PS2 Emulation Already Up And Running?

Is your PlayStation 3 running firmware greater than 2.10? Chances are it is, but did you know that apparently it's then already capable of running PS2 games then?

I know of a few singstar ps2 titles that play on all ps3's. so i don't see why not

kharma455840d ago

That's not exactly emulating graphics though, it's just reading a sound and video file with some text to go along with it.

Kushan5840d ago

It still has to display those as graphics, though. They're just not very advanced graphics. If what the article is saying is true, chances are it works purely because the graphics involved are very very basic and don't require full emulation of the PS2's GS.

Carl14125840d ago

Hmmm i somehow doubt it. Sure they may add it at a later stage but i doubt it's been there since 2.1

uie4rhig5840d ago

the EE has been emulated since the EU 60GB launch SKU.. the problem with emulation is the GPU, which is much harder to emulate..
btw.. anyone have a link to the patent? i wonder when the patent has been submitted! if anyone has the link please post here :)

Ju5840d ago

^^ This article still refers to the EE, not the GS. Nothing has changed. If this article is accurate, Sony just filed a patent for an already existing EE emulation. Nothing more.

With PS2 emulators reaching maturity on PC's that are less powerful than the PS3, it's going to be a real embarrassment for Sony if a bunch of hackers can put together a better emulator than they can for their own platform.

GameGambits5840d ago

Idk if I can hold out until Tokyo Game Show for more confirmation on Sony's plans about this PS2 backwards compatability on all PS3s or not. August I plan to get a PS2 used with a ton of games I missed out on from PS2 that I really want to play, but if it was in September that Sony were to announce this all PS3 to PS2 compatability I could wait the extra month to save the cash. :)

uie4rhig5840d ago

nah.. already read that, i'm looking for the actual patent on the patents websites ( http://usasearch.gov) .. i keep searching but can't find anything, where did they get those picture from?

Im glad I bought a 60gb. The only PS2 game in my collection that doesnt play well is FFXII. All the others run really well with HD scaling, aliasing & smoothing :)

i have a 40Gb one (which i upgraded to 250Gb)... i can see PS2 save option in Game Save folder. i don't know if it can play PS2 games though.. don't have any PS2 games with me.

Mc Fadge5840d ago

You can create PS2 memory cards on any PS3 system, but they are useless on the ones without BC (at the moment)

table5840d ago

Downloadable games is cool but I want to be able to play hard copies at some point. Maybe some of the tech boffins could tell me if this is possible?

Kushan5840d ago

There's absolutely no reason why not. If the PS3 can emulate the required PS2 hardware to just run the games, there's no reason why it couldn't load them from a DVD as opposed to a hard drive. In fact, this option would actually require less "work" on Sony's part (Not that any kind of ISO loading is difficult).

IdleLeeSiuLung5840d ago

True, unless Sony wants to corner the market and sell DLC games only. Same price point, no manufacturing, no retailer cut and more advertisement from visiting PSN Store.

This is probably unlikely though (as Sony can keep the PS2 console alive longer), but I hope there would be an outrage if it were to happen.

Kushan5839d ago

I think if Sony were ever going to do that, they'd have locked out PS1 games as well.

LightofDarkness5840d ago

Well. I've got a 20GB launch PS3, emulation means nowt to me. Thanks to a built-in emotion engine, I can also run PS2 back-ups from an external HDD thanks to Swap-Magic and USB Advance. Shine on, launch PS3.

xino5840d ago

how do they know that the newer ps3 models can play PS2 games eh?
Have they tested it?

Project: Horned Owl Review

From the mid-1980s to the early part of the 2000s, light gun rail shooters were a staple in both arcade and home system gaming. Arguably, the genre started to really hit its stride in the mid-1990s. While games like Time Crisis, Virtual Cop, and House of the Dead, among others, dominated both the home system and arcade space, some one relegated to only home game systems. Today, we’ll be talking about a little-known cult game published by Sony called Project: Horned Owl. This game was developed by Alfa Systems, and all in all, this is a fun game.

The director of the original Silent Hill: “I look forward to seeing bold interpretations.”

Keiichiro Toyama—the creator and original director of the 1999 Silent Hill—shared his personal thoughts on the recently announced remake by Konami, reflecting on what the project means to him after more than two decades:
“I felt something similar when the game was adapted into a movie. It deeply moved me to see the names of the characters and locations I had created come to life visually, even though I wasn’t directly involved. That wouldn’t have been possible without the continued support of the fans and the dedication of the developers who’ve kept the series alive.
I’m really looking forward to seeing how the remake evolves this time. With the advanced technology we now have, I’m sure I’ll be surprised by how the game is reimagined. Since the original was built for the first PlayStation, there will naturally be challenges—like the camera and controls—but I’m eager to see bold and creative solutions to those elements.”

Haha Not only is bold and creatively not what the industry wants, it’s not what most people want.

They want to get scammed and pay twice for a thing they already own.

jznrpg4d ago

I’m sure many would want bold and creative done well, but that’s easier said than done. I like variety so give me a little bit of everything, done well of course.

Nightcrawler895d ago

Hope they use his vision in the game

Inverno5d ago

Was the SH2 remake even bold? Or was it more or less just a 1 to 1 over the shoulder remake?

Scissorman5d ago

it was not. it greatly expanded the areas and puzzles to the point where it felt like an entirely new game. the enemies and boss fights were given a MASSIVE upgrade. the abstract daddy fight in particular was incredible. and the team added two new endings.

Pedrof5d ago

I wouldn't hold my breath on "bold".

The score for the first Plants Vs Zombies is such great, iconic music that it has a timeless quality. Not quite the level of Minecraft, but wonderful in its own right.
