Nintendo Life writes: "Karate Phants is thankfully a rarity on the WiiWare service: a terribly executed game which uses a license that no one outside of the country of origin is likely to have heard of in a game genre which is ill-selected. Abysmal controls and fatally broken gameplay have been combined in a game which doesn't seem to be marketed at anyone in particular. Maybe its target market is no one; that would probably be for the best. There really isn't anything to recommend about this game whatsoever, it is a complete waste of space".
DGS-Online writes: "A few people will realize when they play Karate Phants that the characters in this childish fighting game are based on a popular German comedian. Otto Waaltes created in the seventies first Ottifant, an elephant with human features, and put him on the album cover. The Ottifanten were in Germany a great success and has many toys, games, T-Shirts and movies of it. Karathe Phants: Gloves of Glory is not the first 'Ottifanten game', but the first to cross the German border."
The WiiWare library has expanded considerably these past few months, with many games being excellent examples of what PALGN would like to see more of in the future. Of course for everything good, there's a heap of absolute rubbish. Once again, Bplus fails to deliver with their latest WiiWare game Bit Boy!!, while German elephants invade the service in one of the worst fighting games seen in years. Still, there's certainly something that will appeal to everyone, whether it's some glorious platforming in NyxQuest: Kindred Spirits or defending a castle in My Life as a Darklord. Wii's World writes: "Karate Phants: Gloves of Glory from Snap Dragon Games has the distinct honor of being the first all-out fighting game on WiiWare. It draws inspiration from a German comic series known as Ottifanten. The characters are all elephants.. albeit elephants with short trunks, six packs and a diverse set of karate skills."
