soundtrack they give you. Trust me, you'll be racing like your life depended on it. If I had to pick... I dunno, flip a coin.

Reading comprehension is key, ApocalyPS3. Everything he said is true of the 360 in general, not just the arcade sku.

The 360 IS unreliable.

You can't watch Blu-ray movies on it and game developers can't use Blu-ray for their games.

The fact that not every Xbox 360 has a hard drive means that developers can't rely on it being there and can't take advantage of it.

The fact that earlier 360s don't have HDMI output (like mine) wasn't very forward thinking of them.

I owned a 2006 Xbox 360 Premium (as it was called then) until last October when I bought the 60GB and gave my old Xbox 360 to my cousin for Christmas. He hasn't called me up yet about having problems with it. I won't ignore that problems do exist and that there are people who haven't had such luck, but I mean that Xbox went through it ALL! I took it with me on 200 mile trips, I set it up in at least 30 hotels, sometimes my office, and then always bringing it back home and setting it up there too.

The problem is, with most consoles there are a few bad ones that are prone to failing, while the vast majority work the way they are supposed to. But with the 360 it is the exact opposite situation. Not having a hard drive doesn't mean that developers can't advantage of it for people who do. The game can be the same on every disc. All you'll notice is that you can't install it and you won't be able to grab much DLC, if anything. But that doesn't stop devs from OFFERING DLC, hence it can't stop devs from utilizing HDDs on 360's that DO have an HDD.

The difference between a vehicle from BMW and one from Kia is price and performance. But both are scaling together...if Kia offered a vehicle of the same performance of a BMW it would be around the same price. The laws of comparable and competitive pricing will always keep it that way.

You also have to factor in things like customer satisfaction and warranty service. I think the maintenance bills alone on a BMW would cripple most. You guys forget that you have to take care of the vehicle too.

the 20 gig hard drive also concerned me (and was more like 13gigs by the time formatting was done), and i wasn't going to spend over $100 just for the next largest size. if i wanted an HD player, i'd have to buy the HD DVD add on for $150, the separate Wi Fi adaptor was $100, and i'd have to pay $50 a year for LIVE. that's damn near $400 in extra expenses for my particular needs and tastes (HD movies, wireless net connection, online gaming, bigger hard drive).

the Playstation 3, at $600, came with
a built in HD movie player (i was planning on buying an HDTV in the future, so i knew i'd want to watch movies in HD)
a built in Wi Fi adaptor (my TV and internet connection are nowhere near each other, so having built in Wi Fi helped a lot)
free online gaming
even a damn web browser (which i unashamedly admit i use to watch tv shows like Avatar and Lost)
backwards compatibility (i still have a lot of unfinished PS2 games to get through during downtime between PS3 releases)
the 60 HDD is STILL enough for my current needs (though i plan on upgrading the HDD at some point in the future, i guess)

i didn't have to add any other peripherals to the machine in order to get the enjoyment i wanted out of it.

as an investment, i thought the PS3 was the best choice for my own personal entertainment needs.

at it's current price of $400, it's a god damned steal.

most of the people i know that don't own a PS3 want one badly, but they still think it's too expensive. all the folks i worked with at Luxoflux and Vivendi wanted a PS3, but price was an issue (that, and they had drank the kool aid that it has no games).

the 360 is a solid games console, but the PS3 is the total package. gaming, movies, music, downloadable titles, free online, web browsing, social applications like HOME. it's a rather complete entertainment offering, to be honest. just because a few features like cross game chat aren't in it, that's one missing feature out of a sea of features that ARE there.

if i was choosing which console to buy for the first time, i'd STILL choose the PS3.

most importantly, it's software library is more to my liking. it has amazing quality games in all genres (though the RPG genre could use a boosting- but truly quality RPGs take a long time to make, moreso in this newer generation where more assets need to be created to compete).

For those of use who are not blind fanboys it's an interesting discussion point...

When MS launched the 360 it appeared to me that it had done everything right. The 360 was a smart evolution of the work they had done with the Xbox 1.

Sony on the other hand, appeared to not only be shooting itself in the foot, but blowing it's entire leg off!

But as this interesting 'battle' has evolved it's my opinion that Sony have delivered more quality, and have admirably stuck to their plan, which is now paying off. The difficult first year has given way to some of the best games I have ever played, and the quality keeps on coming.

