10 Post-2009 MMOs hopeful of dethroning the tyrant

Jim hargreaves writes: "We got our fair share of MMOs to oggle at this year at E3, with a few missing in action, but the bulk of this bellow were there. The list compiles of ten hopeful MMOs that are all expected to launch some time next year, and it isn't just PC based, there are a few PS3 and Xbox 360 MMOs thrown in there too. Enjoy!"

Good list of MMOs to be aware of. I don't think that one of them will dethrone the tyrant but each one of them will take a bite of the community that's for sure.
I think also Aion will take a juicy bite. The game looks fantastic without need of hardware hog. And plays pretty nice too.

Core mmo players don't need wow to be dethroned. WoW is played by people who never played mmos and kids. Mainstream bullcrap like Hannah Monatana. This applies to everything, from music to movies to games. As a gamer i care less about (ZOMG 11mil subs!!!) if the game is bad, and you have to wait 20 min to enter your server (Lol with all that money Blizz cannot get good servers, Square-Enix have servers that are cross platform with PS2 X360 and PC, and has NO LAG on dail up, Yes i played FFXI on Dial up) I only care that the MMO i play is good and has a healthy community enough for me to be enjoyable.

As someone who played MMOs since UO. WoW is just a rip off from everquest which was then dumped down in difficult and everything to make it casual and mainstream. Putting very lame itemization to add addiction to game so idiots keep playing.

You left the best MMORPG Developer game from list. Automatic Fai. The Developer is NCSoft and the game is Soul and Blade

I just pre ordered Aion Collector's Edition ^^. I hope its good not a waste of money like AoC and WoW. Atm Preparing for GvGing in Guild Wars (GvG Guild Leader D:)

About FFXIV

"However, many thought from the trailer that it would simply be your average single-player FF" -WRONG. Many idiots that don't know a about final fantasy and square enix or mmos thought it was offline. The trailer starts with GALKA, race from FFXI, followed by HUME, another race from FFXI and then Elvaan which is too another race of ffxi. The atmosphere and music are FFXIish too

People who followed Square -Enix knew an MMO from SE was coming. The team behind Final Fantasy XI *GASP!! ONLINE FINAL FANTASY!!!* has been working on new MMO for 4 years. When asked about if Final Fantasy theme they always said "We cannot answer that yet"

People over look final fantasy xi due to its old nowdays, but comunity is still going strong and growing, also comunity is very mature. The grow from FFXI came from making it more accessable to people with Wings Of The Goddess. It was really hard to start playing it. Treasures of Aht Urgat fixed it and SE even introduced level syncing and quests to easy leveling and playing.

The stories in FFXI is worthy of Final Fantasy Title, espically CoP Story. The story in FFXI is better then some other offline final fantasy(s) story and definitly way better story compared to now days RPGs and 100% BEST story in an MMO. The characters are unique and have character. Shanotto, which is a character in FFXI, which she keeps bossing you around until you rise in ranks (Windurst Missions) says Hello as a very good character, unlike games nowdays who have horrible generic characters. The content of FFXI is too much you can say its endless, from Sky Gods to Dynamis to Sea and Besieged. Its varied and fun. Community is probably the best I saw on an MMO, granted you will meet arseholes and kids but the ratio is small. Example I find WoW community horrible and even Guild Wars community (probably due to no monthly fee). The Job system is great and able to swtich jobs on same character, nothing can be that. Parties are fun and since they introduced level sync, finding a group takes like 5 min only.

Alot of people are saying that SE has no expierence with MMOs when they have more then Blizzard and that no final fantasy title should be mmo when ffxi excists already. ffxi best MMO when it was launched. Sure FFXI had some flaws, which they will probably fix in FFXIV.

I agree with everything you've pretty much written and to an extent the fact as to why WoW is so popular, it seems to range from kids range at least around 7 or so to about the end of high school it seems. A least in my neck of the woods. Probably just the same as how some people will say Jonas brothers are the best band despite better bands coming out well before them, to which they probably say it's the first they heard of, but anyway that's a different story.

Also I agree, Final Fantasy XI is pretty old now but still good, probably overlooked because of the difficulty just as well as the battle system. Compared to WoW some people would pick WoW over Final Fantasy XI, yet I would pick Final Fantasy XI just because it seems relaxing and can get rather heated in a minute if you want it to (and sometimes if you don't want it to)

Lastly, I do hope that they have some of the core things that made Final Fantasy XI a pretty interesting MMO, for the sake of leveling and starting I sure hope their will be a level sync from the get-go!

Looks like a great list, DCUO is top priority for me also. FFIX won't be bad either by the looks of things, however I think next year will all be about F2P MMOs.

Do you not see this happening during development? Like, why are we apologizing after the fact instead of stopping it during development?

Stopac3d ago

Criticism and reflection occur after the fact. The apology acknowledges the past criticisms with the new expansion and they're keeping transparency with players about it. Now that they've acknowledged it - it will be interesting to see what kind of cycle we'll get with a new expansion and I wonder if they're planning something special with beast master since they didn't mention it in the last live letter.

It's all good, as long as the price of the product decreases.

Stopac3d ago

The base game and expansion go on sale all the time and doesn't stay full price for very long since a new expansion is on the horizon.

If you're stating they should reduce the price of new expansions or the sub fee, no, that's not gonna happen lmao people aren't even complaining about that. They are criticizing the same old pattern of content that releases and how it is devolving into mediocracy.

"They are criticizing the same old pattern of content that releases and how it is devolving into mediocracy."

The product should be cheaper then.

I was unhappy with DT and have spent far less time in it than any other expansion but it's things like this that makes me respect Yoshi P. It's rare for such a high profile developer to be so candid in his assessment on a live game.

Stopac3d ago

Same, i've found my self resubbing every two patches instead of keeping it up. Don't own a home in the game so there's no point in keeping a constant sub going. The post story is getting interesting though.
