It sacrificed heavy armour and self-sealing fuel tanks for superior armaments and a long range, and as a result it could out-manoeuvre any of its American contemporaries too. With a 90-0 kill tally over mainland China, a squadron of Zeros were one of the most feared sights for American F4F Wildcat pilots and Flying Fortresses hoping to drop their payload onto a carrier. When the US changed its tactics and technology to put Zeros at a disadvantage, the Japanese made these dextrous fighters even more notorious by turning them into manned missiles, and the Kamikaze pilot was born."
