RE5 may not be scary but at least its fun, unlike its predecessors

This article tackles the debate about current Resident Evil titles being too action oriented and not scary enough. Talks about the original games featuring numerous problems that had to fixed and how scare factor had to be traded in so that the franchise could actually be fun.

Yeah seriously, this guy is a genius, he's writing what we've all been thinking for years. The others were horrible, not fun at all. No one even bought those stupid games. They only achieved Greatest Hits status out of pity. Pssht, Resident Evil, LAME!

Do I really have to add a sarcasm tag to that?

Really scraping the bottom of the opinion barrel over there at the Examiner.

Rikitatsu5902d ago

Did he just say RE5 is more fun that RE4 and RE code vernoica etc..?!

Seriously >_>
Its about time N4G created a blacklist for horrible websites like these.

CaseyRyback_CPO5902d ago (Edited 5902d ago )

Reason #3423523923949 this generation of gaming truly blows. Innovation is feared, monotony and simplifying is praised.

RE is one of the best most memorable games I've ever played in my life.

Do us all a big favor and die, Examiner. I'm not even gonna waste my time reading this garbage. The title itself is bullshit enough.

Bnet3435902d ago

Resident Evil games aren't suppose to be fun, they're suppose to be scary. I'm not knocking RE4 and RE5, but old style RE is way better and I hope RE returns to it's roots for RE6. I know many RE fans would agree. Same thing for Silent Hill. That series has also gone through some rough changes. Horror games need to make a comeback. I'm pulling for RE6 to be an RE2-esque game.

Kleptic5902d ago

Casey...I fully agree...

for a little while lately i've been thinking it was just me...i've played every 'AAA' game of this generation so far at one point or another...and I simply can't help but feel that if anything...this generation, and mostly its media, seem to celebrate mediocrity on a scale that i simply never realized...

I was just a kid when the PS1 popped...but look back at that generation and compare it to now...the entire notion of 3 dimensional gaming was just getting started...new IPs where a dime a dozen...the industry was fearless...hundreds of titles from every genre that tried nearly EVERYTHING different from one another...some where hits...some ended up being regarded as the greatest games of all time...

yet this generation seems to be a shat throwing contest with simply no end in sight...the Wii is this break through console in terms of the idea of how you play games...and pretty much no one has even had the balls to really ring it out...i'm by no means a wii supporter...but i respect nintendo at least in terms of having a vision to offer something different...even if they did it then fell back on ancient franchises to try to ride it out...

but companies like SE, Capcom, EA, and Ubisoft...all huge publishers that got to where they are by offering some of the most competent games ever created at one point or another...yet this generation is filled with shovelware that no one should really care about...Re5 is 'fun'?...RE5 is RE4...with some girl standing next to you...its not scary...its only fun if you liked Re4...and is nothing CLOSE to what was once the pinnacle of horror based gaming...EA pumps out annual sequels to stuff that we used to care about...yet still makes a killing doing it...

and then there is SE...you could sum up this entire generation of misshaps so far on them...an absolute fear of risk...taking the 'easy' route in every conceivable way...and producing stuff that is worse than even a third rate japanese publisher like THQ or Tecmo...while FFXIII does look amazing so far...the game is not out yet, and little is still known about it...

while there have been some great games this generation...MGS4 might be the ony one so far that I would guarantee i'll remember 20 years from now...GTAIV was a bust in that sense...killzone 2 is great, but I know already it simply doesn't have the legs to last the rest of this year in terms of popularity...people dislike what it does differently for the most part...

this industry is losing touch with what once made it the best form of entertainment imo...now we get one game that becomes popular...and 500 copies of it trying to make some quick money...

I hope Heavy Rain, Alan Wake, and a few other oddballs become INSANELY well recieved...as those are the only real games on the horizon that are in a position to really push gaming forward...imo at least...

jadenkorri5902d ago

RE has always been a horror game, the storys of each one up until 3 were told well and done well, i think once the games left raccoon city, i literally stopped being interested... If you want to play a shooter, stick with cod/kz/halo...

vickers5005902d ago (Edited 5902d ago )

Stand back everybody!

