TGR Editorial: Why Isn't Killzone 2 Selling?

I don't know about other regions but marketing for Killzone 2 was VERY poor. The advert for US was very dull and there was no gamestop promotion. The best they could come up with was pre order and get demo. SF4, Halo wars and RE5 all had excellent promotion at gamestop.

The author that wrote this has no proof whatsoever that Killzone 2 isn't selling. The only thing there is is just 2 days worth of sales from February's NPD. There's no Official European numbers whatsoever.

Just because Sony hasn't said anything about how well it's sold so far doesn't mean it's not selling, and It's a shame that this generation of gaming has revolved so much around the Sales of games rather than more about Games themselves. Until this generation of gaming I didn't know how well ANY game was selling and didn't care.

Even with all of the issues that Killzone 1 had, it went on to sell over 2 million copies, and regardless how high or low the initial Killzone 2 sales numbers are, I see no reason why Killzone 2 won't be able to double Killzone 1's lifetime sales numbers, and be at around 3.5-4 million by the end of this year.

I'm not worried about how well KZ2 is selling, my focus is on all these great exclusives coming to the PS3. If anyone else wants to argue over sales numbers, then go right ahead.

I have a couple things to say about this.

Why do fanpeople get to speak for the PS3 community?

I never expected KZ2 to break any sales record. I never expected a Halo killer (don't even know what that is supposed to be). What I did expect was a can't miss FPS for my console and I got exactly what I hoped for.

What kind of brain dead idiot would actually think a sequel to a mediocre FPS on a playstation console would be the greatest sales blockbuster this gen? I mean PS consoles aren't even known for FPS.

Simple. People who bought the 360 bought it for games like Halo and GoW.

Same can't be said for Killzone 2 and the PS3. The gaming demographic on the PS3 is easily the most diverse amongst the current next-gen consoles.

That being said, I'm sure that Sony is happy with a bunch of pretty-good selling 1st party games, rather than 1 or 2 mega-sellers.

People blame Sony for not advertising, but if you're watching baseball at all, you'll see MLB '09 commercials on every other inning.

Now people may ask why MLB '09 is being advertised and not Killzone 2.

Well, that goes back to what I've always thought---there are so many PS3 games to advertise...and in my opinion too many. Which ones should Sony pick?

Why is the average joe so considered with sales, first it doesn't benefit me at all other than it might go on greatest hits sooner. UNTIL i see money coming into my pocket because of how well it sold is when I will give a F, though i do get happy for the studios that are selling their product in buttloads.

Selling a lot does not make a game good, it doesn't get more good( :D ) the more it sells, its the same quality when it comes out to when it sells millions. Just some games are more mainstream than others, I mean how much did halflife sell the first few months? years? I don't know honestly Im asking you. I guessing not crazy numbers but anyways if you like a game thats all that matters.

Personally so far I'm getting motion sickness from playing the game so I haven't even played it but maybe a hour at the most.

So what does it show you? That XBox owners prefer shooters?
I only own a PS3, and my friends as well, and I must say not everyone likes the same things. Some love shooters, others more platform games, other action,adventure,horror, and so forth. The thing is, because during the PS2 there where so many diversified games, every one could pick up a game by the genre he likes. You could not say that the PS2 is for example an racing games console.
On the other hand the XBox, was known more for shooters, and those that loved the shooting genre bought an XBox.
So on to the next gen consoles, it is basically the same thing (same kind of people).
You will never see a shooter, or any other genre sell really like crazy, on the PS3. There are many games that sold very well (at least over a million), like MGS, Ratchet, LBP, Uncharted, Resistance 2,....Every one of those games sold very well, no one sold crazy numbers the first days, because not everyone likes those genres;but they do tend to continue selling (not all sales are made the first week).
Coming back to my friends, believe it or not, some didn't by KZ2, others never heard of Uncharted, others did not by MGS (I know that's just crazy, I tried to tell them, but they don't really care lol), some of them would never consider buying Ratchet or LBP (in their eyes, these games are for kids or teenagers); I bought all of those games, but some of my friends didn't, even though the games are great.
The funny thing is that all my friends like sports games (fifa, nba, ...) but I don't like it, and have never bought one lol.
What I'm trying to say is that whoever tried to say that KZ2 would sell millions the first day, was just a stupid guy with no grasp of reality.

