Dean Vs. Level Up's N'Gai Croal: Round I (Subject: Xbox 360 Elite)

N'Gai Croal, the talented game/tech writer (general editor) for Newsweek and author of the Level Up game blog, challenged Dean Takahashi to a little debate that N'Gai calls "Vs. Mode." Foolish or not, Dean Takahashi agreed to trade emails with him. They decided to trade emails on the subject of the Xbox 360 Elite and the PlayStation Portable's price cut. Here is the text of their first discussion. It starts with N'Gai's missive and Dean's return fire. This is sort of like the Siskel and Ebert thing...

a new model every year? I can see how that would make some money for Microsoft. You always have the oneupsman, gotta get the new model type people, but damn. That article hit pretty hard on both ends.

The price of the Elite will come down. Exactly how much depends on both the cost savings achieved by the shift to 65 nanometer chips, and on the size of the PS3 price cut that everybody knows is coming.

Now is not a good time to buy either a 360 Elite or a PS3. Summer is traditionally a slow period anyway. I believe MS is really setting the Elite up for the next big holiday shopping period. Watch out for the the IPTV functionality, more downloadable video content, new promotional bundles and that price cut. When all these things hit, the Elite will be very hard to resist. But for now, I suspect MS is content to put the Elite out just to let people know that it exists.

Bottom line: good things come to those who wait.

Should have not come in here seing who posted this story, the good thing is Sonyfanboys dont have to worry about it!; even if its true or something MS would actually do. Is there time to design a new console every year?; is it practical when considering the speed in which the technoligy is changing?.lol Flame on flame on.

New colours perhaps, lol.

shotty4269d ago

The annual thing is fine as long as they dont make too drastic a change...maybe add a new colour and bump up the disc capacity and thats fine....right?

SmokeyMcBear4269d ago

nope can't bump up the disc capacity, move to hd-dvd. Well I mean they could do it if they want to have an hd-dvd player, but it won't be used for games. The core model is restricted and all games will have to be programmed for that model. 360 is stuck with DVD for its lifespan, so you're gonna have to wait for the 720 to get games onto a media with larger capacity.

BIGBAER4269d ago

I disagree. Microsoft is creative and resourceful; don't be suprised if the unthinkable happens: MS offers a future 360 with a high capacity high-definition dvd player AND a means for everyone else (360 owners) to upgrade without breaking the bank.

Microsoft has shown more foresight AND good business sense than Sony this round. The XNA Toolkit, Live VIDEO MARKETPLACE, IPTV, PC/LIVE integration and so on... If MS has proven anything it's that they are prepared for various contingencies.

Sony underestimated MS and is now paying for it. MS has built momentum for its 360 while Sony is scrambling to play catch-up.

nix4269d ago

unless they come out with a new console with a built-in HD drive (HD-DVD or Blu-ray). you can talk about everything else thats been developed but the DVD format could very well turn out to be 360's achilles' heel as more and more data is needed to run the next-gen games. i know downloading is an option but not all the countries has high-speed connection.

SmokeyMcBear4269d ago

look even if they make a 36o with a built in hd dvd player and all the newest gizmos and gadgets. The bottom line is the core is still being offered, and the core is still in the mass population. The Developers cannot make a game that the core users cannot play. Its pretty simple. They always have to develop for the lowes tcommon denominator. Unless microsoft discontinues all skus that have a DVD drive, and offer some sort of program to upgrade to the newest sku, then all games will have to used with the DVD disc. They will probably get to the xbox 720 before all of this, probably in the next 2 years.
