Report: 30 Million Connected Blu-ray Players by 2013

Home Media Magazine:"Internet connectivity beyond the PC to home networks, including Blu-ray Disc players and high-definition televisions, is expected to reach 60% household penetration in the United States, totaling 91 million devices by 2013, according to a new report from Yankee Group.

The Boston-based research firm said proliferation of connected home networks would include 30 million Blu-ray players with BD Live functionality, 50 million HDTVs and 11 million digital media adapters such as Roku and Vudu players, Apple TV, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and TiVo HD DVR, among others.

Yankee Group said consumer adoption of entertainment consumption would pressure subscription and pay-TV-based services to innovate in order to remain relevant.

In addition, the report said advertiser spots and consumer habits will change reflecting the transformative effects of connectivity.

"No matter how big a company is today, if it does not prepare for the tidal wave of connectivity that is nearing the shore, they are certain to end up underwater," said Joshua Martin, senior analyst and report author with Yankee Group."