I played the demo many times but never felt wrong with the controls and then I bought KZ2 and then updated it to the latest version and it's simply the best FPS I've ever played hands down! albeit not playing that many FPS but I've played the like of Halo, Crysis and CoD2 on PC, CoD4, HL2, R:FoM & R2 but still KZ2 has the best experience so far! the onlime MP is among the best I've ever had and I think many will agree - not because of hype, but because it's actually really really GOOD! I have BOTH systems and can say this with no BIAS. Killzone 2 is one of the most amazing games I have ever played. I have finished it twice now and still want more. I sometimes stop and look up at the sky and gasp at the detail, sound, lighting etc that this game presents.

It won't change the fact that I'd be wrong. Just like this article isn't based in reality. The media was the one hyping up this game, not PS3 fans. Go back and have a look through the forums. Sure, PS3 fans were excited about this game but only the most isolated fanboys claimed it would spell the end of the 360. Strike one against this article.

Strike 2 was claiming that Killzone 2 was supposed to be a Halo 3 equivalent. No one has ever claimed that. Killzone is great game, arguably even better than Halo 3 but no one claimed it would outdo Halo 3 in sales.

Strike 3 is, of course, this game is selling great! Over one million sold in less than a month? That's an extremely rare feat for any game.

And what do they blame for this make believe problem? Why, Sony marketing, of course! Look...just because there weren't Killzone flavored slurpees and Helgast Breast Pumps like we saw with Halo 3 marketing doesn't mean Sony wasn't doing anything. I saw tonnes of ads in Canada, on TV, in magazines, on buses, etc..etc. Some city in Ontario actually pulled all the Killzone posters from bus stops because some kids found them too scary and parents complained. This articles fails in everything it attempts to do.

It's like LittleBigPlanet all over again. Everyone was falling over themselves to explain how LBP was a flop and it's at what now? 2 million, probably hitting 3 or 4 million before it's all over?
Where are the articles examining why Banjo Kazooie didn't sell? Or why Halo Wars has only just now hit 1 million? Or what's happening to Star Ocean. What's with the double standard?

Ive seen the MLB The Show 09 commercial with Dustin Pedroya 472 times. That ones actually decent, kinda funny. The same, lame Kz2 commercial comes on in the middle of the night and they dont sponsor ANYTHING with the KZ name. Halo was on everything from soda bottles to sporting events to a commercial spot every 5 minutes on every single channel. My grandma could tell you what halo is by now. Kz2 is pretty much the best game I've ever played (Favorite genre = FPS) but it needs the marketing to show that. Especially here in the US.

thats a little hypocritical when its common sense. more advertising will get your name out there more. sony has a lot of pride, same reason they wont pay for exclusives (like MS does), or make hardware easy to develop for. sony themselves said way back when for the ps2 that they want developers to learn their hardware and not the other way around. while i agree with this part, let new tech pave the way and let the developers learn to make better games with new hardware, i dont agree with not marketing one of the biggest games this generation simply because the sony name is so popular. What little number data we have on the game suggests great sales. Take a look at this. We have two days of sales and even that came in at 300K. Extrapolate that to a month (300K x 14 (28/2 or days left in a month/2 days) and you get over 4 million. Obviously sales won't stay the same for the month but even at a 1/4 of that it's over 1 million in a month. I wouldn't call that bad sales. Even at 1/8 of the original two days sales continuing, that's 500K a month. That is not a bad figure at all.

If you can find me 1 game in the history of the universe that has kept the same sales rate it had in it's first two day for an entire month then that's a valid point. But that's absolutely not how it works. Generally speaking games sell nearly half their volume in the first week, unless it's released in the Xmas season.

So no you can't make that assumption. All we have to go on are the charts and KZ2 is NOT performing admirably.

Which is why you look at lesser sales, which is why I gave ya. No one expects the game to continue the first two days sales forever or for any period of time. So what I showed was even at 1/4 of that (more realistic) or even 1/8 of that (even more realistic) the game still sells 500K in a month. That would be a million in 2 months. That is not bad.