Alex_Mexico5902d ago

Well, Im one of those "infidels" that didnt really started playing the RE games until RE4, which I absolutely adored and loved.
I tried more than once with the REmake for GC and even bought RE Code Veronica X for my PS2 and ended up trading it 'cause I hated it.
I hated the camera angles, hated the backtracking, hated the controls, hated the ink ribbons, hated the super limited inventory and hated the limited ammo.
Fell in love with RE4 and RE5 too of course.

This is all just an opinion though. Im not saying RE1, 2, 3 and CV were bad, just not of my taste.

Danja5902d ago

RE:2
RE:3
RE:4
RE: Code Veronica

what is he smoking,...

RE:5 is fun but it's not a horror game ne more , it was so short unlike RE:4 which totally just captured me away from the world...

RE:5 is about having fun killing zombies with a friend.... and pretty character animations....

SL1M DADDY5901d ago

Sorry, but for giggles I popped in RE ont he GameCube, you know, the remake of RE for the PSone. Let me tell you, that game is genius. It makes you think about every move you make since you only get a handful of shells and very few inventory slots. It makes you worry about a single zombie rather than running into a room full of them and gunning them all down with the plethora of weapons at your disposal as in RE5. It is a true to life Survival Horror game and though I know many would debate that Survival Horror is even a genre... I say it is and love the old RE's far better than RE5.

NarutoSoul5901d ago (Edited 5901d ago )

Fun for me=A tense experience, where I hope that there isn't a zombie around that corner because I don't know if I have the ammo to take it down.

Not fun for me=Killing African nonzombies with a mentally challenged, barely-black-but-just-black-en ough-to-possibly-shut-up-the-pe ople-going-boo-racism sidekick, where I can't even walk while shooting or even when performing a melee attack... Seriously, WTF?

At this point, I'm done with the RE franchise until zombies come back into the spotlight.

rockleex5901d ago

Silent Hill 1 was even better.

I had TONS of fun playing them!! >:D

Guess what... the RE5 demo was SO boring I didn't even bother picking up the full game. Also, I tried the first level of RE4 and threw it away. -_-"

Towards the last paragraph it starts making sense ...but i dont agree with him explaining, why this was way better then the others :

"Since RE4, many have been angry, complaining that the Resident Evil series simply isn't scary anymore. In both the 4th and 5th games in the series, we see protagonists carrying super weaponry that you always have ammo for, which allows players to just blast your way through the game like a super action star and that is not "survival horror". These statements are absolutely right. However, in these most recent two titles, the gameplay is actually fun unlike the originals."

I really enjoyed part 5 though.

:)

erathaol5902d ago

What's more fun than having a Tommy Gun w/Infinite Ammo, Shooting hordes of enemies and giant monsters, Solving a few puzzles, Rescueing the Presidents Daughter and all while wearing awesome stylish Mafioso Suit.

Bathyj5902d ago

Part 2 is still the best for me for some reason. Crappy controls and all, but at least they suited the pace of the game.

Oh, and I seem to remember while playing it, I had FUN.

Kleptic5902d ago (Edited 5902d ago )

both 1 and 2 are a pair of my all time favorite video games...2 made the adjustments in the right area (particularly writing) to keep it fresh even after we had played the crap out of the first one...

I get messed up this generation because of online gaming...I didn't put much time on consoles last generation because it felt a lot like the generation before it...some great games yes...but nothing like RE1, or FFVII, or MGS that had my jaw on the floor nearly the entire time I was playing them...

I want to be back where there is a point that I am playing a game and finish it...and then desperately wish I hadn't played it yet...just to experience it again...online gaming doesn't really do that for me...its a great time killer and is fun...but can't compare to what happens when I play a truely ground breaking single player game...

I should note...MGS4 did exactly that...it was the first game in nearly 10 years that I wish I haven't played yet...that I get jealous of friends that say they have not played it...

