Sony forecast to blast rivals away with the launch of PS3

Sony is expected to sell up to 1.5 million of its PlayStation 3 consoles in Britain this year, putting it on track to outstrip Nintendo's cheaper Wii within 12 to 18 months of its launch.

The consumer electronics giant has made 220,000 of the £425 consoles available for the UK launch on Friday, a figure so large that retailers are reporting none of the supply problems that have plagued rival launches.

However, analysts and retailers have warned against interpreting the absence of a stock squeeze as a negative sign.

Nick Parker, an analyst with Screen Digest, said: "The lack of shortage is supply driven; what Sony has shipped will sell. We estimate that Sony will sell around 4 million units in Europe this year, with 1 to 1.5 million in the UK".

The specialist firm believes that Sony's PlayStation 3 could overtake the Wii – a device aimed at a predominately young audience – during 2008, and possibly towards the end of the year, with Microsoft's Xbox 360 likely to follow. This is despite the high price of the PlayStation 3 compared with the £180 Wii or £265 Xbox 360.

According to retailers, when Microsoft launched the Xbox 360 in 2005, about 70,000 units were available in the UK, while the first day stock of the Nintendo Wii last autumn amounted to 105,000. Both launches were accompanied by stock shortages.

A spokesman for Woolworths said of the PlayStation 3: "This is the first console launch for years where we anticipate that we will be able to have consoles available at the day of launch in every single Woolworths store".

Why would they sell so much more in Europe than everywhere else? They've given no reason other than "hope". Ship 20 billion PS3s over there, you're not necessarily going to sell them all. If I lived in Europe I wouldnt be happy they're finally arriving, I'd be pissed it took so long.

Look at PS2 sales, even before the price drop. EU buys PS anything, they just eat it up. In fact, they're the reason PS2 has over 110 million units out. Looking at the sales you'll see the rival US + JP sales combined.

the PS3 will do any better in Eurpoe than the US? The best they will do is second place in Japan, and third place in every other territory. No one stays at the top forever, but let's see how long MS can stay up there!

This is what all the FUD marketing from M$ and the negative spinsters have been afraid of. Despite heavy criticism and blatant paid off bias in the gaming press, the PS3 will do just fine.
It's going to be a great year for gaming!

Everybody is assuming that people are rich or have that much money to spare. Sure the will sell 1 million maybe even two, Europe does love Sony. There is a tipping point though, most people ie. casual gamers will not buy a system for that price. Who are these analyst expecting to buy this console. The working mother and father with 2 or 3 kids is more worried about clothes and food for their kids than a video game system. And lastly do these people take in account that none of these systems really sell like crazy until the price drops under ($200)US. I mean great it will sell in Europe just don't compare it with a ps2 that started at half the price.

The ps2 launched at £300 not £212.50

Funny the US price was $300 - UK got ripped off more last time.
