Rumored Microsoft 3D Wii killer: we think we played with it

ars technica writes "Microsoft is dealing with its own E3 rumors, including a new product that will bring motion-sensing controls to the 360 without a handheld peripheral. We saw the exact same technology at CES 2008. Better yet, Microsoft has been in talks to buy the company in question. Ars explores what could be the next big thing in gaming."

why cant microsoft just use the companies technology without buying them i mean we all know whats going to happen after microsoft have the technology[hint look at ensemble and the 5 other studios microsoft used to have]

GiantEnemyCrab5898d ago

It was only a rumor and MS never bought the company. So it looks like they are just using the technology at this point.

Is that going to work for you? I know it means you will have to find something else to troll on it about. Why don't you try #4's approach and just call it an EyeToy rip-off.

Elven65898d ago

Without buying them they can switch sides, also buying a company will help in the long run and have a impact on stocks. Keep in mind for tech like this the use can expand beyond the games division and into other Microsoft ventures.

Here's a list of Microsoft acquisitions, many of these became successful only after Microsoft had bought them. Others were either merged into other development teams.

http://www.microsoft.com/ms...

Buying companies is nothing new, everyone does it, even Nintendo and Sony, the later also buying companies not related to the gaming division.

GVON5898d ago

and I got a disagree, but based on that pic and the 3dv stuff that was shown last year,it's a eye toy/vision cam +,as that boxing game shows it can detect depth so thats why I call it +
I can't see it killing the Wii,the Wii works because they kept it simple, kids can use it,and so can older people because you physically hold something, and their brains can relate to that,if it's just a 3dv then it won't attract the casual.I tried my mum and other family members with eye toy/ps eye and they couldn't click with it,but with the wii, they held it like a golf club and were playing instantly.

turn around and ask, why can't companies just allow Microsoft to use their technology...and sell out to them. I think sometimes people forget that Microsoft is not a non-profit company.......and they are in it to make money, and often times that requires securing the rights from competitors.

STONEY45898d ago

"HMMMMM MS Its amazing not omly they have the best, hardware and software, now 3D"

360 has best 3-D? First, we haven't even seen the 360's 3-D yet. Have you seen WipEout HD and Motorstorm 2 in 3-D? It looks absolutely stunning, so it's gonna take alot to beat that.

"One more for MS, but stanby sony will shortly reply with a boomerang, no wait with an almost as good 3d technology."

And apparently you don't know that Sony had been working on 3-D before Microsoft, so it's more like Micrsoft replying to Sony.

XxZxX5898d ago

optional peripherals can't kill a required components.
Just like HD-DVD add-on trying to kill blu-ray.
This motion detectors cannot kill Wii nun chuk at all.

ZuperAmazingCooKie5898d ago

Microsoft will be patent trolling whoever tries to mimic their gimmicks and if that's so then Microsoft could monopolize the game industry (which is what they always wanted, as with every one of their ventures).

BX815898d ago

For the same reason you troll the majority of MS articles. They feel it needs to happen. It's a business sweetie. It's made for competitors not for the faint of heart. Maybe you should go back under the bridge little troll...that's right back under... there you go...right there.

majorsuave5897d ago

Well that will reel in the people for whom holding and using a peripheral is too complicated.
And pretty much anyone that enjoys games already.

FrankenLife5897d ago

I like holding a controller. I like laying down on my couch, controller in hand, relaxing while playing. I come home from work tired wanting to relax with a game. I don't want to sitting up waving my hands like an idiot to play a game....*looks at the wii*

"Even more impressive was the ability to control media functions with gestures. You could swipe your way through your movies, interact with pictures, change channels, all with a small camera and your arms"

Now ..thats awesome..just like minority report ha

Pennywise5898d ago

That is pretty cool. I saw a video of a PS3 doing this a while ago... I cant wait until it comes to life!

Hobadoon5898d ago (Edited 5898d ago )

The sixense controller. Something completely different yet still cool.

http://www.sixense.com

Or I could be wrong but I haven't seen anything like this for the PS3 (in terms of not using any type of remote) Because it would have been much talked about right now.

