Most Memorable PS2 RPG

Andrew Weymes of The Nightly Gamer writes: "The Playstation 2 is the ultimate console for JRPGs. If you're the type of gamer that enjoys levelling up, an emphasis on storytelling and a naive, young male protagonist then you have probably owned a Playstation 2 at one point. There are innumerable amounts of JRPGs on the beloved Sony console but some are more memorable than others. Being memorable doesn't necessarily mean that it's the best. It simply means that the storyline, characters and gameplay managed to secure a place in the hearts of those that played it."

you took the words right out of my mouth. Grandia 2 and Altier Iris are second. Summoner 3rd. Im sure there are more I just cant think of none right now.

Yep Final Fantasy X, pity it was the last great RPG from Squaresoft :(

MrWeymes3495d ago (Edited 3495d ago )

I enjoyed Final Fantasy X when I played it but it's the least memorable of the past five Final Fantasy games in my opinion. I liked the gameplay of X more than XII, but I prefered the characters of XII. It's a toss up as to which one is better.

In terms of memorability in the past five Final Fantasies, it goes

1. Final Fantasy IX
2. Final Fantasy VII
3. Final Fantasy VIII
4. Final Fantasy X
5. Final Fantasy XI

in my opinon.

I expect Final Fantasy XIII to be absolutely amazing. I hope it reinstills the lost faith in Square Enix. Star Ocean: The Last Hope was enough to make me hopeful for their future.

iamtehpwn3495d ago

Is indeed the last great SquareSoft game. Now we have this "Square Enix" bull.

Don't believe Square Enix made Squaresoft suck? Look up a title known as "Final Fantasy X-2", the first major final fantasy produce under infamous Square Enix.

RIP Squaresoft/Playstation Hirnobou Sakuguchi games

MrWeymes3495d ago

While I admit that Final Fantasy X-2 wasn't great, it was a decent entry in the series. I have faith that Final Fantasy XIII will be at worse a good JRPG with an exciting battle system.

I'm amazed at the overwhelming love of Final Fantasy X here. I must have missed something. I thought it was a great game, but even back when it was first released, I found Tidus and Walka incredibly annoying. I had to think for five minutes to remember the main villains name. That's how I know it didn't have much of an effect on me.

Marceles3495d ago (Edited 3495d ago )

..FFX is still the most memorable PS2 RPG to me:). I would put Kingdom Hearts over FFX if I wasn't into traditional RPGs I guess.

9 was probably the least memorable to me out of your list other than 11.

Edit: lol @ the main villain, it took me awhile to think of Kingdom Hearts's main villain too. Ansem and Yu Yevon both don't stand out too much, but then again they both don't make much of an appearance in the games. Yu Yevon for a good reason though since the story mostly concentrated on Sin so much that you totally forget about Yu Yevon. Ansem well...he was just the typical. Memorable yes, but not much to him.

Marcello3495d ago

Well you can expect all you want but it wont make FFXIII anybeter infact it will prob just make the dissapointment even greater, the fact is Square-Enix track record is awful & so from that i am not expecting anything great, i truly hope i am wrong, it may look great but will it play great thats wat at the end of the day really matters.

You know it makes me shake my head in disbelief that there are ppl out there who disagree with fact. Final Fantasy X was the last great RPG from SquareSOFT that is fact not an opinion that you can disagree with.

Hip Hop Shamer3495d ago

one of the best rpgs ever!! XD

pippoppow3495d ago (Edited 3495d ago )

Heard Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne was really good which I just picked up. Also heard on of the Shadow Hearts games are supposed to be good as well, which I may pick up.

I thought Kingdom Hearts was ok but Dark Cloud 2 is my absolute favorite RPG on the PS2

MrWeymes3495d ago

I think Dark Cloud 2 is a much deeper RPG. You're likely to spend more time with a game like that, however in terms of storytelling and memorable characters, it doesn't compete with Kingdom Hearts 1 or 2 in my opinion.

GWAVE3495d ago

Nice thing about the PS2 is that it had literally EVERYTHING, especially for the RPG gamer.

A huge Squaresoft/Square-Enix fan? No problem. Kingdom Hearts, FFX-XII, Front Mission 4, Valkyrie Profile, etc to suit your tastes.

Don't care for S-E so much? No big deal. Dragon Quest VIII, the "Tales of..." games, Shadow Hearts, Dark Cloud, Suikoden III-V (plus Tactics), and Rogue Galaxy (and many, many more titles) are there for you.

A huge SRPG fan? Nippon Ichi and ATLUS are there to save the day. Disgaea, Soul Nomad, Growlancer, Stella Deus, La Pucelle, Phantom Brave...the list goes on.

And of course, there's a huge library of Shin Megami Tensei games to enjoy.

TheColbertinator3495d ago (Edited 3495d ago )

.Hack,Xenosaga,Radiata Stories,Grandia and Star Ocean 3 as well

MrWeymes3495d ago

I can't believe I forgot to mention Dragon Quest VIII in the article. It's not the most memorable but it should have got a mention. I certainly remember Jessica's big, round friends.

TheColbertinator3495d ago

Hahaha Weymes,is that all you think about?

heyheyhey3495d ago

Suikoden was the best SRPG

MrWeymes3495d ago

I wouldn't say that large breasts are all I think about it, but I certainly think about them throughout the day. Just the other day, I went on a rant about hating waterbras because it's like a man stuffing his pants. It's silly and misleading.

Obama3495d ago

I agree with heyheyhey that suikoden series is the best, esp 2 and 5.

Final Fantasy X.. no doubt

but i also loved Dragon Quest 8

dude... Jessica was HOT!!!

the game was really good, i loved the alchemy, the monster battles and the story... it was lengthy and there were tons of brilliant side quests!

but Final Fantasy X is the best JRPG EVAR!!!

MrWeymes3495d ago

I liked Dragon Quest VIII but it didn't enamour me as it did to many others. I enjoyed Jessica's massive, rotund friends, though.

Obama3495d ago

I like X better than XII, nonetheless both are good games.