MGS4, RE1, FFVII, Super Metroid (SNES I know, but still one of my favorites for these reasons)and a few others are like the Se7en of video games...or the usual suspects...or Pulp Fiction...films I purposely don't watch for years on end, so I can pretend I haven't seen them yet when I finally do watch them again...

BYE5902d ago (Edited 5902d ago )

Crappy controls? They were great once you get used to them. Takes about 5 min to learn and you're good to go.

I don't know what it is with all the complaining about controls this generation, seems like people want the same controls in every game.

Kleptic5902d ago (Edited 5902d ago )

I don't complain about 'crappy controls' (by the way he was speaking of the original RE games)...I do complain though when a developer forces a shatty scheme on us, and try to treat us like idiots...that is by saying 'it makes it scarier having the game control this way'...wrong...it makes it not fun...big difference...

you're telling me you didn't mind seeing chris walking around with his gun up in cut scenes...seeing him move and work around the environment in a realistic way...a way a real person would when faced with an army of stupid zombie squid things?...then capcom gives you control and you are stuck with ridiculous mechanics because the game's AI is so weak it simply wouldn't work if you had better control?...I sure didn't...but I guess that is just one of the reasons I don't own the game...If you could function like a human being in RE5, that is strafe a slow moving enemy hobbling towards you...the game would be the easiest title ever created...in every sense of the phrase...that is the 'easy way out' on capcom's part...

Bathyj5902d ago

Well said Kleptic. You have good taste in games (and movies too).

I also lament what is happening to single player games. They seem to be being shoved aside for more online which to me 90% is basically some sort of variation of Deathmatching. Its pretty dull to me.

Its sad because I believe the biggest area where games can improve is the AI, but online MP games dont focus on this. Rarely are there bots and even if there are I dont just mean AI trying to shoot you but interact in more meaningful ways. Hopefully Heavy Rain might be a game to advance this area.

And Ceekay, yeah, you totally misread me, but since you brought it up, RE5's controls do suck. Hey I would happily put up with them if the game was still a survival horror. If they didn't want us to want shooter controls, they shouldn't have turned the game into a shooter.

Its like a kid enjoying his 50cc Go-kart racing with his friends and then he suddenly gets thrown into the 150cc class with older kids and cant keep up. All of a sudden, what he was happy with before, seems inadequite now and hence, not as much fun.

Ex-Naughty Dog Dev Says Resident Evil 4 Inspired Uncharted and Many More Action Games

Former Naughty Dog dev says Resident Evil 4 inspired Unchartted and even Gears of War, particularly the over-the-shoulder camera view.

CrimsonWing6932d ago

It revolutionized third-person shooters, in a genius way that gives you full control of aiming.

CrimsonWing6931d ago

No, I mean RE4. Like the whole snap to over-shoulder and precision aiming was what I meant.

I won’t deny Winback does pave the way in some respect. But it’s not the same at all.

InUrFoxHole32d ago

Both are great series. That's awesome

Samonuske32d ago

I thought this was common knowledge. Resident Evil Revolutionised over the shoulder aiming in 3rd person shooters/action games

italiangamer31d ago (Edited 31d ago )

Influenced basically every third person action game made after it, GTA uses the over the shoulder perspective when shooting since the 4th installment, Red Dead Redemption 1 & 2 too and the Batman Arkham series has the over the shoulder perspective as the main camera throughout the whole game series.
Obviously there are a ton more examples but you get the point 🗿.

Simon's Quest is better than Symphony.

If you're gonna troll, at least make a legitimate attempt.

Levii_9240d ago

Hot damn that's a good list. The only one i never played is AOE2 and i never finshed Chrono Trigger but it was damn good.

Speaking of what's old but holds up amazingly well and plays like a dream.. i played Symphony of the Night for the first time in 2019.. yep that's right. It became one of my favourite games of all time that i replay almost every year. I couldn't believe how good it was. That is almost impossible for me with newer games let alone older ones. Truly a special gem.

LG_Fox_Brazil40d ago

That's a pretty fucking great list

__y2jb40d ago (Edited 40d ago )

The only one I’d disagree with is doom. It shows its age badly I think. After 5 minutes of play these days you put it down.
