UDN says PS3 Slim to be ready for July

I'm sure we've all heard the rumours of the PS3 Slim being added to the line-up 'some time this year' by an unnamed source. Well now, Taiwanese site UDN reports that Sony has signed Foxconn and Pegatron to start sending units out this this month.

UDN writes "Upstream component makers that the new Sony PS3 console OEM orders formally approved last week, of which Hon Hai Heshuo pie with 50 percent of all...

Why does it look like that? ...

ShinMaster5205d ago

PS2 slim wasn't very pretty either.

The only looks that matter are the ones the machine produces, not itself.

DasBunker5205d ago (Edited 5205d ago )

i really dont understand why didnt they announce it at E3 if it was coming pretty soon..

@ Below

mmmmmhhh i see makes sense.. since i already have a PS3 what i really want right now is BC.. hope the rumours are true and they implement it via firmware update..

Slim PS3 + GT5 + GOWIII + Price Cut = All Hell Brakes Loose

PirateThom5205d ago

They probably have stock of the regular PS3s they need to clear. If they announce a slim, sales of the normal version DIE. People would wait.

Natsu X FairyTail5205d ago

no Shin not really

I'D Take the Slim PS2 over the Bulky one anyday. Its way more Stylish

shocky165205d ago

Should get it out by October or November to boost PS3 sales.

Ju5205d ago

"Sending out in July" doesn't mean on store shelf in July. Sony might build stock for the holiday season, selling of current stock of 80/160GB models and introduce the slim as soon as those are gone (most likely around Oct ?). Usually it takes a while to build stock for holiday sales, which are way bigger then throughout the rest of the year.

Carl14125205d ago

i don't think it is terribly bad looking to be honest

Also i very much doubt it will be out this month. I expect it to be announced at GC, and released september time

Natsu X FairyTail5205d ago

Why would this come out in July out of nowhere without hype behind it?

I think they'll show it at TGS09 and have it release between then and Christmas.

that makes the most sense to me.

iamtehpwn5205d ago

it's easier to use Swap Magic with. ;D

Marcelles255205d ago

the slim 160g is gonna start at 399 with the 80g down to 299 and the LIMITED EDITION 160g is gonna be discontinued

Sev5205d ago

@ PirateThom,

That's why they didn't reveal it at E3. Post-E3 PS3 sales increased, and they would have decreased had they announced the PS3 Slim.

Plus it gave the PSP go time to shine.

But the PS3 Slim was originally supposed to be shown at E3.

Anon19745205d ago

If you new a new PS3 was just around the corner, would you buy a PS3 now or would you wait?

This may be an interesting point this gen if the slim is offered at a discount to the PS3's available now, or if the regular PS3's receive a price cut.

Consider that last year, six months in the 360 was being outsold by the PS3 by over a million units and only their price cut saved them, and so far this year the 360 is only outselling the PS3 by about 300k units worldwide - despite being half the price. If this happens, how will Microsoft respond - or is the rumored new 360 for 2010 already their response in the making.

Stay tuned!

Dread5205d ago

@darkrider

show me the credible link were it says that last year sony was up by 1 million during the first six months..

and now 360 is only up by 3 hundred thousand the first six months.

Disccordia5205d ago

I'm still fairly convinced the PS3 Slim is a myth. Sure, it'll come at some point but right now, I can't see how it's possible to stick everything in something that flat (HDDs for example) AND get adequate heating solutions. My fans work overtime as it is on the current model.

Anyway, to go with previous traditions, wouldn't a slimline model actually be called a PSthree? Or am I imagining that..

siyrobbo5205d ago

i prefer the ps2 slim to the fat ugly bulky version, also the ps1 slim looked a hell of a lot better than the playstation. The ps3 is absolutely huge, cant wait to see what the slim actually looks like, hope they do a whit version, i prefer white consoles

Carl14125205d ago (Edited 5205d ago )

That's not even the whole casing

And yes you are imagining it. PS2 slim was called simply...A PS2

commodore645205d ago (Edited 5205d ago )

Lol

I have to laugh a little at the fanboys who spin the 360 price point to suit their purpose.

