Toshiba Corp. said on Tuesday it would still like to develop a unified format for advanced optical DVD discs, but two competing -- and incompatible -- products are likely to hit the market at first.
Toshiba is a leading proponent of next-generation HD DVD optical disc technology, which competes with the Blu-ray standard promoted by Sony Corp. and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., a maker of Panasonic brand electronics.
"We have not given up on a unified format. We would like to seek ways for unifying the standards if opportunities arise," Toshiba President Atsutoshi Nishida told an annual shareholders' meeting.
While I am hopeing that Blu-ray will win out and not because I am going to buy a PS3 and want it to win the format war and make the PS3 look good but because Stargate SG-1/Atlantis will end up making it to BD since MGM is now owned by Sony, but I would like to see a format that combineds both the formats strength instead.
this is just shiit! Yesterday, this site said a hybrid format had been agreed between the two. Now we find out that Toshiba still wants a unified format? Post credible news...
There is no reason to buy HD DVD or Blu Ray right now b/c neither will probably be the format and I have over 150 dvd's as it is!! Anyone buying either player is retarded!
