PS3 to kill PC gaming?

Phil Harrison, president of Sony Computer Entertainment's Worldwide Studios, has stated that the PlayStation 3 will kill the PC. "We believe that the PS3 will be the place where our users play games, watch films, browse the Web, and use other [home] computer functions," said Harrison. "The PlayStation 3 is a computer. We do not need the PC."

so they want me to spend X amount of money to replace my PC and why is it I have serious doubts there'll be a word processor on it? Yeah, I can see SO many kids doing their homework on a PS3 lol

First release the system. I live here in NYC and just got off the phone with my friend who works at Gamestop. He claims that the big bosses sent a memo letting the store know that they may start taking orders around the end of summer or even as late as october. I don't know about you guys but that sounds like a shortage or the system may not make it this year. Because when Gamestop took orders early for the 360 they had to return people's money because of a shortage. Two the 360 could be a computer running Vista when Vista comes out. Does that mean it should happen? No! They should just concentrate on one thing at a time before trying to eliminate everything in the world. Come on Sony Get the system out first.

I think that has less to do with Sony's problems and more to do with MS's problems. Would you want to be a gamestop manager having to call however many dozens of people telling them their PS3 didn't come in just like their 360 didn't?

My local Gamestop said they will only have 2 or 3 PS3's per store at launch. I don't think they should take pre-orders, because you know the employee's will be the first on the list. It happened at all of my local Gamestop's/eBgames with the 360.

It's Sony's problem now because the owners of these franchise stores are very hesitant to take orders at this time. If the stores are scared to take orders because of a shortage then what that tells you about how Sony stands in their eye's. I mean come on if they take orders around October that is going to cause alot of problems for Sony as well as for the stores. There was stores and people that was held up for a 360. What do you think is going to happen when the PS3 comes out. I see alot of people getting hurt for their systems even fatal because of this.

Oh and the fact that games will not advance until a next gen console comes out.

I don't know that it will replace my pc entirely, but I certainly plan on using it for internet etc. I have never been a hardcore pc gamer, so needless to say I haven't updated the old pc in awhile. Bottom line is, you will always have console camps and pc camps, but I think this gen (ps3 wii xbox360) are going to blur that line some.

How the hell could a PS3 replace a PC?

One is a console
One is a personal computer

They do totally different things, regardless of how sony want people to see it. Playing movies, MP3's, web browsing, games and CD's makes it a media centre, not a PC.

&&Of course I love media centres, but they can't replace my pc.

In all honesty i Think Sony is touting too much Functionality uses here... i mean no doubt i'm gettinbg a PS3 at launch but it being a pc... is a total joke.. harrison should have said that alot of the main functions that we use a pc for will be used more on the PS3, like Video streaming and downloading, music, and web browsing, chatting with buddies and playing games online... stuff u can do included word processing and accounting, and that aint happening at all... so that is pure bogus hosre ish...

Movies(which I am pretty sure I don't use my PC for anyway), surfing the internet, etc... Somebody hit it right on the head: I am pretty sure that I will not be typing my novel on my PS3. Does the PS3 support my scanner and printer, too? Does it have good photo editing software?

I am looking forward to the PS3, but I am pretty sure that it will not be replacing my PC.

i find it hard to see pc games dieing. Alot of gamers play for the customization and modding aspect which just isnt possible on consoles, dont get me wrong, i love my "generic next gen machine" but i also love my pc. theres room for both.

First off Phil Harrison never said that the PS3 would replace/kill/moot etc the PC. The websites took the original interview and twisted it and added thier own slant to things which in respectible journalism is a complete no no.

The though of upgrading your PC to play one game, take about 1500 to 2200$ for that upgrading... Which most peoples wish not to do. LIke UT2007, if you want the full features + graphic, you'll have to upgrade for most and that is a big issue when it come to the cost of uprading...

In the past when I have upgraded my gaming PC it was never about "one game" and it was not necessary to spend "$1500-2000" to do so.

Upgrades allow PC's to do far more than their original configuration besides just gaming. Graphics Card upgrades? Yeah, those are generally for gaming only. But additional RAM, faster processors, power supplies and the like all have multiple applications beyond mere gaming upgrades.

It is a bit misleading to state "$1500-2000" upgrade as if that is the de facto standard and only way to upgrade a gaming PC (by essentially starting over). To get ALL the latest bells and whsitles, it may actually cost that much, but often times it is far less depending on where the PC gamer is starting from.

Even so, the very idea that PS3 or XB360 will remain on an even footing graphically and features-wise with PC's beyond 2008 is laughable. It very well may cost a lot to reach that perormance point, but PC's will no doubt blow away either game console within 18 months of the release of DX10/Vista. Just a fact, not a fan-boyism.

He didnt say "the PS3 will kill the PC" He said the PS3 didnt need the PC. He was takeing a swipe at Xbox which to get certain funtcions you have to link your 360 to the PC. The PS3 wont have to do that from what he is saying. I love how cheap news media puts words in people mouth and changes things to suit themselves. Lets be smart here. Sony sells computers as well and isnt going to kill that division of it, lets read it like it was meant to be read and stop reading things into it.

Oo yess PC owner that wish to play UT2007 with full graphic have to upgrade to the Vista... wow how greaful, and you will also have to upgrade your GPU card also, and if you wish for it to be great like the PS3 you will need the 7800gtx or even the 7900gtx, and tell me how much does thoes 2 GPU run at cost?... same price as PS3 and some places are even cost more...

And dont forget taht the Ram will also be needing to upgrade also and Cpu, Motherboard... Hmm that look like you needa upgrade your whole computer there... and that will run you around 2200... or more
