PS3 Firmware 3.0 - Grief reporting, reputation system, background patches, multiple audio outputs, more

VG247: VG247 has learnt that PS3 Firmware 3.0, "a completely new system" for the console, is to release pre-Christmas with a raft of major feature updates.

The software upgrade has been described to us as "a huge overhaul", and was compared to NXE "in some respects".

I have been waiting for this since day 1. My TV is connected via HDMI, but my surround sound does not have HDMI pass-through and is only connected through the optical cable. This means I need to turn on my entire home theater to play games, which is awesome and a must have, but it just seems like an awful waste at 2am when I need to keep the volume down to not wake up the Mrs.

right now you can only have one or the other running for your sound at a time. If I want to play sound just from my TV I have to manually switch the settings to HDMI, vice versa if I want 5.1 through my stereo I need to manually switch it to OPTICAL.

Right now, you can select to have the PS3 output sound on either the HDMI or the S/Pdif TOSLink plug, but not both.

I guess FW 3.0 will allow both to work simultaneously...

I hope they really do fix this. It's a small thing but for people who do switch their sound outputs a lot its a much needed feature. It sucks when you start a game and find out you have the audio set to the wrong output then have to exit the game just to switch it.

I was worried about this very thing when I got my new LCD, but thankfully, my Bravia has an optical out, so I was able to run the HDMI to my Bravia, and then run the optical from the Bravia to my stereo.

I have an older receiver and it only had an optical input, not an HDMI input.

Did you even read what I wrote? Why do you need audio output on BOTH at the SAME TIME? I don't have HDMI on my receiver eother, there's something called an optical out port which the PS3 does have. So again I ask, why do you need a signal coming out of both ports at the same time?

Don't hold your breath for a unified custom soundtrack feature. Sony implemented a firmware update that allows developers to patch in a custom soundtrack feature, and that is as good as it is going to get. Microsoft has a patent on the unified implementation of it.

I'm a massive ps3 supporter, but you can't deny sony does things in their own way... I mean a photo gallery? Was that really time well spent? Poor Management, Direction and Communication is the problem. From my own experiences...asians don't communicate that well. A Very introverted people. Sony also isn't as organized into ONE singular corporate umbrella and the idea that people are going to use the "photo gallery" on a GAMES MACHINE is ridiculous. Maybe if the machine was 199$, then you'd get alot more people using it for a variety of features, but only the Tech Savy and Hardcore gamers have a PS3 right now. Features regarding Gaming and money generating services (vizone, video store... (cough) ummm MUSIC STORE!) should be of the upmost priority.

The PLAYSTATION3 cannot compete with your standard Desktop PC it just isn't close to that level and the even lesser a MAC's level. The PS3 needs to build upon its primary feature set... "Gaming". Few additions like storing photos, music, movies and playing blurays is good enough for now!

Just look at the PSP and all the worthless features it would get updated with. For a company that claims "We hear what the consumer wants." They make pretty brash decisions and Middle finger the core customers on a regular basis. UMMMM.. PSP TROPHIES ANYONE? PSN Friend's List on a PSP?

If I was running firmware development I would make it MY JOB to include (atleast 1 community feature) into every update (unless its a minor bug fixing update).

You forgot it existed because you didn't use it. It's not a very useful feature and I will barely use it when PSN gets it I can guarantee you. None of my friends with 360's use it either. The one useful thing I'd like that that live has is sending recorded voice messages.

this news/rumor is total bull$hit as usual. they don't even have a clue about firmware 3.0, even sony don't about firmware 2.9.

ps3 owners will start to dream about an epic firmware that will cure cancer but they'll get an insignificant firmware adding compatibility with some obscure software (actually a security hole patch against hackers) and that's all, as usual. so they will come whinning all over on the official Playstation blog site.

They need a system to purge all old ps3's from your account. I just had to delete my main psn id because sony is stupid and only allows you to have 1 console asigned to your id for video content. So i call them up and they are useless and tell me i need to deactivate myself ( i can't i dropped that ps3 and it broke) when i tell him that he says well i need you to fax me blah blah blah when i say why he says so we know that you are not trying to steal content. When i ask him how i could steal content that i need to purchase to download he replys that i could have it on multiple ps3's. I still don't think that makes any sense i should be able to play it on every ps3 on earth as long as i log on if it was a dvd i could.

So bye bye trophies my game saves my friends list i now have to start all over. I almost want to go xbox exclusive now since i really don't feel like starting all over.
