Sony Finally Focusing On PS3 Software

We all know that Sony wanted to make the PS3 a multimedia console that can be used for different entertainment purposes, but at the same time, they wanted to emphasize that it's still a gaming system. Well, it was difficult to agree with that last part in the first few years of the console's existence.

...Weren't they always focusing on software???

But then again...I need a plan for buying all of these games that are coming out.

NGS2, Uncharted 2, God of War III, Gran Turismo 5 (loved prologue)...I mean sheesh.

I'm happy either way Sony. Bring them on!

Exactly what I came here to say. People are living fantasies. What do they think, all these games coming this year just got concieved and developed in the last month? Killer software has ALWAYS been their focus. For example, inFamous has been in development for 4 years!

Sony has just been putting all of their money and resources into 1st/2nd party development, and the fruits of that labor are starting to show. They have about 3 times as many 1st party studios than either of their competitors, and I think you'll see that it only gets better from here.

Just putting this out here:

If Sony is "finally focusing on PS3 software" after all these years, what is Microsoft doing with the 360? It seems that most of the recent 360 developments are for things that AREN'T game related (new Avatars and menu, Netflix deal).

Now, are we going to go as far to say "Microsoft ISN'T focusing on software!!! OMG!!!"?

pretty sure sony had better software for 08, and not even gonna argue 09

This has got to be written by the same guy who keeps saying he only uses his PS3 to play Bluray movies.

I reported this junk as lame. I bought my PS3 early 07 and I have had PLENTY of games to play since then.

PS3 was initiallys billed as the supercomputer media hub in your home. Sony wouldn't even call it a game console.

Kutaragi: "No game machines are comparable to the PS3, which is neither a genuine game console, home electronics [product] nor a personal computer. It's a new kind of product"

Kutaragi (sigh again): "We don't say it's a game console (*laugh*) - PlayStation 3 is clearly a computer, unlike the PlayStations [released] so far."

I personally like the latter. Here is another one from Phil Harrison:

Phil Harrison: "The PlayStation 3 is a computer. We do not need the PC."

It is also undeniable that early in the PS3's life, it was billed as "the" blu-ray player and competed with most stand-alone players. Heck, even blu-ray promotions were you get 5 free blu-rays were extended to the PS3.

Now I don't argue with Sony's lineup (as I'm not sure how many of those are making the cut this year), but it sure sounds like they marketed it as something else than just a gaming console.

I kind of resign to the fact that I cant buy all cool PS3 games... lol I dont have the money or the time to play all the games that are coming this year I will only buy the ones that I really really want.

Hmmm.... In about a year and a half (from summer 07 to winter 08/09) Sony released: Heavenly Sword, Warhawk, the Eye of Judgment, Ratchet & Clank Future, Folklore, Uncharted, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, Hot Shots Golf Out of Bounds, MLB The Show (08 and 09), LittleBigPlanet, Resistance 2, Killzone 2. . . That doesn't include a single downloadable game, which they've also put lots of focus into. They've had a good first-party publishing record on the PS3 for a while now. They seem to be amping it up even more now, but that doesn't mean it wasn't already pretty focused and well-done.

You want to know why they were talking about the other features of the PS3 and not the fact that it played games? Because for the preceding decade, console gaming has been known by one name: PlayStation. Everyone already knew the PS3 played games, because it's a PlayStation. However, when you're launching @ a $600 price point, the obvious question is, "What makes this thing so expensive? Why's it worth that much?" Sony was answering that question.

Ratchet and Clank, Heavenly Sword, Uncharted along with multi-plats is when PS3 started focusing on software, not 2009! Throw in NGS during summer 2007.

I mean haven't they always been focused on the software? we know the ps3 didn't only had 19 games at launch. but the xbox 360 wasn't bless with ton load of games at launch either. the thing here is the ps3 had more games in its second year than the 360 did in its second year of life in the market. its a good read but the facts are a bit miss represented.. I'd more likely to believe that the 3rd party are finally focusing on software for ps3. as they are now looking identical to even better on the ps3.. sony has been focused on the ps3 software. that's why we have games like uncharted and kz2 and resistance and lbp.

ActionBastard3494d ago

I must have imagined all the games I've played from launch to now.

bob saget remix3494d ago