Right now, the ps3 is being outsold, quite convincingly, worldwide, in addition to a sizeable install base gap.

Predictably, this is then attributed to the 360 being 'half price'.
What fails to get acknowledged, is that the Pro and Elite models, which sell a fair proportion of 360s sold are also part of the pricing lineup, which match, or nearly match, the ps3 price.
It's not really very intelligent to talk about the 360 prices, without taking into account the price of ALL available skus.

Astonishingly, when the fanboys talk about value, we hear how much CHEAPER the ps3 actually is.
http://n4g.com/News-355641....
How is it possible that the ps3 is actually cheaper and more expensive all at once?
Is this an instance of SDF spin going back on itself?

I just find it weird that the pricing of the 360 is crucially the deciding factor when we are analysing the continued and worsening 3rd place ps3 position.
Yet when we talk about value, it turns out the 360 is so overpriced that it should not be selling at all!

When we take into account the price of the arcade, then sure, the price is contributing to ps3 beating sales.

However, we can't argue that the 360 price is the deciding issue while crying about the inferior value of the 360.
Those two arguents are self-defeating, yet we have heard them countless times.
Truth is....Consumers are savvy.
They vote with their hard earned cash!

But yeah, I acknowledge this is n4g and the ps3 section, whats more.
I really wasn't expecting any different.

What irks me is, people on here call themselves gamers, but seemingly spend inordinate amounts of time posting complex and ambiguous arguments excusing the performance of sales on one console, versus another.

very weird.

bpac1234567895205d ago

It can't if there's one thing Sony knows how to do, its make something look good. This looks like one of those knockoffs you buy over in Japan.

Final_Rpg5205d ago

I reckon this will look better in person to be honest. Those shots of it aren't very appeasing.

You can use these links to get an overview look on NPD, ChartTrack and Media Create numbers. For 2009 NPD numbers just go back on N4G and pick up all the NPD numbers for this year so far. In order to make it simpler (since June NPD numbers haven't been released this year) it's best to just go up to May 31st for 2009. That being said....

For 2009 (up to May 31st):
360: 202k(media create)+1.2M(NPD)+600k(ChartTr ack)= ~2M
ps3: 548K(media Create)+955K(NPD)+300k(ChartTr ack)= ~1.8M (difference of 200k)

For 2008 (Jan1st-June30)
360: 77k(media create)+1.3M(NPD)+300k(ChartTr ack)= ~1.7M
ps3:565K(media create)+1.6M(NPD)+300k(ChartTr ack)= ~2.5M(difference of 800K)

@COMMODORE
That's not even worth getting into detail about really. All I can say is this: "value" and "price" are two TOTALLY different things. So trying to mash them up as being the same thing in order to spin things in your favor...well.....it's nothing but spin. Two TOTALLY DIFFERENT things.
By the way, people on here are gamers AND gaming enthusiasts/hobbyist, and as such it's only natural for them(us) to keep up with industry news (which includes sales), just like how I keep up with industry news from the movie industry being as how I'm something of a movie buff as well.

Now, on topic:
Like others have pointed out, I can totally see why they didn't announce the slim at E3 being as how they wouldn't sell any consoles til the slim came out (which doesn't mean it's coming in July just because it starts shipping---like somebody else pointed out before). Also, I don't think it looks all that ugly. If you take the pics that actually showed the unit from different angles (not just the pic on the box) you'll get a much better view of it. But the thing is, when you look at that, you got to realize that's what it looks like in the middle of production. It's still going to get polished up and trimming and stuff added (like how the unit pics):
http://www.gamingbits.com/i...
don't even show the silver part below the disc slot (see box picture for reference).

Dread said "show me the credible link were it says that last year sony was up by 1 million during the first six months..'

Sure thing.
http://www.microsoft.com/ms...
and
http://www.sony.net/SonyInf...