MS appear to be floundering, they want to beat Sony, but underestimated Nintendo, now they want a piece of the Nintendo pie and are scrabbling like crazy trying to crack the casual market - they have no clear strategy other than keep digging in their wallet until they hit gold. All the while Sony have stuck to their guns and released a broader range of games that are not 'in your face' hardcore or casual.

So although we know nothing about PS4/Next Xbox/Wii2 I would currently put my money in Sony's wallet.

And since PS3 comes with a BluRay player that sold individually would cost more than the difference in price, there is added value in a PS3.

I would say its more about which you think is best value for entertainment.

I would go with the 360 because i have had the most fun with it and enjoyed it the most. At the same time i can totally understand why most people would pick a ps3 over the 360. again if price is not an issue and you got all the added extras with the 360 then both systems are very much the same in terms of spec, but the ps3 would win because it has BR player and is the more powerful system ( although i know some people would argue otherwise which i think is foolish ).

I think what would influence more on the choice would be things like what type of games you like playing, what system most of your friends have, which controller you like best etc.

I have both consoles, Had PS3 first then got an Xbox 360 and couldnt believe how naive and stupid i had been (i used to be a fanboy about it)

If i had to choose, Xbox 360 without a shadow of a doubt, Why? well i shall tell you why :)

It is a lot more focused on being a GAME CONSOLE, sure PS3 is an awesome multi-media device (blu-ray films ftw!) but we are talking about game console here people.

Xbox 360 has no hassle, updates almost never happen for the console itself, (the only one i can think of was for the amazing NXE)
And when a game updates, it takes like 10 seconds, on the PS3 the same update for the same game (Fallout 3) took me like 8 minutes to download, 5 to install.. and this ALWAYS HAPPENS, the PS3 always seems to need to patch up and instal and download stuff its so annoying

360 is just more user friendly.

Also I find it a lot more fun, Home has always been awful a buggy boring mess, i really dont see the appeal, but avatars are awesome and the new free 1 vs 100 is genius!

Xbox Live >>>>> PSN, this isn't debatable people, XBL is simply superior, not only does it not have the problems i had with PSN (disconnecting constantly from multiplat games like cod, half the time wouldn't sign me in for no reason) but it has other amazing features such as live sync with xbox.com and xbox.com management and not to mention the party system.

Exclusives! - I think the PS3 has some great exclusives but lets be honest the only real blockbuster for the system this year is uncharted 2

this is the one that does it for me, 90% if not more of all games are Multi-plat, its just the way it is, and there almost always better on the 360

- No FORCED installs
- Better graphics (This has been confirmed a thousand times and i have done tests myself using the same game, same TV, same set up, its true people.)
- Better online, thanks to superior XBL
- in my experience, smoother gameplay/faster loading
- A lot of the time exclusive DLC, even if it turns out to be timed-exclusive (Fallout 3)

So yeah thats me done :)

The 360 IS unreliable, whether you have got the RROD yet or not. Trust me, it is simply a matter of time. Every one of me and my friends has had our 360s die on us. Many of us have had it happen multiple times.

The minor differences between the PS3 and 360 multiplatform games is meaningless in comparison to the way those same games look on the PC. I always have to laugh at 360 owners who think some extremely small difference is important when the PC version is miles better. If you really cared about getting the best version, you would get those games on the PC. The differences between the consoles are insignificant.

Price has never been a factor for me, quality has been. Microsoft lost a prior xbox and xbox 360 owner due to RROD. I wanted next gen and bought a 360 but it RROD on me 3 months after buying it. I sold it and bought a PS3 and then a Wii. Problem is I just don't trust the 360. I know a lot of people who have 360's and every single one of them have been sent back to Microsoft multiple times. Plus, Sony has spoiled me with 0 cost to play on-line.

I chose the PS3 because I was more interested in it's features and exclusive games than I was in the 360's, plus I have a major dislike for Microsoft in general. For my gaming friends, price and patience were an object and they bought 360s before the PS3 launched. They have all since traded the 360s in and gotten PS3s. The only people I know who have one now are my two little brothers, who co-own a 360 and each have a PS3. The whole "all my friends have one so I got a 360 to play online with them" arguement never entered my world.