I do agree with predator, it's not a bad game (I own it and honestly I'm not that into it) but Sony's marketing team is not good at their jobs. And by the way, by the charts as you said, KZ2 sold 300K in 2 days. That's 1/3 of a million in 2 days in case you need more concrete numbers.

Estranged, you can't compare KZ2 to LBP. Those are two completely different types of games and I believe will cater to different set of comsumers. KZ2 is suppose to be THE FPS compared to all other shooters on any console. I know people don't like to compare the sales to Halo 3 and Gears, but you have to. Nothing I have said is as ridiculous as was in the article/comments around here. Yeah LBP is completely different, but I see Killzone having legs just like several other games have had legs. Resistance 2 didn't do stellar, but it has kept selling and done pretty well for itself.

Frankly this is all the haters can come up with. They wanted so badly for it to fail so they could say that it sucked and they couldn't. They wanted so badly for people to dislike the game so they could say it's "the most traded in game ever" and they couldn't. The problem is that sony fans always boast their exclusives selling an insane amount of copies. Reality check time. The game was way over rated. The game had zero personality and plays exactly the same like every other shooter on the market. I know a few of my coworkers that returned it and went back to COD4. In my group, no one but myself has bought Killzone 2. They're all curious about it but most of them are 30 something and have lives. They're working through all the games they got at Christmas still. I see a lot of Fallout 3 being played, CoD: WAW, Rock Band 2, LittleBigPlanet and the odd Mirror's Edge.

Games don't move on the PS3 like they do on the 360, I thought that would be obvious by now. The 360 faithful bought their 360's for Halo/Gears types of games. They lineup to get these games. PS3 owners are far more varied which is why a game like LBP can do well when Rare is left wondering WTF at Banjo sales. The fact that Killzone 2 has already crossed the 1 million mark is amazing, and it'll probably sell 3-4 million before it's done.

Have a look back at previous posts. How many posts can you find of so called Sony fans claiming massive KZ2 sales? Find any?
No, contrast that with articles about Halo Wars. How many fans do you see there falling all over themselves saying Halo Wars was going to move 4 million plus?

What matters to me is that it's amazing game.

Just because people haven't seen Sony advertising, doesn't mean they weren't advertising. When the media has this annoying habit of instilling in the minds of the people that the PS3 has no games, it's hard for those same people to actually buy a game for the PS3.

Killzone 2 will be like Little Big Planet-it will sell well overtime.

First off KZ2 sold pretty well in the last 2 days is was released in February. Guerrilla Games never said it was competing with Halo, that was Fanboy speak.

Sony is all about variety. It isn't a shooter/FPS system like the 360. Not all PS3 owners are going to get this game because they all aren't into shooters.

Halo sells because you cant buy a bag of doritos without seeing Master Chiefs face on it. I'm not saying that Halo doesn't have a community that looks forward to a new Halo. Who owns a PS3 and doesn't know about Killzone 2? The PS3 is not at a mass market price, so advertising to the general public is pointless. This is a hardcore game on a hardcore console. It's marketed towards hardcore gamers. My mom doesn't care about it and doesn't need to see an ad while watching Judge Judy or General Hospital.

Killzone 2 has sold a million plus in less than a month. The franchise has had a very rough start, to assume millions of sales in a couple days is wishful thinking at best. Unless you know the actual develoment cost and how much Guerilla makes for every copy sold, you don't know if the game is a success. I can speculate it will have to move between 2 and 2.5 million units to start making a profit, but that is 100% guesswork. I don't think we have even seen a concrete number on the development cost.

If you enjoy the game, that should be all that matters to you. As a fan, the only time to worry about sales numbers is when you are looking for a sequel. Just ask any Shenmue fans if sales numbers are important to them. Either way, it's far too early to form any kind of an educated opinion on Killzone 2's success.

