GamePro: The Best and Worst of E3

Everyone's had their big E3 Keynotes and the gaming world is still picking up the pieces from Microsoft's Natal Project, Nintendo's Wii Motion Plus lineup and Sony's Press Keynote. But the real question is: Who won the overall show? GamePro's sitting down and ranking the E3 Keynotes one by one, giving props to the good hardware and titles that were announced, lamenting the bad moments of each show and seeing what E3 predictions didn't come true.

From what I saw, MS showed more games, all of which actually shown and not just in montages -as with Sony's- they showed more features for Xbox live, with facebook, twitter, last.fm, instantly 1080p digital movies, and not to mention their new motion mechanic Natal.
Though it's still in early development theres no way to tell which controller will be better in the long run.

Sony had better looking games, but i expected all of them. there were no surprises. (Uncharted demo... i am a bit jealous)

However, MS surprised with Nadal, and several exclusive that no one expected.

I am also a halo fan, so i am very happy about two halo announcements. It is awesome that when ODST comes out we will be able to play the Halo Reach beta.

also, they finally got kojima to make games for the 360. Although not exclusive this is great news for 360 owners.

My score would be very similar to game pro. Sony B+, MS A- and Nintendo C-

(this grade does not include the portables because MS does not have any. If i were to inlclude the portables, i would increase Sony's grade, because the games for the psp look awesome. But the PSP go did not convince me)

Really, it was the professionalism shown in the Natal demonstration that wowed people. It was extremely slick. And there was a live demo of Natal, contrary to popular belief. That girl played Ricochet on it.

SONY wowed me 5 1/2 times in thiers.

1# Uncharted 2 footage that blew me away.
2# Final fantasy 14?!?!?!
3# God of war 3 footage that made my jaw drop.
4# GT5 looking that good while featuring multiple driving genres.

1/2 Assassins creed 2 footage, doesn't count in my book because it's a multiplat.

Project "Natal" will probably work to some extent but now how they show it in the trailer. I can't believe some people actually think that it's gonna be like in the trailer shown.

A) Yes Sony annouced a Pink PSP for girls, and every press confrence had a part for girls games, Ubisoft's pets and Imagine, Nintendo had a bunch of crap for DS, Microsoft had the entire NADAL thing which is geared exclusively to girls apparently, close your eyes and imagine seeing your buddies playing nadal at home. They aren't going to replace regular controls for hardcore gaming, nor would you want them to. That would just be fn boring. Motion tech is about selling casual games, wake up!

Not being impressed by NATAL or Sonys Motion Tech, I really think this was MS's weakest showing. Only a couple of their games are actually coming out this year, and none of them were GOTY caliber like UNCHARTED 2. Halo ODST, get real, your gonna have to do more than that than impress me. What is that now, like 6 halo games, MS is just cashing in. The Halo universe has nowhere to go anymore.

And what did Sony announce exactly? 1/2 of their games had goty potential. God of War, The Last Gaurdian, Uncharted 2, Agent, FF14, GT5. Their future is obviously brighter. Fat Princess looks like it will beat any game XBL has to offer.

Sony had so much to announce a lot fell through the cracks. White Knight Chronicles, Ratchet and CLank, Demon Souls, David Jaffe's new project, FF Versus, and Quantuum Theory.

You can't base everything on percentages. Besides the fact that Facebook and Twitter are used as negatives are subjective. I'll bet there are many people who would like to use those features on their 360.
And while the ps3 motion controller is also subjective, it was probably given more of a negative because they basically said "mii too" as their design of a motion controller is basically a wiimote with a camera.

I will do my best to help you understand, you can take whatever works best for you.

1.)Have you ever seen the final ign scores for a game, and then in parenthesis is says "not an average" or have you heard the expression, "the whole is greater than the sum of its parts".

2.)Ratios. Have you ever taken a test where different sections had different values. Perhaps the negative points from Microsoft did not weigh has heavy as the negative for Sony. Just as the positives for Microsoft might have weighed more than those for Sony. Perhaps Microsoft's portfolio was more diversified, and Gamepro feels it yielded better results.

See kids......you can bring school into the real world. With that said..I could be waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay off, and perhaps they are just bias.

