Halo 3 to support True (not upscaled) 1080p at 60fps?

According to a story on Playthree.net the Xbox 360's flagship title Halo 3 will support true (not upscaled) 1080p at 60fps, after Microsoft issued an edict to developers Bungie that it must be the most technically advanced game available on the platform according to.

if this were true, great... but i'm doubting the reliability of the information. There has been no word from any other source about the resolutions of Halo... and to make this story less credible they mentioned "halo 4" which there won't be... the next halo project is Halo Wars... then there is whatever Peter Jackson is working on...

also, peter moore has pointed to 2011 or 2012 as the timeframe for the next xbox... not 2010...

If this came from a site that didn't claim itself to be the "unofficial website" for playstation 3 i'll believe it.. even better would be If this came from the weekly update from bungie... The source is from "A source close to a Bungie insider" which could be true... or completely madeup (although, why they would make this up is beyond me)... I still think halo 3 will be in 720p in order to show details... but if they can get the same detail and still output 1080p... awesome.

BS...Microsoft has aöways stated that 720p is the sweetspot. Only Sony representatives would say something like that. MS has left Bungie with free hands to do what they want with Halo 3, and wouldn't interfere like that.

this site back in September 2006, had rumored the same thing. Based on the speculations early on, I'm gonna go with a 'TRUE' statement, if 'FALSE', I think it will still be upscaled anyhow at 60 FPS.

technically 1080p gaming is possible over component, its only movies that get downscaled for copyright reasons. However, sometimes people's TVs don't accept 1080p through component (although Samsung TVs do)

I would much rather have 720p with more detail and smoother framerate. Why does MS have to play into this 1080p war?? I thought MS said that 1080p wasn't even possible on current generation machines.......This goes for Sony too. If I am not mistaken they said 720p was the sweet spot for games. And also they did state that the upscaler imbeded in every 360 was not publicy told so sony wouldn`t include it themseleves. The elite can produce 1080p. Mark my words, Halo 3 will not be TRUE 1080p, nor will it play at 60fps. This is just hogwash talk from M$ to get the 360 to be seen as with the same quality/processing power as the PS3. The 360 DOES NOT have the capabilities to do both things at once. Just look at Gears of War, for the art style they chose to go with, that game looks incredible. But it’s too buggy at 30fps online, and is only at 720. Also multiplayer modes don’t support very many people. I say Halo will support no more than 24 players online, and at the most 32, but I highly doubt they will with the hardware M$ created.

Meanwhile Sony released a great looking game from day one that supports up to 40 people online from day one. This number of people online will increase, maybe even double in the coming years due to the Cell processor.

I’m very quickly coming to the conclusion that Halo 3 will be a two-disk game. Mark my words!!!!

i had a ps2 but gave it away (although i have a copy of final fantasy 12 that i'm itching to play so i may pick up another one)... never had a dreamcast (wish i did though)

my favorite console (to this day) was the sega saturn. Before that I had an NES and before that an Atari. I never got a ps1 or dreamcast because I went into computer gaming until the xbox came out (and that only lasted a year before I went back to computer gaming) Nowadays the computer industry goes a little too fast for me to keep up with my gaming rig so I went with a 360. It has never broken, in fact I bought a second one for the quieter disk drive (and sold my launch console to a friend for 150 bucks)

I don't own a ps3 because I've bought enough high tech stuff lately (denon 7.1 receiver, samsung 50" dlp) along with furniture for my new apartment... I just can't afford to not only buy a second console, but also buy additional games for another console. As sad as it is that April is a dry month for games, I'm glad I'm not spending a lot of money...

I'd like to call a truce between us (and no, I didn't knock your bubbles down before commenting on your posts) I just think you are overly critical of the xbox360 and don't put any of that back on sony...

i freely admit that yes the launch xbox360's were loud (the new drives are way better) and they did break (although no one that i personally know had a problem)... getting dropped from games is something from the developer not microsoft... 50 dollars a year is not so much especially for the amount of servers they maintain (and its not mandatory)... my 360 does not freeze.. my launch one did a couple times, but the spring update (2006) fixed that... i get 30+ hours out of my (non-ms) rechargable batteries... but that is my experience

and yes, some of the first party games suck (mainly PDZ) but the others i do like (halo, gears, DOA4, N3, PGR3, forza) and some have some real potential (too human, mass effect, blue dragon, lost odyssey) and some don't (shadowrun) but the same can be said for Sony's first party... its just a matter of opinion, so please don't claim that your opinion is fact in terms of quality of games.

it seems to me some people are just reading the headlines and not reading the article. First, it is from playthree not from bungie or xbox.com. I agree that it is shameful for microsoft to mandate that halo 3 be 1080p, but the article has to be taken with a grain of salt. Frankly, it is a rumor, so don't blame microsoft for toying with their fans... that would only be true if they made a press release out of this. There has been no talk from bungie or microsoft as to the final resolution of halo 3.

1- This article is probably wrong.
2- Even if Halo COULD display in 1080p, you probably wouldn't want it to, because most of us care more about better-looking and smoother gameplay in 720p than wasting pwoer on 1080p. I'm glad to see people are finally getting this one!

Sorry dude. I hate to single you out, but back to our earlier discussion about whether it was Sony fanboys or MS that said that 1080p wasn't possible on current(next gen) systems. I did a simple google search and came up with numberous articles of technical exects saying that 1080p wasn't possible (I don't need to paste links, because i'm sure everyone knows how to use google). I understand that this is a bit off topic since it isn't specifically about MS being able to output 1080p, so sorry for that, but it would seem cowardly of me to state something and not back it up. As I understand it though. If we where to get into specifics. MS states that you cannot display 1080p without HDMI. Yup, you know what I'm getting at next. This explains the Elite. What burns me is that now when I play Halo I won't be able to get 1080p because the old 360 doesn't have HDMI.

Not trying to flame man. The problem is that with the original 360, the hardware was never there (This is the system I bought). They released another skew where now, the hardware is there. Sony has done alot wrong ( At least this is what people think) Now more and more we are seeing how all the wrongs are becomming right. That's my oppinion. Don't get me wrong. I love the 360. Personally, I feel it's beating the PS3 all over the place, but I feel that there are more people crapping on the PS3 where I really don't think it's warrented. Buggy console, a year start but not a super strong launch, and not the most powerful console out of the three. Now of course the 360 wont be as successful as the PS2, but neither will the PS3.

Anyways, who knows, maybe this is true. And if it is two disks, i really frankly don't care. Since the game is split into levels, and my 360 is like 2ft away from me, it really doesn't bother me.

seriously doubt that is true. The two consoles, both the PS3 AND the Xbox360 are not capable of pulling off any game with decent visual assests of pulling off TRUE native 1080p support.

The truth is in the numbers. It is just not going to happen. If the games looks like a last gen game maybe, but I will tell you right now, nothing like R6V or Oblivion is possible running at 1080p. NOT GOING TO HAPPEN.

Once again - who cares! I honestly don't understand why graphics are OH SOOOOO MUCH important to some people??? For example, System Shock 2 has faaar more inferior graphics to any current fps on PS3 or X360, but can blow away both RESISTANCE or HALO 3 in terms of gameplay inovation and atmosphere. Not to mention Deus Ex, one of the greatest games of all time.

All we get is more of the same (same game with higher res, with ZERO inovation).
