X360 Unannounced "AAA" Exclusive Confirmed for E3

What does AAA mean?

I thought AAA meant average rating of 90% or above. (To most people anyway)

To me personally, AAA means the production value. Like Infamous probably will end up with an average rating of 86%-88% around there. But that game is AAA to me. On the same day PS3 also gets Cross Edge, that NIS RPG with characters from different games. Cross Edge is not AAA, Disagaea 3 is not AAA, a PSN title is not AAA.

To me, it's the size and production value that makes a game AAA. There's always failed AAA titles like Lair.

Maybe to most AAA means reviews of 90 and above. But to me it's more the production values of the project.

But if you think an average rating of 90% or above is what makes AAA, that's totally cool. I can understand that. That makes sense also.

For me it's just tough to think games like Resistance, Dead Rising, Uncharted, Infamous, Left 4 Dead, as not being AAA titles because they finished with an average rating lower than 90%, and yet something like that XBOX arcade game Braid is.

People often mistakenly use AAA to mean "a great game" or "a highly reviewed game".

The long established use of AAA in video gaming actually refers to the amount of hype, marketing and budget behind a game. A game doesn't have to be great to be AAA as long as it is a major, splashy release with high production values.

Lair would be an example of a game that could be considered AAA without being highly reviewed.

I dunno. Maybe? Microsoft pays for reviews? Sony pays for reviews? In my first post, I was alluding to past allegations of Microsoft "buying" reviews of exclusives, specifically Halo 3. How can Microsoft know that they have a AAA title on their hands when no one has seen it?

Guys, "AAA" does not mean anything about it's review scores. It's a class of game, from a publishing perspective.

Here is the loose hierarchy: Shovelware < Anime Game < Movie Tie-in < Budget Title < AAA Game

Any of those games can be rated anywhere in the ratings spectrum, but their "expected" quality of a AAA game is higher. For example, Haze was a "AAA" game... but it blew.

These are all considered triple A titles, they are usually tied to well established I.P.'s or sequels.

Think of them as Summer Blockbuster movies that everyone is pumped to watch.

I just had an "argument" about what makes something AAA. At least from whats said here in N4G, AAA titles refer to those 90 or above on most reviews. Now people are saying its relative to the budget of the title. I dont know.

I know there's a sizable budget for say Madden 2010, but I never heard it called AAA. I know games like Castle Crashers and Flower are considered AAA, but that has nothing to do with their budgets.

Ryback sez Halo Wars isnt AAA, he told me this before. I disagree with him personally, its def AAA to me, but does that make it AAA in the general sense, since its reviews were good, some great, but overall under 90?

Not on N4G. A certain game recently was called such things as "best game ever", and "game of the year" well over a month before it's release. Just read some threads about upcoming hyped exclusives and you will see that actually playing a game is not a prerequisite for deeming it to be "AAA" quality.

I'm thinking the Rare unannounced title. I agree though, MS needs to certainly 'wow' people (that should read 'wow me', as a fellow 360 owner) with more games. Sony is bringing it with both barrels.

MS's 360 could use far more than 'a couple' more exclusives. The only way I can see this balancing out is if MS announces some of the same third-party games we've seen announced for PS3 or has kept a sizeable amount of exclusives under impressive secrecy.

I don't see it happening, but I will certainly relish the taste of crow if it does.

Sony has 2 previous generations of titles built up, so they should be expanding into newer titles now. With that being said, they still have tons of sequels as well. Killer Instinct, KOTOR 360(doubt it will be exclusive), or who knows. Doubt it's Forza because despite being unannounced, everybody knows it will come.

Sony's upcoming lineup has lots of sequels, just like 360's. Sony's top three upcoming games are God of War 3, Uncharted 2, and Gran Turismo 5 - all sequels. Both also have some promising new IP's coming up. However, proven franchises are where the real money is, and Sony and MS know it. Neither company has a monopoly on fresh ideas.

This is absurd, how the media treats this stuff. The game is not out, has not been sold, and has not been reviewed... yet it's being labeled as a AAA title? That's just asinine, no matter what console/company it comes from. It also suggests that the other titles are what, of lesser quality, and its already known? That's just silly.

I got Mass effect for the PC
I can get Bioshock for the PC but skipped it..
I played Halo 1 on the PC, Halo 2 on the xbox, Halo 3 felt like Halo 2, and since I didn't enjoy Halo 2, so I didn't bother with Halo 3..

Gears of War 1 I can get for the PC..

Gears of war 2 however, I'm not sure if it'll ever come to the PC but w/e..

the only game that merits a X360 buy for me is Gears of War, but since that's only 1 game compared to the many exclusive PS3 games that I got for my PS3..

bottom line, if this so-called Xbox360 exclusive comes to the PC, guess where I'm buying my version? ...

The user base of the 360 is dominated by Halo fans(esp online) and as such you'd expect the most successful exclusive shooter franchise to sell as well as it does esp when, so far, it's the only FPS exclusive to the 360 that's really hit the mark critically OR with gamers.

These same people(of whom I guess I am one)are very likely to enjoy Gears aren't they? Another great franchise but also one without much competition on it's platform, no?