The PS3 owners are not FPS crazy either. That is why there is so much variety of AAA games. Uncharted, LBP, Killzone 2, GT5P(big demo), Heavenly Sword. All of them in different categories delivering the goods. I get a lot of entertainment from my PS3 with more variety. The PS3 is not defined by a specific genre, it is a variety driven console. First of all there are many factors:

- Killzone 2 didn't have marketing as good as Halo 3
- Killzone 2 followed Killzone which wasn't recieved making people think the sequel would be bad as well compared to halo 3 being followed by halo 2 and once GOTY Halo.

I think a big part of it is that the PS3 as a platform is not as FPS-geared.

The PS3 library has great diversity, but that splits the user base into lots of separate interests.

The Xbox community is huge on FPS games, and the 360 library caters to FPS gamers very nicely, thus ensuring FPS game successes and high sales.

When the PS3 builds a stronger FPS userbase, I think we'll see this level out.

One thing that could happen is a lot of 360 gamers will buy a PS3 when it's price drops, and a lot of those gamers are likely to make Killzone 2 their first purchase (as they damn well should!). So that kinda thing could still pave the way for sustained long term healthy sales fo rthe game, despite no explosive beginning.

the one thing that made playstation greater than all consoles in the past was not about one game (err.' halo) it was about a lot of games and other block busters that don't include 1st person shooters.

I remember I bought I bought my ps1 coz of brand names like GT, Final Fantasy & Metal gear, playstation has always made games for everyone not just 1st person fans.
a lot of people did not buy the ps3 for killzone, its just a nice game that was added to the playstation platinums and it sold well. If this game had been exclusive to the 360, it would have surpased halo in terms of sales coz all the xbots are ever waiting for is onother halo or gears

Ok if you think i'm bluffing can you make a list of 3 games on xbox that have made names for themselves like metal gear & gran turismo without mentioning halo & gears, I dare you

1 million sales at 60 a pop in one month. Oh, the poor babies will only each pocket a couple hundred thousand now. A huge production like this is already profitable half the way through its first month. This is the only 'artform' to reach those heights. Everyone that is saying this is a problem can eat themselves because all those developers are rich, the game is a success, and blah.

Try being a musician or a writer you ****heads! It's harder to make anything profitable let alone seeing this kind of success no matter which is more entertaining.

We've been through this countless of times from the first Motorstorm to LBP and most of the titles that get fingered go on to have very long legs and sell quit a bit. This isn't the movie business where the product has to do well in its first few weeks ya know.

I never played KZ2, i have it and it's just sitting there waitning to be played.

The reason...Valkyrie Chronicles which is another fantastic game that didn't sell well.

Point is, games don't have to sell well to be good.

I intend to buy it @ a later stage. My baby girl broke dads 6-axis so its going to eat into my gaming budget for the next 2 months. Why am I explaining all this? Well ladies and gentleman it doesn't cluckin matter how well a game sells on its release date/month. We are in the midst of a global recession. These "journalists" need to grow up and stop hating on SONY.

Somebody feel free to correct me, but I thought I read/heard that a big budget game must sell 2.5 million copies just to break even. (For the developer, the sale of the game gets split into multiple pockets.) So for this game to have only sold half so far, I guess that is a disappointment. Which is a shame as I enjoyed this game...........

i thought that preorder and get the demo was crap. how come US had to preorder while UK didnt? when i got home i used my redeem code then i went on my UK acc. every week like usual and i saw it at the PS store for FREE!!!!!! no preorder. i was pretty upset. but hey i love the game i just got my scout badge for sniper and im headshooting everyone. lol whos next.

I know anecdotal evidence is suspect but my roommate works at a Canadian EB Games and everyone is talking about KZ2 flopping or at least having disappointing sales. The preorders were good but it gets returned more quickly than similar shooters.

One thing that has not been brought up (I think): KZ2 got cranked by casual or general interest reviewers. The Globe and Mail newspaper guy ripped it and so did Crispy Gamer and other sites that don't have number scores. It may surprise some gamers with their heads stuck online but you now need non-gamers to buy-in to create a mega-seller. Killzone 2 did nothing to draw in those people and the more trustworthy reviews (IMO) reflected that. Putting up posters that say 5 out of 5 stars* (*Official PlayStation Magazine) just drew attention to how much of the hype came from compromised sources.