It funny, I always thought E3 was about the games. We knew going into this that MS didn't have a strong lineup, so its no surprise that they made it about features. If I want to facebook like a 16 year old girl, or twitter, I get on my PC.

Lets look at the titles. Sony showed like 1/2 a dozen game of the year contenders. God of War 3, Heavy Rain Uncharted 2, Agent, The Last Gaurdian, GT5, and FF14. On top of that they have Quantum Theory, Ratchet and Clank, White Knight Chronicles, and MAG.

MS can't compeat w/ those titles. Their strongest game is ODST, which was pretty standard and disappointing. It just looked like a typical Halo Campaign to me, but w/ a 60$ price tag. Alan Wake was also underwhelming, the gameplay mechanics weren't as great as we were lead to believe. It looks like Silent Hill w/ a flashlight. Forza 3's biggest feature was a movie editor!? I laughed my ass off. That epic XBL title looked boring, Fat Princess will mop the floor w/ it. Splinter Cell conviction looks way too easy, like the way you can mark like 4 targets and pop out and kill everyone automatically.

Can't wait til TGS, when we get to spy FFVersus and David Jaffe's new project.

Most games demoing at E3 --> aren't ready to be released anyhow. E3 is a showcase for --> upcoming game releases and future console features...

The presentation at E3 is what made it look absolutely horrible. After watching the trailer, it's coming down to the price with me. I like where they're going with it. I might consider it if it's no more then 1200 MS points.

After looking at both lists, they are missing quite a few games from the Sony side. They forgot MAG, Modnation racers (which looks amazing), GT5, FFXIV, Agent, and even the Lost Planet 2 announcement. If they added those games, it would of put them at 14. They showed gameplay or how it'll look at least from 4 of those games and demo'd 2. And you can't forget that they just shoved two huge PSP games and new hardware as one announcement. Soul Calibur, resident evil, and fat princess(smaller game). Everyone has been begging for a Resident Evil PSP game and it's finally coming. I agree with everything else.

Valve f'cked up. Either the sequel will have little content like the first game, or they will have alot of content which means they held back content from the first game to have in the second. Firstly, it seems that Valve is not going to bring anything new to the table, and secondly, if they actually do have some new features with this sequel, I assume that they still won't be worth an additional 60 bucks. Valve should have added free DLC to accomodate the fact that L4D, while fun, is a very short game and has very few maps.

Also, wouldn't it be better if there were more than 4 player co-op? Add more people.

Add a new, long campaign.

Add many, many more maps.

Add more weapons.

Improve the graphics engine.

The only way that L4D2 will be worth its price is if it ends up being a much larger, much more improved, and more innovative game. Other than that, it's going to be a pinnacle of Valve's betrayal to its fans.

the milo thing was creepy. besides that you cant count multiplaform to reward one system. because of that xbox was less impresive than nintendo. splinter cell looks good but everything else is just a spin off or a remake they should try harder. no new ip's what was that about.

I agree that this segment was lengthy, but I was pretty entertained (for awhile, at least) by the two guys showing it off. Yeah, it was a little rough and seemed unrehearsed, but the guys were pretty charming. They came off like a couple of guys at show and tell. Perhaps E3 isn't the most appropriate venue for show and tell, but showing it in real time demonstrated how it could really be utilized in the future.

Everything was in a "video" with "actors" no live demo.

Reasons why I do not trust this:
-The kids hands where not picked up when the skateboard was scanned. You guys don't see anything wrong with this? The device was flawless at completing the image with the hands in the way.
-I didn't really notice the kid lean (with his feet or anything) side to side when the in-game character was moving side to side in the skating game.

Don't get me wrong, I would love it if this was all done on stage LIVE but it wasn't.

natal definitely does seem fishy. I realize it's not complete yet but i really don't see how much fun or accurate playing a game like gears or alan wake or anything thats deemed "hardcore" will be. It looks like it'll be perfect for mini games though. Also, with all this tech thats built into it i can't imagine this thing being cheap. Were any potential prices announced or any speculation on it?

I gotta comment on the racing and skateboarding, it looks so ridiculous. Jumping around and waving your arms. No thanks.