Well I love both my consoles but I would have chose 360 first. Only reason for that is so that I can chat to 8 of my friends at the same time while playing different games. Now if friends and group chatting wasnt an issue.... I would have to go with the PS3 so I could watch Blue ray, play online for free, download PS1+ classic games, and have extra web browser. I had a choice. I bought a new home and had a space for a GAME/Media room(man cave in U.S).I could buy a 360 elite and get a HD-DVD player or a 60gb PS3. I had priced everything out,considered game titles,add on's and accessories. The 360 elite with its price for online play and it's HD-DVD player was over 200 dollars more. Wifi did not matter,even though its a plus when bringing it on business trips to hotels or a buddies house. So i bought the 60gb at launch and never looked back.I got a 3 year warranty from squaretrade for 35 dollars,so the Xbox360 was 165$ more with its FREE 3 year warranty. After a 2 year period my Blu Ray laser died,Square Trade paid Sony and I had my ps3 back in 8 days. I then decided i wanted an additional Blu Ray player for the living room,and purchased a 80gb for $320.00 from Dell in May with a 3 year warranty from Square Trade(covers Drops,Spills etc) for $40.00 dollars. Still cheaper at today's prices for an Xbox Elite and it no longer has an HD player that is supported. So when all the dust has settled , I believe the PS3(with a square trade warranty) is STILL the best value between the Xbox 360 and the PS3.

Basically, I had enough money to buy any 1 system that I wanted but I could only buy 1 system, and because of personal econ. and finances, I knew I'd be "stuck" with only 1 system for quite a while.

I didn't have and XBOX 1 or a PS2 (I had a Dreamcast and played MMORPG's last gen).

Since I don't feel like typing too much right now, to get to the point, the bulk of my decision was heavily weighted on the reported egregious failure rate of the XBOX 360. There's no way I was gonna buy something so failure prone. I personally wouldn't buy a toaster or kitchen blender if it was known to break alot. It has some nice games, but since I've never had any of my past systems break (Atari 2600, NES, Genesis, PS1, N64, Dreamcast...2 PC's and a laptop, they all work to this day), I just couldn't go into an XBOX 360 with its history. If I bought one and it broke on me, I would deserve what I got....I'm just not that foolish.

I've heard a few people say this, that XBOX 360 is "alot" cheaper.

But as I mentioned, I fairly recently made my decision to to buy an XBOX, and I cited my reason, my main reason anyways, from the reliability factor. That is true, but there was a host of other factors and considerations that I weighed in on....one of them being price.

Basically, my thoughts were this, I certainly didn't want a crappy or lowest end XBOX Arcade with no harddrive...that would render me with an incomplete game system....no way. So, to me, the Pro seemed like the best bet...$299.99. Now at it's most basic, I still would want XBOX LIVE ($50), and I would NEED a battery recharge-pack ($20-$30). So at it's basic core, an XBOX 360 is $370 minimum.

360: $370.00

I just wanted to share that because alot of people seem to get the actual prices confused.

It is very simple. Which console gives you the most bang for your buck. In other words, which console has more value packed in? The answer is very simple...PS3. The fact that you get a game console and blu-ray player in one is enough because that is the better value. You can break it down even further...you have the opportunity to play more good diverse games if you opt for the PS3 over the XBox360. Really the smart thing to do is choose the PS3 and then take the money you would have spent on paying for the PS3 or 360 and put it towards a gaming pc. That way you can play almost all 360 games (which are either on the PS3 or the PC). If you choose the 360 you can't say I can play ps3 exclusives on my pc. Futhermore, PS3 exclusively are usually the best games in their respective genres so you are definitely missing out if you don't have a PS3.

I chose the 360 in late 07' because it had more games available (and upcoming at the time) that I wanted to play.It was a tough decision because I WAS all about Sony and spent 3 weeks researching the net and talking to folks before deciding. Didnt have a original Xbox (I didnt know anyone who did.WE ALL had PS2's).I loved my PS2 and my PS1 before it and I own a PSP.
I didnt care about price.Its been argued here WAAAYYY too much which is actually more expensive. Dont care.I wanted another 4+ year monagamous relationship with a console, like ive done since I had my Colecovision in the early 80's.
I play alot,but dont play enough to justify two or three consoles cluttering the living room.
Now that ive had this thing for almost 2 years,I have no regrets.It hasnt broke on me,and theres still a ton of games I havent bought yet but want to play.
Im missing out on some good games im sure.Uncharted looks neat and Killzone 2 as examples. But I have no desire to play LBP,GOW (have it for PSP),and a few of the other PS3 games that are mentioned alot here.