The game kz2 stinks i had the game on launch it's one of the worst fps i have ever played it reminds me of denied ops, i have all three consoles and i'm no fanboy but theres not much wrong with the ps3 it's just the games they are simply awful.

Halo 3 is a good BUT not great game...and it sold like hotcakes. Some amy say it's because of the FPS "street cred" that the 360 has, while others may say that Halo has a strong fanbase. I feel that Killzone 2 is FANTASTIC, and it is genre defining.

If most non-bias gamers will look at K2, they will see a game with never before seen player physics(Look how the solders fall in K2 and compare it to ANY OTHER console FPS), graphics/lighting(YOU DO KNOW THAT K2 IS ONLY IN 720P, RIGHT?), excellent sound effects(Listen to the weapons in Halo 2 and 3 Gears 1 and 2, THEN listen to the guns in K2. ONLY Rainbow 6/Ghost Recon games are arguably better.), AND a game with total control/responsive feel. (Meaning, the weapons feel unique and powerful, when you jump...the solider has to re-gather himself, and when the dust flys, your aim/sight is distorted...THAT'S SWEET!)

Also, sniping is damn near real...and people who don't like it, are the one's who are used to idiot prof sniping in COD4, Halo's, and that ridiculous "Auto-Reload" garbage in a otherwise outstanding Gears of War series. So when you say this game sucks, please keep all of this in mind. I will say that Halo: Combat Evolved is the BEST console shooter of all time, BUT K2 is just as good as the other Halo and Gear's titles.

Look here, Killzone 2 is sweet! Sorry it's not on the 360, but this hatin is ridiculous. PS3, 360, Wii, DS, PSP, and PC (Expecially the Alienware) are all great gaming/entertainment choices.

I prefer the PS3 this gen, mainly because of what is offer ME. I had/liked the 1st Xbox, Nintendo Gamecube, Sega Dreamcast, N64 and PS2. FOR ME, the PS3 is the ultimate gaming/multi-media machine, with a diverse library of games. Regardless who feelings I hurt, there is no argument about the number of quality exclusives on the PS3. Killzone 2 is one of the great ones, with graphics, physics, wepons, level design, sound effects, and story. (In my opinion, Halo: Combat Evolved is the GREATEST console shooter, EVER! Killzone is close, and better than Halo 3, and Gears 2.....Tied with Halo 2 and Gears 1.) The sales are great.....so stop hatin! There are PLENTY of great PS3 exclusive out there, not just 1 or 2 a year. MGS4, LBP, R1/R2, MLB: the show 08/08, Socom C., Grand Turisom 5: Prolouge, Unchated: Drakes Fortune, Ratchet and Clank, and Killzone 2. This year, it gets BETTER....God of War 3, Heavenly Rain, Uncharted 2, MAG, Grand Turismo 5, Final Fanasty/Versus, and Infamous are sill to come. (These will all sell a few million a piece, which is why one game will not just dominate.)

Blooody Heeellll why are so many people so hung up over what is and isn't a Halo Killer.

The PS3 and Playstation brand in general provides so much more variety in game genres than the xbox which every game is pretty much nothing but a brainless shooter with very few exceptions.

As for Halo killer they killed themselves IMO as Halo 3 had a ridicules high budget and it barely looks like anything beyond the capabilities of the first xbox.

Still believe today Halo 3 was rushed out in damage control mode when 360's were shatting themselves all over the place as Halo 3 was a piss poor effort for a so called next gen machine.

Sony fan boys will stop at nothing to defend this high dollar wrapped piece of garbage. I am so glad to see real people voting on this game with their money and the ones that did buy it have traded it in for something much better. When I was at GameStop today I had to laugh, there sitting on the shelf were four KZ2 games marked "USED" . I said some thing to the clerk and he was like people have been complaining about this game left and right. I told him about N4G.com and said you should read some of the post on there. "Its like KZ2 the 2nd coming, god forbid you say something about the controls or the horrible online play". Oh and fan boys stop with the "give the game a week or so you will get used to it". The game sucks. I would rather play RFOM2 than this pile any day.