Final Fantasy XIII - Disagree. Its way too sci fi for final fantasy, BUT combat system in game looks good. The FF Fan in me will buy it. I enjoyed Xenogears/Xenosaga even though its Sci Fi (I prefer Mediveal tbh)

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves - This wowed me, so much improvement I wish my inFAMOUS copy had beta code :(

As usual people miss the point. The two guys' nervousness has nothing to do with Sony's motion control.Despite their nerves they made an impressive showing on the accuracy of the controller. And it was only a prototype.Just imagine a prototype from Sony is more impressive then a Wii-mote ever was. Seriously, I have been to the mountaintop, pal, and Microsoft gets criticized for almost everything it does as a company. EVERYTHING. It depends on where you go. From personal experience I can say that N4G is rife with Sony fanboys who will rag on the 360 until the day they get an aneurysm and lose the ability to speak and type. And even then, they will use hand gestures to point out how evil Microsoft is.

For example, the other day "GHOST OF SPARTA" made a list of all of the games presented by MS at E3, and even decided to add his personal thoughts on each. Of Splinter Cell Conviction he said: "With Xbox 1 graphics." I was very much astonished to see how shameless and stupid a comment he made. And don't get me started on all the other fanboys here, MS fanboys included.

Microsoft makes business decisions in order to keep the 360 a relevant and appealing product. Sony fanboys call that evil. I call that CAPITALISM.

Sony fanboys say, "You will never, ever see an MGS on the 360."

Hideo Kojima got up on stage at the E3 press conference and announced an MGS game on the 360.

Sony fanboys now say, "Pfft, it's a spin-off. It's going to suck. Hideo isn't even working on it. It's going to star Raiden, the worst character of MGS and the most hated. IT's going to be on PS3. I'd rather play the PSP game he's going to make exclusively for us, mature gamers."

Tony Hawk board was under good but, the only thing he could say positive about it was that a least it looked better than the wii board. Project Natal is weak only because I work on my feet all day, why would I want to come home a play video games that have me on my feet for who knows how long. I mean i've played games for 10hrs or more some nights. I like being able to put my feet and enjoy a great gaming, regardless if i'm playing my PS3 or my 360. The Beatles: Rock Band now that was funny and bad. I mean Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr looked like they got caught trespassing at E3. You can tell they don't play games. Everyone seems to be giving MS a better show score because of Project Natal. Am I the only one not impressed by that video? It's a "Proof Of Concept" video which means they don't actually have that working. It's what they want to have working in the future. The actors in the video was following the actions on the tv, they weren't actually playing the games. I agree that if they can get this to work it will be amazing but they don't as of right now. When they can show me something that works in real time then I will be impressed.

I don't know MS has Alan Wake which was mentioned like 3 years ago and a bunch of FPS, which all seem to be the same nowadays. Sony had a pretty good show but MS's was flashier. Overall I though Mass Effect 2 looks good and FFXIII, I was interested by Alan Wake and Heavy Rain but I still find myself wondering where have all the RPG's gone. Of course I asked the same question last year and everyone said TGS but their really wasn't much at TGS. I guess the gaming world revolves around sports and shooters now. i did notice this site overlooked modnation racers, mag, gran turismo 5, agent, final fantasy 14, white knight chronicles, an assload of psp games, among other things. why does this site list every single thing microsoft put out but not sony's? not only that, but four of games listed for the 360 were multiplatform.

seems like the web site overlooked all of sony's offerings or that they just didn't want to mention them. its also funny how sony's more accurate motion controller was dubbed "ripping off of nintendo and it's success" so was therefore listed as bad, but microsoft's natal, which is a rip-off (in my opinion), of the eyetoy gets good.

