How Final Fantasy XIV Can Surpass Final Fantasy XI

Koku Gamer writes: "One of the bigger announcements at this years E3 was Sony's reveal that not only was SquareEnix working on Final Fantasy XIII but that they were also hard at work on Final Fantasy XIV . This came as quite a shock to the gaming populace as for quite some time Square was insistent that Project Rapture would not be a game in the Final Fantasy universe. Yet here we are with Final Fantasy XIV Online. Being a veteran of Final Fantasy XI since the US launch of the game this excited me quite a bit and I began to think what I would like to see and more importantly what XIV needs to surpass XI. What follows is just such a list."

I'm still not sold on 14, never played XI, was it any good?

Reibooi5858d ago

FFXI is in my opinion one of the best MMO's ever made. The main problem by today's standards is the amount of time it takes to get into the game and get anything done. Stuff like WoW does not even begin to compare in all honesty to how much of a time sink FFXI is. The game is incredibly hardcore and to a extent that's what the fanbase loves about the game.

Square did say after they announced the game in there E3 conference that FFXIV was not gonna be as hardcore and as much of a time sink as FFXI was but it was not gonna be as easy and solo based as WoW is either so it will nice to see how they make the game play. Not to mention the game is easily going to be the most graphically impressive MMO out there when it comes out. Alot of people may play it just because of that fact alone.

Ziriux5858d ago

You really thought so? I mean it was a generic MMO with not a whole lot of depth, but than again I gave up after many hours of play. I also owned it on the Xbox 360, so maybe I didn't have the same feeling towards it as you did. It was my first FF game I've played.

Reibooi5858d ago

That's what I meant by time sink. The games depth is not shown out of the gate because of the way Square set it up. You need to play for a few days to unlock you sub job which allows for the majority of the depth and then even longer to unlock the advanced jobs such as Samurai, Ranger, Summoner, Dark Knight and what have you. Becuase of this players who only played the game for a few hours or even a week or 2 would say the game was nothing but your average generic MMO but thats because the mass amount of content the game had to offer is for the high end players

Truth be told if you were not there from the start you are unlikely to reach that content unless you have a friend to hold your hand and power level you. Thats just the kind of game Final Fantasy XI is. These are the key issues that need to be fixed for FFXIV.

evrfighter5858d ago (Edited 5858d ago )

There's gotta be a crap ton less time sinks in 14 than 11 if it wants to go farther. The only reason I still log in to 11 once a week is to run nyzul isle with my linkshell.

With star wars the old republic, the agency, global agenda, huxley, and champions online coming out...

They better get their time sink issues under control because I know I won't be missing out on anything if I decide to skip it. What I mean by this is...18 hour Pandemonium Warden battle, Absolute Virtue, and relic weapons that take 1.5-2 years if you do it legit.

FamilyGuy5858d ago

Im excited about it, I've already got my future clan members from my friends list who are all going to buy it and play with me. It's like a year away though so anything could happen but as of right now im interested.

Reshun5858d ago

Reibooi nailed it. Really needed a lot of time to play. I'd say the minimum time requirement for me was about 3 and half hour back then for mid-high levels. 1 hour to find/set up a party then camp it out with the crew. 2 hours of grinding levels may seem enough but you would likely be treated with "WTF" in the group.

GameGambits5858d ago

I played FFXI for 6 years. This game is so deep, difficult, and rewarding which is why I spent that many years of my life in it.

The graphics were great, the classes are all from the FF series so you'll find fun in what speaks to you, the music is of the best FF caliber, and above all each and every expansion was a stand alone FF game with a full story. The story missions were long, hard, and made you the hero of the story. Without the story missions it wouldn't be Final Fantasy.

FFXI was not for everyone and the main reason was it's a huge time sync like others stated. Leveling took a long time, finding groups to level with could be time consuming, getting to areas to fight could already be camped, and it wasn't just a matter of level 1 job, but most of the time you had to have 3-4 leveled to be effective at your main job in all situations. When you get to the end game portion it gets even more difficult as you will spend hours upon hours doing tedious things just for "internet glitter" AKA better gear.

It lacked REAL PvP and class balance has slipped drastically over the years. To add limitations from the PS2 hardware made it very hard to keep adding new equipment that looks unique or more areas, etc. It's now at its final stretch due to hardware limitations if you ask me.

XIV will NOT be a game for everyone. MMORPGs ARENT for everyone. The casual MMO is WoW, and if you are a real MMORPG fan then you know that WoW is very bland compared to the hard core MMOs out there.

If this game isn't on your radar it will at least be worth your time to try if the reviews hold up to your standards of what is a "good" game or not. As for me it could be 7 at the least and I'd still day 1 buy it. I loved XI and I know I'll love XIV.

