Killzone 2 and Halo 3 win sales awards in UK

Killzone 2 has sold over 200,000 copies in the UK, with Halo 3 finally reaching 1 million sold for Microsoft's Xbox 360.

In the latest ESPLA sales awards (March 2009, April's results have yet to be announced), the PlayStation 3 exclusive Killzone 2 has been awarded the Gold Award. This means that as of the end of March, the game has sold over 200,000 copies in the country.

Even with long sales leg, most games especially the hardcore variety like KZ2 usually sell the most upon release and then quickly diminishes.

Selling another 800k is unlikely, but not impossible. None the less, it sold extremely well in the UK for it's almost 2 month existence.

While that certainly is the case a lot of the time (and especially with the 360) this isn't quite as prominent on the PS3. If you look at sales of Resistance, Resistance 2, Motorstorm, LBP, etc... none of them were particularly strong right out of the gate but they've all been steady sellers since. Keep moving 10k-30k a week and those sales certainly add up over time. You wouldn't look at a game like Motorstorm and guess that it's over 3 million, but that's what steady sales will do.

If you're talking about the quality of the game when you say "league" then you're dead wrong. Halo3 is just old dude. Compared to other games that came out last year and have come out this year, the game looks like a trial for the real Halo3.

If you're talking sales, yeah halo dominates for basically two reasons.

1. Marketing. It's everywhere.

2. The Xbox label simply doesn't have many faces. Let's not sugarcoat things. It has one...Master Chief. Without Halo, there would be no Gears. No Mass Effect. No 360. So when you have a console with a large install base, and basically one game that represents the entire label, it's gonna sell like hotcakes.

Biggest sales surges are always in the first months. It's unlikely that Killzone 2 will reach Halo 3's numbers in the same time period, but regardless it has sold very well for games in general.

I love my PS3, but there's no denying how well online games sell on the 360 due to its dominance in the online market.

Being a huge fan of Halo (I got the books and all the games even the helmet!) I must say I was under whelmed with Halo 3. Halo 2 wasn't all that great either it just had the impeccable online function. Honestly, since Halo: CE the franchise just became a joke. I got to give M$ credit though for the marketing of the game, and being the sucker for Halo that I am I will be getting ODST.

Jolly, you've never come across the ESPLA sales awards before then. They are given out when a title reaches a milestone. They are monthly. The PS3 version of GTA4 was awarded the 600k award a month or so back. It'll be around 900k by now.

I'm hoping you do realize that feature is not new to Halo3 but rather, games on the PS1 also had this too. Yes, this would be cool to have in KZ2 but we're also seeing that Sony is trying to implement this feature in a tonne of games to interact with PSN's HOME feature and youtube connectivity too.

However, I must say, you haven't seen this recording feature done with any other 360 title apart from halo3 have you? For now only a few PSN DLable games have this but it's obvious with the Uncharted announcement that more PS3 disc games will be having this feature and in a more robust fashion too.

Actually it took 2 years for Halo 3 to go diamond in the UK. The only other Diamond game is GTA4, which to date is the top selling PS3 game ever. Killzone on the other hand will never go diamond in the UK. It has just recently reached a million worldwide. In fact they just announce Killzone 2 had a million players online. Halo 3 had a million players that played online within the first 20 hours. The game just celebrated reaching it's BILLIONth Online match. The game sold 3.3 million in 12 days. The game draws over 1 million people around the world to play it online everyday. so if you want to dust off the PS2 to make you point, just keep going, add in Genesis, and Super Nintendo. It won't change a thing. So 'suck' that Ultra F-Boy.

When Halo was marketed out the ass....Had 2 games behind it and was the only decent Fps on 360 it has to do those numbers. Factor that in when Halo is basicly 360's flagship title I am not surprised it did those numbers.Plus halo has been around for 2 years? With its huge fanbase and being the only decent online game on 360 Exclusively it reaching its billioneth game played is not surprising. Now when you factor in kz2 where it only had 1 commercial and only rode on internet hype alone.....selling over 1 mil is pretty decent in only a few months. Plus with a smaller install base on ps3 kz'2 number are really good.

Also when I mentioned ps2 I only said what Microsoft did....Not nintendo or sega...Keep other companies out of this...Plus there is no dust on the ps2 as its still selling around 10k every month so its slowly dieing out and going out gracefully.
