EDGE: PSP Narrowly outsells DSi in Japan

PSP outsold DSi by just 213 units in Japan to narrowly top the hardware chart for the week ended April 12.

Meanwhile, PS3 continued its momentum built through March - when it was the country's top-selling home console – to again outsell its rivals.

Weekly sales were down across the board excluding those of Xbox 360, which rose by more than 2,000 units.

Were DS Lite sales factored into the equation then Nintendo sold the most portable systems during the week in question, but Sony can nevertheless feel happy about its performance in Japan after its relatively poor March hardware sales figures Stateside.

Here's the full weekly sales rundown, after the link..

considering the psp is something like five years old.

Trollimite5574d ago

no handheld console ever went head to head with a nintendo haldheld. i find that amazing

raztad5574d ago

but being five years old is still the most powerful spec-wise portable in the market, and the game library appeals to mature gamers. PSP is on a roll in japan.

njr5574d ago

Well, 4 years to be exact. Can't believe its been around for most of my high school years.

SpoonyRedMage5574d ago

Hmm, the DS is the same age(or older). They're both on their third model.

SoapShoes5574d ago

Ever since Monster Hunter PSP has been on top most of the time. DSI surged over PSP for awhile since it was a new model, but PSP was still nipping at its heels and now it's back on top. This is why PSP has been getting so much 3rd party support in Japan.

10 years lifespan
that's great!!!

lordgodalming5574d ago (Edited 5574d ago )

No, I'm pretty sure I've read that the PSP is a total failure. The interwebz don't lie.

(waits for disagrees from failed sarcasm detectors)

@below: lol thanks! +bub

with you because you would have looked stupid if no one did, but don't worry i gave you bubbles.

Arsenal4Ever5574d ago

So Basically the DS still is the top selling console this week. I don't understand why they split up the sales, seems stupid. PS3 seems to me locked in that 15 - 20 k range, well there is ACC coming up, PS3 might get a tiny boost.

SpoonyRedMage5574d ago

I don't get it either. It's still a DS. I'm glad the NPD aren't doing it.

Jonray5574d ago

has been in japan for a few months before us.. its amazing it stills sells as high.

mirroredderorrim5574d ago

Apple should have targeted Japan, fiercely, with the Ipod touch/Iphone.

Sony is going to take care what Apple could have gotten away with, imho, despite being an American company; Japanese, especially younger demographics; like Apple products.

The only problem with Apple products?
You guessed it! More expensive than Sony products, on a usual basis.

I'm mentioning this because the PSP2 is imminent and could lay to rest, those articles that claim Iphone/Ipod touch are competition to the DSI/PSP/PSP2

I wonder if Sony will support PSP/PSP2 with hybrid titles that work on both systems?
Of B.C can spill unto the PSP2 from the PSP, or some kind of PSP trade-in program...?

Ugh, sorry... just my wishfulthinkingmode turning on by itself.

Debunked: Blowing On Nintendo Game Cartridges Never Worked

We have all been there! Blowing on a Nintendo video game cartridge when the game we were playing just would not launch or appeared to be glitching.

I mean it worked for me. Regardless if it was just a poor connection between the cartridge and the console or some random bug that was preventing the game from loading properly, the placebo effect of knowing your breath is what fixed the game is dead set in the minds of plenty of 80s gamers.

wesnytsfs3d ago

Blow on the game and then use something about hte thickness of a deck of cards in my case it a was plastic sport card holder of about 20 cards that would keep the mechnaism all the eway down. Ahh and the famous left to right shuffle hoping the contact would touch.

Stupid Zoomer tries to debunk a technique used successfully by millions of people over many years.

Look out for they/them’s next article ‘DEBUNKED! Why the Xbox 360 towel trick is all a myth’.

Cacabunga3d ago

It did work, not only Nintendo but sega genesis and saturn as well

Seraphim2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

I mean, sure it worked, but did it work every single time? If the answer is yes then you were probably just lucky, or more likely, not remembering correctly. Regardless, it did work be that luck or scientific reasons.

thorstein4d ago

Clearing the dust from inside the cartridge by blowing on it did work.

Perhaps YOU are unfamiliar with how easily dust can disrupt electronics, but entire generations of gamers and computer users are.

DodoDojo3d ago

Yup. The pins would get dirty and dusty, anyone that's cleaned a game with a q tip knows that. Blowing the cartridge out would had have to helped.

Relientk774d ago

It worked for me and my cartridges. So I refuse to believe it's just a myth