Actually what this E3 proved, is that MS have achieved their goal who was, from the begining of this generation, to be always 1 to 1.5 year ahead of sony in terms of Services & V.Games evolution.
Sony looks like they are condemned to run always behing the ghost of MS (past MS games & services) and just bringing something similar out with 1 or 2 years delay( Gears Of War--->Uncharted, CrackDown--->Infamous etc). Not to mention the extremely outdated gameplay of an average looking GoW3 and their motion joke who was looking like some amateurish stuff for 6 years old kids.
This is the perception of the international gaming community not just mine and this is projected from the begining of the year on the sales charts where Sony goes from the "Bad" to the "Worst" and Ms goes from the "Good" to the "Better".
Nobody (at least not me) could had ever predict that Ms launching their console 1 year earlier would have resulted to such a big disintegration in the former almighty engine of PS entertainment business.

the fact that Lost Planet 2 was CONFIRMED as coming to the Playstation 3 by Jack Tretton during their E3 press conference.

considering that up until that conference, many thought the game was exclusive to the 360, and how it looked to be such an "amazing game," i think that should have been up their on the "Good" portion of this "evaluation."

after watching the demonstration on my HDTV, i have to say i'm REALLY impressed by the potential of the game.

it brought back memories of Excitebike on the NES, and how much fun i had making ridiculous track setups on that.

considering how much i really loved the Mario Kart games (before they dropped the ball with Mario Kart Wii), i thought it was really cool and charming.

but hey, lets not mention all the things that Sony showed off at their conference, but they happened to list EVERYTHING that Microsoft showed in the "Good" category, and only Facebook and Twitter made it in the "Bad" category?

so Sony's motion control (which looks like it actually WORKS, and has a release window of Spring 2010) is "bad," but Microsofts motion control (which was only shown in video form at the presentation, and has NO release window, only, "the future"), and that's "good?"

even though i think Sony took E3 this year, i was pretty impressed by what Microsoft had to bring to the table.

in the end, Halo: ODST and Splinter Cell: Conviction are the ONLY games releasing in 2009. Mass Effect 2, Halo: Reach, and Alan Wake don't release until 2010. Natal releases sometime in the future. so much for Microsoft ONLY announcing games at E3 when they are hitting that calendar year.

on the other hand, Uncharted 2, MAG, Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time, Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, and Demon Souls all release in 2009. Heavy Rain, White Knight Chronicles, God of War 3, Gran Turismo 5, The Agency, DC Universe Online, Final Fantasy XIV Online, and The Last Guardian don't release until 2010, with Agent releasing sometime in the future.

bottom line, Sony had more games at E3, and in playable demo form, or with live demonstrations at E3 than Microsoft, and yet they still didn't win.

Sony had to show montage trailers encompassing all of the games hitting the PSP and PS3 this year, because they didn't have enough time in their 2 hour presentation to showcase them all. and they "didn't win" E3??

ultimately, Playstation gamers are having the last laugh, because they are getting a large variety of games, with DIVERSE gameplay (not just variations on the shooter genre), and best of all, the games are actually PUSHING the Playstation 3 hardware, utilizing engines built from the ground up for the PS3, and not just relying on a 3rd party middleware solution to compete.

But back to these arguements..... The rating was on their conferences, and yes there was multi-platform, but game developers like Infinity Ward know that microsoft is where the sales are for their game, and microsfot.... not SONY had them at their conference

And now for the games.... not a single person has announced that Mass Effect 2 and APB were both said to be games on XBOX360/PC in the G4 demos, so until further notice im calling them xbox360 EXCLUSIVES!!!! So that makes Halo:ODST, Splinter Cell: Conviction, Forza 3, and Left4Dead2 (Crackdown and APB idk their release date) with Mass Effect 2, Halo:Reach, Alan Wake, and worst case Crackdown 2 and APB coming out next year

now the PS3...... you guys brag about exclusives, but only MAG, Uncharted 2 and maybe Ratchet and Clank this year and all your other games NEXT YEAR!!!! by the time half of those get pushed back or ever come out (cough* GT5) microsoft will be announcing new games, new games such as Gears 3 more than likely, maybe the release of Natal in the fall of '10, the RARE games in development, and im guessing something else from Lionhead, among other things.

No one here is brainwashed. It just so happens various human beings have what we like to call, different opinions. While you didn't go "wow!" at MS' conference, I didn't go "wow!" at Sony's. To me, Sony's PS2 and PSP offer nothing I want, which already eliminates 2/3 of their conference. Then they revealed PS3 games, which I've already seen most of (Uncharted 2).

