Sony: No current plans for 80GB PS3

Sony has told Eurogamer today that it currently has no plans to produce an 80GB PS3, despite emerging reports that it filed with the FCC for the model.

"The 80GB we're not making a comment on, but we don't have any plans at the moment," a spokesperson for Sony Europe told Eurogamer.

Rumors began after the company filed with the US Federal Communications Commission to request a class II permissive change to reflect some Bluetooth tweaks to the console. Among the models listed for this were the currently available 20GB and 60GB offerings, as well as a new 80GB model.

It does, of course, follow yesterday's news that Microsoft will be introducing a new black Xbox 360 Elite with an HDMI port and 120GB sometime in the late summer.

Eurogamer finds it a touch bizarre that Sony would only go as high as 80GB, especially considering Ken Kutaragi's past comments of wanting to hit the 250GB storage size. Then again, you can just buy a regular PC hard disk and put it in the PS3 anyway.

The PS3 sucks...isn't that a little extreme? You may not like it but as many have said, the graphics on the 360 and PS3 are comparable. In the least, it's as good as the 360. It has fewer games but its been out for 5 months. Rmember the selection on our 360 5 months in? There was no competition and it was bone dry. I went back to playing Halo 2 and PS2 games.
All systems from the beginning start off slow. The 360 did, the PS3 has and also the Wii. They all came with hype but all fall into the same category. The bright light is that they will be ramping up as we approach the fall and winter seasons. I know, you already know this.

If I want to upgrade my HD, I can. I can put 120 gigs on my system for an extra 60 bucks. What's the point of a new scew if you can swap out your HD for a bigger one.

A NEW SKU just for a 20GB HDD increase doesn't make any sense. Especially when the constructor isn't a greedy ass and doesn't force you to use HIS hard drive formats at like 2 times the price.

New 80GB SKU just doesn't make sense. All I can think of is this might be a down the road ...like a couple of years down the road re-design similar to what they did with the slimline.

@Raist...if you don't think Sony is greedy...then you are sadly mistaken. MS, Sony and Nintendo ....are all VERY greedy and would like nothing more than to sell you a plain box for profit if they thought you would buy it. Sony's strategy may be different....but don't be fooled they want every one of your dollars if they can get it.

Why does this article focus on the hard drive? IMO tweaking the PS3's Bluetooth receiver is a tad more important. Leaves me wondering not only how prevalent controller drop-off actually is, but how prevalent Sony expected it to become.

I never ever had any problem with my controller, and so did all my friends who own a PS3.

That said, none of us use other equipment that could interfere with it.

I'd say it happens to me once a week, and usually lasts for about 3 seconds. It's annoying as hell, but not a big deal. Hopefully a firmware update could fix it, but if not that, then maybe a minor hardware tweak in upcoming models. The ps2 had multiple hardware models (the only noticeably different one being when the switched to slimline). Over a console's lifecycle revisions tend to happen often, so the bluetooth problem is definitely something to look at. Not something to make another SKU over though.

Like Raist, I haven't had the problem arise either and again like Raist, I don't have any devices that are supposedly the cause of this drop of connectivity. Everything I run is wired except the PS3 and 360 controllers. I rarely have an issue with my 360 controllers either.

I think 60GB is perfectly fine for me. 80GB is great, 100, sounds awesome, but 120 sounds a little far-off, I, myself, wouldn't need to buy that, but I'm not complaining at all or anything like that. But, I would just get a 60GB and stick in my old computer's HDD :P

Wow. I almost pre-ordered my PS3, but before that I just checked this website to see what was going on. Well, I just bought another PSP for me, and since my bro has another, we can play now, but Sony says that they are going to re-model the PSP so that sucks. XD
