Thai Cabinet May Close Game Parlours to Halt Swine Flu Spread

At a news conference in Bangkok today, Thailand's prime minister, Abhisit Vejjajiva, said the government may shut down the nation's game parlours to head off a recent spike in swine flu infections. The announcement comes just days after Public Health Minister Witthaya Kaewparadai identified the popular game centers as hotspots for transmission of the disease.

Although public health officials said yesterday closures were unlikely, Abhisit told journalists this morning he will decide Thursday whether to order game parlors and tuition schools to shut down. The government, which has already sought cooperation from movie theater and shopping mall owners, said it is reaching out to proprietors of gaming cafes as well.