Sorry to tell you, but there are those out there like myself that couldn't give a $hit about your precious Metal Series. I'd much rather have Splinter cell than that any day. MS had a decent showing.. Natal was attached to a pc but they didnt show you that lol.. the PS motion controller was attached to a ps3.. the only good i saw in games from MS were splinter cell and alan wake.. Halo is w.e we gonna have a halo title every year apperently.. You guys keep trying to claim that Microsoft is somehow WORSE because it displayed exclusive footage and demos from "multiplat games".

Is there some unwritten rule the exclusive games are better than mutliplat games? COD4 still trumps KZ2 in terms of PS3 sales, 360 sales, PS3 online community, 360 online community, awards, reviews, personal experience, etc, etc. My favorite game is fallout 3 which is also a Multiplat. Don't get me wrong, i definitely give props to Uncharted, but aside from that i am not impressed (thus why i bought a 360).

it does not make you "better" to display a bunch of exclusive titles. When i look at the PS3 i see the long list of haphazard exclusives as a weakness on Sony's part. Clearly they have more exclusive support and they are trying to monopolize on it. They have convinced you guys that games are worthless unless they are exclusive, and this is stupid (obviously).

So far the games i am looking forward too are Alan wake, Uncharted 2(i have access to plenty of PS3's), Modern Warfare, MG:R (if it ends up being good), FFXIII, Lost planet 2, and Splinter cell conviction.

You might tell me... "the reason you look forward to multiplat games is because 360 doesnt have any exclusives", my response to you is "NO, i look forward to mutliplats because i am not 'shocked' and 'awed' by the concept of 'exclusiveness'". Or i would say "who cares"

Okay the PS3 has more exclusives........ yeah... and?

Recently they announced that Modern warfare 2 would push the 360 to its "upper limits" and this idea excites me. You PS3 fanboys are so obsessed with the 500$ you spent, that you say "haha the 360 is maxed out", but i am excited because finally a developer is at least ATTEMPTING to push the 360.

Sure the cell gives the PS3 the ability to add additional "pretty shaders", but you need to check yourself at the door..... The computer i had the day the PS3 came out was approximately 10x stronger than the PS3 (or 11x stronger than the 360). If you bought your PS3 because of its "power" then the entire world laughing at you. It was "junk hardware" before it even came out. Based on this notion, clearly us 360 fans didn't buy the 360 based on its "power" (i use that term loosely since the 360 does AA, AF, texturing, etc better than the PS3).

The cell excels at many things, such as media transcoding (which the PS3 doesn't do) and various other tasks. This is why the CELL has made alot of progress in the MEDICAL INDUSTRY. However thus far there has been literally NO production of Cell processors for gaming (aside from the PS3). Go ask a gamer what kind of processor he has in his rig, and he will likely tell you that he is using a Quad-core processor. If he is technologically savvy he will even tell you WHY. This is because multi-core/multi-threaded processors are MUCH BETTER for gaming, for reasons i will discuss with you IN LENGTH if you personal message me.

In fact, currently, the Cells biggest "claim to fame" is that it is amazing at compensating. particularly in the case of Mutliplat games. The PS3's main logic processor is much weaker than the 360 processor and therefore the cell is forced to 'compensate' for this difference. Thus why you see Multiplat games that are almost identical. but the 360 often has the edge.

So there you have it

Neither of these consoles are particularly "powerful". At best, you are basically attempting to compare VHS to Betamax "but, but, but Betamax is 'technically better'". If "graphics" and "power" are your top priorities, a PS3 was a terrible purchase. Try a computer. I will even sell you my old computer (the one thats 10x stronger than the PS3) it goes for about.. 400$ now. interesting.

Quite honestly i would consider these consoles very "equal" to their respective audience.

I am merely trying to point out the terrible logic a lot of you PS3 fanboys hold so dear. I have experience developing for both consoles, and i can truly tell you that to anyone who knows 'alot' about hardware and the benefits of both consoles would tell you that the systems are VERY equal. your beating a dead horse.

Actually, I'm not a fanboy at all. I can't wait for Sony's PS3 lineup this year and all I was remarking on is the fact that many people on this website seem to think that their opinion is far superior to others. That's all Jess.