Meh... The Final Fantasy games don't interest me, and neither do MMOs. Hmm... does adding two DO NOT WANTs result in a DO NOT WANT that's twice as strong, or do the two nullify each other, resulting in a DO WANT? This requires further investigation...

Ziriux5858d ago

What lol? I'm so confused, you got me twisted like a pretzel.

Ziriux5858d ago (Edited 5858d ago )

Great job with the article. I do agree on almost all things. Final Fantasy XI while a great game in the FF universe it definitely fell short out of most games in the series.

I think the lack of the story and not being a SP game in anyway just threw me of a bit. I don't think i'll be going with XIV, just because I'm not a fan of MMO's.

Reibooi5858d ago

When the game was first released it seemed to lack a story line and wasn't really all that interesting but when Chains of Promathia was released that all changed. Square introduced full blown cinematic cut scenes and very endearing characters like Prishe into the game that players to this day remember long after the story line ended. Even after CoP the newer expansion packs brought good stories like ToAU talking about the origins of Odin and Alexander and the Wings of the Goddess talking about the past and the giant crystal war that ravanged the world.

The game certainly has a rich story line history that wasent there from the beginning.

DeadlyDevil5858d ago

I lost 1.5 years of my life to FFXI dont tell me XIV will be better cuz i will end you! :P

No honestly, i dont MMO.

Reibooi5858d ago

Sounds like you do if you spent a year and a half playing one if you ask me.

The Gamer Guy 3455858d ago (Edited 5858d ago )

I have never liked any of the Final Fantasy's online. IMHO, it doesn't work as a MMORPG.

Ziriux5858d ago

Thank you, I thought I was the only one. I can't wait to try that Huxley FPS MMO, but just as with FF when I was skeptical about being a MMO I have the same feeling when it comes to a FPS games being a MMO. Can servers really handle all that intense fraggin action?

It’s really old now. All great MMOs decline.

PRIMORDUS1d 10h ago

Also who wants to keep paying a monthly fee every month, there are other options like Guild Wars 2 😁with no monthly fee and while not that many people overall compared to FF XIV, it did increase to about 21 mil now.

Sephiroushin1d ago (Edited 1d ago )

I prefer to pay since i do not like guild wars and it keep kids away, but FF14 decreased on quality since they started to make it "more accessible", tried throne and liberty and while it was okay it has so many issues, same for dune awakening... Its time to start making a new FF MMO

Time for the Final Fantasy 17 MMO

kaewcha7341d 11h ago

Looks like Square Enix is self-aware but still stuck in place, they see the player drop and apologize for the bugs, but nothing really changes. Shame, FFXIV used to be the gold standard

Servbot411d 9h ago

My entire free company has stopped playing. The writing has consistently gotten worse and the content is sparse and lacking; unless you are a hardcore player there's very little for you to do. They are over-catering to the people who will grind three+ times a week on a single fight for multiple months when the playerbase by large doesn't want that sort of content. Square needs to dedicate more resources to the game instead of wasting them on mobile and other live service slop.

Miraak82 1d 3h ago

The biggest factor for me is the way they butchered job design over the years , the casualization and over simplification really hurt a good chunk of enjoyment I used to have . Jobs lost any form of complexity and just became " press glowing button" DDR style for fighting where the gameplay loop is a about the 2 minute burst window . They removed most DoTS, timer mechanics , cast times, pets, RNG ect and all around homogenized everything . When you try and can cater to everyone ... you cater to no one .

Do you not see this happening during development? Like, why are we apologizing after the fact instead of stopping it during development?

Stopac5d ago

Criticism and reflection occur after the fact. The apology acknowledges the past criticisms with the new expansion and they're keeping transparency with players about it. Now that they've acknowledged it - it will be interesting to see what kind of cycle we'll get with a new expansion and I wonder if they're planning something special with beast master since they didn't mention it in the last live letter.

anast5d ago

It's all good, as long as the price of the product decreases.

Stopac5d ago

The base game and expansion go on sale all the time and doesn't stay full price for very long since a new expansion is on the horizon.

If you're stating they should reduce the price of new expansions or the sub fee, no, that's not gonna happen lmao people aren't even complaining about that. They are criticizing the same old pattern of content that releases and how it is devolving into mediocracy.

anast5d ago

"They are criticizing the same old pattern of content that releases and how it is devolving into mediocracy."

The product should be cheaper then.

PapaBop5d ago

I was unhappy with DT and have spent far less time in it than any other expansion but it's things like this that makes me respect Yoshi P. It's rare for such a high profile developer to be so candid in his assessment on a live game.

Stopac5d ago

Same, i've found my self resubbing every two patches instead of keeping it up. Don't own a home in the game so there's no point in keeping a constant sub going. The post story is getting interesting though.