Sony has a couple of newer than Halo ezxclusive FPS series -one recovering from a poor last outing and another trying to build on what it achieved on a platform that fewer people even bought for shooters anyway-look at the way games with a longer PS heritage sell on PS3 compared to 360. Games like RE5, SF4 and TR-all sold better on the PS3 worldwide and even in the US as a percentage on consoles bought. That COD4 sold better(though not by as much as I thought it would)on 360 also shows which games sell best on 360 and, as I said, Gears and Halo have no exclusive competition why wouldn't they sell better than their PS3 counterparts that do?

The PS3 demographic and 360 demographic are obviously different in some way-I think that the PS3 may be generally slightly older, prolly has more RPG fans(JRPG fans at least) and is basically a bit more wide ranging(as a general rule)than the 360 demographic is. Sales of MGS4(which in it's realm is as close to Halo as a dominant franchise exclusive in it's genre) does have Gears like sales and the stealth/TPS genre is nowhere near as big as the FPS is, is it?

Can't we just enjoy what we enjoy and leave juggling the sales figures without knowing everything to the analysts that keep falling on their faces? Different platforms have different gamers and different exclusive line ups all of which effect sales of said games-they aren't directly comparable-and that's without going into Sony's apparent inability to market anything recently.

Both plats have some GREAT exclusives and long may they push each other towards greater gaming experiences. It's a win/win whether you own a 360, a PS3 or both plus a Wii, a DSi, a PSP and a monster rig. And, at a push, an iPhone I guess-it all forces devs to stay on their toes.

My guess for this "AAA" game is that it'll either be a trailer for a big franchise game(justifying the AAA that way)or be a new IP from a very big dev(read Valve, Rare, Epic or Lionhead-even a new Bungie IP perhaps)but whatever it is it knows, as do MS, that it must be good as Sony have got their nternals to the point where the games will just keep rolling out from now on-they don't really have to reveal much we haven't seen at this E3 as long as they can give us firm dates for the big hitters we already know about. But they prolly will and here's hoping MS have something amazing to compete with this-again , it's all good for us gamers, is it not?

Not really ^ i own both systems and support both heavily and while i feel sony has hot exclusives the 360 has the advantage where it counts and thats LIVE and its community.

Having exclusives is obviously needed but its not the end all to everything. IF not advertised well or not hyped properly or is the type of exclusive your fanbase isnt in to then it doesnt matter if you have 40 exclusives versus 15 especially when 5 out of the 15 sell better or are played more often then 38 out of the 40 as is the case with sony this gen.

Churning out exclusive after exclusive does not guarantee anything no matter how good they are and killzone 2 is an example of that so is r2 and a few others.

Sony needs to drop many bombshells in order to save themselves. and without these few things they will with no doubt be stuck in third.

1.A massive price drop.

2.MATCH what live does tooth and nail.

if those 2 things dont happen at e3, then no exclusive will save sony this gen, MS isnt sleeping on the job and neither is nintendo.

Sony are very unlikely to have a game sell like Gears or Halo(L4D isn't much of a jump mind)because of the way they work and the demographic of their console owners-and if they weren't making the cash just how are devs like Insomniac managing to expand at the rate they are while getting a game out every year?

All the games you mention doing fantastically(though still only thee of them)happen to suit the demogaphic of a console built on the basis of a huge bumber of Halo fans-shooters will as a general rule sell much better on a console with the 360 demographic-it's why games like SF4,TR and RE5 have sold better on the PS3 and why FF13 figures on PS3 will dwarf those on the 360.

Ut doesn't make Sony tight, it doesn't make MS right-it's just the way things are and as a result their business models are very different. I expect a price cut in Oct/Nov and not before for the PS3-by then the parts will have come down in price again plus Sony will be out of the existing supplier deals that have cost them so much and with the price cut plus FF13 and VS coming soon expect a much tighter race(esp with their really big hitter GT5 which does have Halo numbers, and GOW3 which will sell Gears numbers arriving at a similar time).

PS3 and 360 may be closer in actual numbers of consoles being used than they are in sales(when you factor in the fail rates for both machines)anyway and both have sold enough to survive for the rest of this gen already-devs even state that they make more from the PS3 even now-it promises to be a long and fruitful fight for us gamers and, for once, I'm very glad I saved enough to get all platforms covered this gen-I'd actually feel I was missing out if I hadn't.

Dude, I recently got another 360 Elite for £170 are they really that much more expensive at home in the US? While I got my newest 360(which seems far better put together than any I've had previously which is great)for that I can't get anpther PS3 for less than around £300 atm-the machine does need another cut and Sony will do it as soon as they possib;y can-again I gyess around autumn.

Seems odd that a PS3 is as chep as an Elite in the US to me-or is there still a very big difference between the two PS3 sku prices out there as recently it isn't much of a difference in the UK between 160 and 80 gig models. Not where I look anyway.

-It sure isn't the multiplayer (11 weapons in multiplayer, 8 maps (10 with the $6.99 DLC), 10 ranks, 8 classes, 5 game modes).

Halo 3, Call of Duty 4, Call of Duty: World at War (maybe), Left 4 Dead, Counter Strike and BioShock completely dominate Killzone 2 in every shape and form except for the overall look of the game. Which to me... is pointless, because a shooter revolves around the gameplay.

AAA does not revolve around it's scores. It revolves around the overall look, feel, production, artwork, and love that is put into a game. There are many games that have not scored above a 90 that destroy a lot of 90+ games.

Why can't people just try to not care about who'es better, watch what happens at E3, and if they have the money, buy all of the games that interest their own personal preferences?
