PS3 Attach Rate: Is This Hurting Software Sales?

Sony announced the sales figures for the PS3 which showed that the system has penetrated more than 21 million homes worldwide while maintaining a higher price point than the competition.
On the surface this is great news especially at a more expensive price point (for Sony). However, of the 21 million plus PS3 users worldwide, it makes you wonder, 'How many PS3 users are really gamers?' After looking at the sales figures for some of Sony's biggest exclusive software, it does begin to make you wonder.

Well I doubt that, however the price point is keeping gamers at bay from making the plunge. A significant PS3 price drop would change the game. Today it is not matter of enough software or online capabilities as factors holding the system back. The PS3 has all the bells and whistles, the price point is the factor.

no i am suggesting that the user base is at 22 million and is currently ahead of the 360 in the same time period. there is no problem with software, the problem (if it can be called that) is that PS owners are a varied bunch with diverse tastes in games. a FPS on the 360 will always sell better because that is the nature of the userbase

Look at the recent software sales...All PS3 software is on Par with 360 games, look at Resident Evil 5, Prince of Persia, Mirrors edge, Street Fighter. All have similar sales figures.

Sonys exclusives are doing great aswell. The rate LBP is selling, being consitently in the top 5 on Play and Amazon since before christmas, it'll be over 2 million soon. And ill be suprised if Killzone 2 isnt already over 2 million. But then again official figures arent realesed so I or this writer doesnt have the right to comment.

I would say are 360 gamers buying games ? Considering they have an extra 6 million consoles and still get similar software sales as PS3 games. The only games that sell alot better are FPS, with an avearge of 1 million more. So that extra 6 million is still very impressive attach rate...

And then the writer tops it off with "These numbers are taking from VG Chartz" Basically sums it up really. How many times have vgchartz been owned recently ? GTA4, Hardware sales, COD numbers.....

The reason is that there are more exclusive games on the PS3 to choose from. Xbox360 = Halo, Gears, Fable. Thats why their games has sold so much. Because there are no other games to choose from.

The exclusives on PS3 are tremendous and still growing. People cant even follow up. But they will, in time. And now that the PS3 has such a great exclusive library it will remain as a great selling point in time. The sales of every PS3 exclusive will increase.

Just think about the fact of a PS3 price reduced with free online play, blu-ray, better exclusive games, better hardware etc. What will people choose now? Xbox360 with Halo, Gears, Fable. Or PS3 with massive amount of exclusives for the whole family (Buzz!, Singstar, LBP, Killzone 2, Ratchet & Clank, MotorStorm, Resistance, Uncharted, God of War and soooo ooon), blu-ray, free online.

In the long term the PS3 will sell better and it has always been that way. Because Sony has the games. The Xbxo360 was a timed success that wont just stop in a day but it will slowly loose big ground to the PS3.

AND the games on PS3 will still sell which the games on the Xbox360 in the future wont as much.

i've had my ps3 since october08 and i already have 21 games and over 20 blu ray movies. The ps3 has plenty of games and everyone i know has at least 4 games in their collection. With games being $60 now and so many high quality games coming out so close to each other you cant expect everyone to buy every single game, especially with the way the economy is.

Remember not everybody who own a PS3 its really a hardcore gamer. A lot of people bought a PS3 console for Blu Ray. A real good example of that its my older brother. He play just 1 game on his PS3 (KZ2 because i make him buy it) but most of the time he is renting movies and games but pass more time playing PC games. Me on the other hand i am a gamer and when i have the time i rent a PS3 game to play it on his console.

Tough to get an answer. The only exclusive to sell very very well has been MGS4.

How many really bought a PS3 for other duties than gaming? Go on over there to the AVSforums and you'll be surprised. I just hooked up my buddies to his Wifi and this guy does not game at all. Goes great with his Bravia apparently.

Sony split the market. Doesn't take a fool to realize. Depending on what the competition does, they can still recover but not because of how many exclusives they got. Today it's about what you can afford. The exclusives are not pushing that much hardware, so who are not buying games?

If anything I would say the attach rate of the ps3 is affected quite a bit by the ammount of people who originally bought ps3's simply for blu-ray and/or media hubs, and not games. So theoretically the ammount of ps3 gamers could be less than the amount of ps3 owners. It would definitly explain some of the attach rate numbers.

I'm not gonna lie, I've actually had similar thoughts before about how many PS3 owners actually use their console for gaming... at the beginning, the PS3 wasn't always pushed as a Gaming Console, but as a Blu-ray Player in a lot of cases and a Gaming Console second.

Pretty much everyone that bought a Xbox 360 mainly bought it for gaming alone, but there's been plenty of people that have bought a PS3 solely for Blu-ray and a media hub.

However, I can't help but think that Sony knew that if the PS3 was going to be pushed as a Blu-ray player, everyone that got a PS3 wouldn't be using it for gaming, so it's not like Sony didn't see it coming.

Whatever the case, I think that PS3 software sales are pretty good right now considering the installbase. Various PS3 exclusives like Motorstorm Pacific Rift and Little Big Planet may not have sold as much as some may have expected, but you can't forget those games came out during the holiday rush.

And then there's people that have both the 360 and PS3, but only buy Exclusives for their PS3, because most people that have both the PS3 and 360 buy the majority of their multiplatform games only on the 360, and that can play a big part in PS3 software sales as well.... but that's a whole different story, lol.

And yes, I do realize there is some people who own both consoles and buy the majority of their games on the PS3, but for the most part, I'd say most people who own both consoles get the 360 version of a multiplat. game.

Once SEGA looked over and saw everyone buying PS2 to watch DVD movies at the electronic shops, where they were also sold, they knew it was game over.

Sony is not stupid. They are smart business men. (Just ask Toshiba) It's so easy to see the resemblance between the Dreamcast strategy and the MS one in todays gen, compared to back then. The Factors are different this time around in comparisons.

-Blu-Ray format is not the same rapid succesion as DVD
-Higher priced console
-Higher development cost.
-Lost Big 3rd=party only PS games
-Rejuvinated Nintendo

1) price.I got a PS1,2 on launch.I got a ps3 last December.They couldnt drop the price sooner. 2) when I got my PS3.they was only GT prologue and KZ2 (for this feb) that I wanted. why? And i honestly don't think it ever was or will be.

But i would'nt exactly call that a problem.

Yes they spent some money with killzone 2, but i wouldn't guess or be told how much unless it came from sony or gg.

PS1 & PS2 were the same way with regards to how games sold, different strokes for different folks.

And that's the way i like it.

You get a much more diverse library that way. and most importantly more interesting.

But attach rates for some games on PS3 are high.