For the six months of 2008, microsoft reported an increase in the xbox from 18 million to 20 million.

Sony reported 3.17 million.

I think that official reports filed with the exchanges for their shareholders constitute "credible links", don't you? Anyway, my point was that if the 360 could overcome a deficit of a million consoles with a price cut, it's not too hard to imagine a PS3 price cut could bridge that 300k gap that the 360 has them outsold by in 2009 so far.

insomnium5204d ago

"Lol

You're stating the obvious here. I really think the install base isn't that important anymore. Both consoles have big enough to support games.

"Predictably, this is then attributed to the 360 being 'half price'.
What fails to get acknowledged, is that the Pro and Elite models, which sell a fair proportion of 360s sold are also part of the pricing lineup, which match, or nearly match, the ps3 price.

Please prove this "a fair proportion" statement of yours.
Why did the PS3 outsell xbox360 before the desperate price cut last year? Why?

"Astonishingly, when the fanboys talk about value, we hear how much CHEAPER the ps3 actually is.
http://n4g.com/News-355641....

No I believe it's just you trying to be a smartass.

"I just find it weird that the pricing of the 360 is crucially the deciding factor when we are analysing the continued and worsening 3rd place ps3 position.
Yet when we talk about value, it turns out the 360 is so overpriced that it should not be selling at all!"

If you're willing to settle for the bare minimum (arcade) then sure it's a lot cheaper choise. It's still bad value. You're just being a smartass here all over again.

"When we take into account the price of the arcade, then sure, the price is contributing to ps3 beating sales.

However, we can't argue that the 360 price is the deciding issue while crying about the inferior value of the 360.
Those two arguents are self-defeating, yet we have heard them countless times.

How are those two comments self-defeating? You're not very smart are you? If MS wouldn't have dropped the price last autumn (or when ever that was) desperately you wouldn't have anything to gloat about now would you?

"But yeah, I acknowledge this is n4g and the ps3 section, whats more.
I really wasn't expecting any different."

You my good sir are a real original...

"What irks me is, people on here call themselves gamers, but seemingly spend inordinate amounts of time posting complex and ambiguous arguments excusing the performance of sales on one console, versus another.

very weird."

I have values. I'm a gamer. I hate what MS has done this generation. I think it's an embarrasment on a colossal scale for so many reasons. I think it's sickening to see people like you praising them.

agent8645204d ago

I agree with Ju ... sony has to fill the supply pipeline which doesnt happen instantly, there's a 60 day supply of ps3 fat's on the shelves ... the new slims have to go through customs ... you don't launch new product in August.

commodore645204d ago (Edited 5204d ago )

@1.22

Lol... oh dear.
hmmm where to begin?

Dude, I find it a bit sad to see you describe yourself as a gamer, yet proudly proclaim:

"I hate what MS has done this generation. I think it's an embarrasment (sic) on a colossal scale for so many reasons. I think it's sickening to see people like you praising them."

Yeah... so... hmmm.
Sounds *slightly* sony fanboyish to me.
According to you logic, I guess it's ok to be a gamer and hate MS, ignoring the wealth of PC games, xbox games, and 360 games that we have thanks to MS.

I suspect you are angry and bitter that your console is in third place and that's the real reason you hate MS.

If you were a true gamer, you'd welcome the diversity that MS has brought to the table, the competition, and the higher standards.
Apart from the woeful rrod problems, MS has done a terrific job this gen and 31+ million 360 owners would likely echo my sentiments.

Your statements merely show your frustration and personal bias, my good friend.

insomnium5204d ago

MS is run by 15 year old children and you can hear it every time they open their mouths. All they ever do is badmouth the competition (Sony in particular).

I've played consoles since the nes 8-bit era but I've never been playing with a PC. All the other things possible I do on my PC but gaming is not one of them. Never have never will.

What xbox360 games? There has to like 2-3 games worth mentioning that aren't also on PC or PS3. Xbox 360 is a multiplatform console with no identity of it's own whatsoever.