I like Microsoft's attitude of keeping games in tune with improving and reiterating on old-school gameplay. Halo, Splinter Cell, Ninja Gaiden, etc. are some of the best-playing games in ther genres. Not overly heavy on cutscenes and cinematics. Just pure fun.

Sony traditionally seems more about pushing the movie-like aspect. Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, God of War, etc. More about telling a story in great detail and the "wow" factor. Gameplay tends to take a backseat.

I understand more of these games are becoming multi-platform, but over the last two gens I feel that the companies are generally keeping with these separate philosophies. I prefer old-school gameplay and I trust Microsoft to continue to support that aspect over others, so I would still choose Xbox 360.

Gameplay certainly does NOT take a backseat on Sony's games.
They handle both brilliantly. Storytelling is equally as important as gameplay, games such as Uncharted, God of War, Ratchet and even Jak last gen handled narrative and gameplay perfectly not to mention artistic design.

I think your view of the PS3 is pretty far skewed.

MGS has always been cinematic.
Final Fantasy is on both consoles, so that's not really even logical.
GoW games actually have very few cut scenes. That game is actually kind of simaler to the old school Tomb Raider games. Lots of action, plenty of puzzles, and enough story to keep you interested.

Of course Fable2 and lost Oddyssey dont look as good as Uncharted,thats a given - but what RPG does look amazing whilst not in a cut scene?

Gears does prove the power of the 360 though.
But gameplay is where its at,thus 360 is the winner for me.

Id of course say both but if ur gonna make me chose then ill have to go 360.... I enjoy my ps3 but my 360 is my main console, prefer the games that come to it and the controller its self enough reason for me to go the 360, though ill id miss the pure bliss that is Burnout Paradise on the ps3

I forgot to mention that. I agree the 360 controller is my fave ever. Dualshock has always irritated my index joint after a while. Doesn't seem as ergonomic. And the sticks and trigger on the Dualshock are convex instead of concave.

I really have no problem buying expensive consoles. I use my 10% discount when I bought my PS3 and the only time I even have money is when I use my tax refund for it.

I prefer the Playstation over others, but I did enjoy Gears of War, and Call of Duty 2, and DOA 4 but that's it......

Spec for spec, dollar for dollar the PS3 is a much better bargain.

It's a fairly open platform (peripherals like bluetooth headsets, keyboards, interchangeable hard drives) and now that Sony is selling manufacturing licences for 3rd party peripherals, you will have even more options with controllers etc.

The 360 is a closed system, that forces you to part with money continuously, wether it's by selling you over-priced proprietary hardware like hard drives and wifi adapters or by charging you to play with others online. That's not to mention the shoddy build quality reflected in 30% failure rates in the first 2 years, incredibly loud DVD drives, which magically are over-looked by customers, who've adapted themselves to the seemingly perpetual pack-it-yourself mail-in-and-wait warranty process.

I bought a 360 Elite from a generic box store. Rented and played the first-party exclusives like Halo 3 and Gears. One of those titles was damaged by the DVD drive, and so 30 days later I returned it.

Just my opinion, but the extra $100 you spend on a PS3 pays for more than just a great piece of hardware, but also a piece of mind of money well spent on something that most likely will last the 10 years to come.

People who own a PS3 already made this decision. They bought the PS3 at the highest price of any console even when they could have opted for a cheaper console.

PS3 is this generations Gamecube yes i said it.Where did it all go so wrong for sony fanboys.Lets look at this with logic which most sony fanboys can't do. Sony sales are in the toilet. And the PS3 sales are worst then this time last year and getting worse by the week.And xbox 360 has the best versions of multiplatforms which makes up 99% of you gaming library.Also 360 has Forza 3, Alan Wake, Splinter Cell.The PS3 seriously has problems in 2009 yes it dose.