ShabzS5898d ago (Edited 5898d ago )

for this ... a karate kid the movie game... wipe the car in 60 seconds.... wax on was off (yeah with the motions) ... hey i said i can envision a game .. not a GOOD game..

DelbertGrady5898d ago

Let it go. Your PS3 won't come to life, no matter how hard you try. You need to realize that it's just a piece of plastic.

Sony Rep5898d ago (Edited 5898d ago )

Fail. Just an eye Toy rip off.

Don't they know that half the appeal of the wii is its peripherals?

N4PS3G5898d ago (Edited 5898d ago )

lol Eye toy can't even capture depth ..hell..you can't even use it with the lights on

This is real 3D ..not just a gimmick with side movements

Sony Rep5898d ago

"Real 3D"

haha. Doesn't sound like a gimmick at all...

IcarusOne5898d ago (Edited 5898d ago )

Great name. Great pic. Great point.

@ Sony Rep - The point of the wii is not the peripherals - that's about the dumbest thing I've ever heard. All the wii gave us was a bigger casual market and less materials and focus on the games most of us actually care about. But keep on hating if you must.

This is motion sensing I can get behind, if it works and if it's reliable. This is the type of tech that can revolutionize the way we interact with our computers. Like the mouse. Like the touch screen.

mintaro5898d ago

"Gaming in 4D!"

That doesn't sound like a gimmick at all....

See what i did there?

:)

XxZxX5898d ago

yup they all are gimmick, along with the eyetoy. and your point is mintaro

Sitdown5898d ago

gimmick-an ingenious or novel device, scheme, or stratagem, esp. one designed to attract attention or increase appeal.

-to equip or embellish with unnecessary features, esp. in order to increase salability, acceptance

So by those definitions...the line between the ps3's extras and necessities are blurred.

-PEEDO BEAR-5898d ago

Trying to defend Sony and failed.

N4PS3G5898d ago

@ Sony Rep

I'm sorry ..I forgot you guys are so advanced with you 4D graphics that everything here on earth feels outdated.

Must be real nice in sonyland ..a place with innovation a endless originality ;)

I appreciate the article but this guy must be living in a delayed universe, The reputation was ruined 10+ years ago and hasn't recovered since. As such people have voted with their wallets and stopped buying Xbox products in large amounts.

YourMommySpoils2h ago

Their reputation was lost way before that. From the moment Microsoft said they entering the console business, we all knew it would be a downgrade.

What reputation is this threatening exactly? 😂

Lightning771d 3h ago

Rumors of Turn 10 being either shut down or hit with massive lay offs is on the horizon.

The issue is MS will do something right only to do something very, very wrong. And they do this what seems calculative at this point. Doesn't matter what they do the Investors and leadership want more and more money an endless bottomless pit of purr insatiable greed. A company that acts like it's broke or hurting is what really, really infuriates me. They've surpassed apple again well over 3 trillion who acts like they're a million dollar company is fk stupid. Pivots and changes for no reason and can't do things for more than a year with out a pivot or changing their metrics.

Christopher6h ago

That would be really bad since Phil just hyped up next year as a big Forza year at Summer Game Fest.

@christopher: “ That would be really bad since Phil just hyped up next year as a big Forza year at Summer Game Fest”
The key word big can be ether good or bad 🤷🏿only time can tell

DarXyde4h ago

First Forza being generated entirely via AI?

If any company would do it, it'd be them.

As someone who has been gaming nearly as long as gaming has been around (since the early 70's), you'd think I'd be against this. Having grown up with all the major platforms and the whole notion of physical ownership... but I'm not. i embrace this as it is a revolutionary convenience. And one i know for a fact many (especially here) have not even given the fair chance to use. I get it... i was there too. But now i have a new outlook on it. It really is a hell of an option if you just want to play with no commitments. By no means am i saying this should replace traditional gaming, its an option. And one that people should look at optimistically as a way to compliment traditional gaming. There is room for both to thrive.

Zerobalance1d 13h ago

I tend to use streaming on new games in GamePass. To see if I like the game. If I do, I'll download it for a better experience. It's so convenient & useful.