"I suspect you are angry and bitter that your console is in third place and that's the real reason you hate MS."

Why on earth would I be angry or bitter because the PS3 is in third place? I get all the games I need so why? It doesn't matter if the install base is 20 or 30 million. Developers get their moneys worth even if they make exclusive games on both install bases and it doesn't seem like the PS3 wouldn't be recieving any games so what's your point?

"If you were a true gamer, you'd welcome the diversity that MS has brought to the table, the competition, and the higher standards.
Apart from the woeful rrod problems, MS has done a terrific job this gen and 31+ million 360 owners would likely echo my sentiments."

31 million what? Many developers are saying that the PS3 brings in MORE cash for them. How is that possible if Xbox360s install base is larger by this huge amount you claim?

Like I said I have values. I don't want to give my money to a company like MS. They are childish and greedy. Just now they announced that they are going to alter gaming with Natal. I mean come on what????

Just 2 years back they lolled at Sony for not having any games and now this? 2 years ago they were all about HD-DVD and games. When HD-DVD died they wanted to destroy Sony by advertising DDL even though their own HD-DVD addon was just released up here in europe.

"Your statements merely show your frustration and personal bias, my good friend."

I'm biased for sure but I have several reasons for it. Go back 2-3 years and listen/read all the interviews of any MS executive in the games division. That in and of itself is enough for me to be totally turned off on the xbox360. Then read all the lies about failure percentages being "within industry standards".

Mainly I hate MS for being a chameleon. Always changing their opinions and trying to go where the money is. 1080p, HDMI. Now they want to be the best in the business in motion controls too? Give_me _a_break.

The reason I might be frustrated is because of all the stupidity and blindness of the masses buying in in every singe "new thing" MS happens to advertise.

I loved the original xbox but an xbox360 I will not touch again.

Anon19745204d ago (Edited 5204d ago )

Were I not a gamer I simply wouldn't care what Microsoft has done, but it's because of my love of gaming that Microsoft has been a disappointment this gen. The biggest issue I have is their conscious decision to screw over 30% of their gamers at the beginning - myself included - by selling a product that didn't deliver from a reliability standpoint. It was only when slow sales and the specter of looming lawsuits raised itself that Microsoft decided to address the problem...not by fixing it but rather by extended their warranty until hopefully the problem went away. Say what you will about Sony, but at least when they were backed into a corner with the PS2 drive problems they fixed the problem instead of just delaying the problem, or prolonging it by replacing faulty units with refurbed, faulty units.

It's because I'm a gamer that this was a sharp stick to the ribs to gamers, in my opinion. They knew there was a problem but went ahead anyway.

Then there's their tendancy to slam the competition in every breath. It's a joke. Again, Sony made some bold claims originally but what company doesn't tout the benefits of their product? Microsoft, in comparison, took the "school yard" playground route of name calling and mudslinging and it's made them look like a joke. What other publically traded company can you think of that slams their competition every time their execs open their mouths. Could you imagine if Honda execs started slamming Porsche because the Honda Civic sells more? It's an embarrassement to the industry. Not to mention the outright lies at the beginning regarding failure rates that duped many a consumer, myself included, to pick up a product that wasn't sound. The fact that Microsoft delivered a few great games doesn't somehow negate what they've done.

Here's a hint for Commodore as he seems to have some issues defining what a "gamer" is. A gamer doesn't simply bash a console because he likes another console. A true gamer would at least give it a chance and not be afraid to voice his opinion, or ridicule other gamers for expressing their own opinions. A true gamer wouldn't spout such nonsense as "PS3 multiplats are all gimped," or "hundreds of multiplat games are better on the 360" (sound familiar?) without actually playing PS3 games or without the ability to back up those statements.

Your fanatic obsession with slamming Sony, plus your ongoing campaign of lies and half truths on these forums exclude you from discussing what a "true gamer" is.

The one thing you got right was that "consumers are savvy". That's 100% correct, which is why they're buying up the PS3 far faster then they adopted the 360...and you know that's a fact.
