PC gamers, does this bother you?

Sync: If you've visited a few gaming forums lately, you might see players sounding off over THQ's Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II, a new fantasy strategy epic for the PC. What's the issue?

It's not the game-play found in this Canadian-made title that's the problem -- in fact, Relic Studios' new game has garnered an impressive score of 85.40%, averaged out from 31 publications listed at GameRankings.com -- but the mandatory Windows Live ID registration is irking some players.

You see, Dawn of War II requires players to sign up for a Games for Windows - LIVE profile (Windows Live ID) if they don't have one already -- even to play an offline, single-player game. If you don't sign up, you can't play the game.

We thought we'd go to the source to find out why this is required.

PC gaming is a pain in the ass.

ChampIDC5931d ago

When the developer isn't very cooperative, it sure can be a pain. Some have the formula down, but darn do some suck at it.

How so?

I haven't had any problem with any game recently. They've all run flawlessly, or close to that. I didn't even have any problems with Grand Theft Auto IV.

If only all games were as smooth as MGS4 online.

(Don't get me wrong, I love the single player.)

It kind of sucks that they did force GFW Live on you in order to play, but this is nothing compared to the hoops you had to go through when signing up for MGO. Konami really phucked up, and it's sad because MGO was actually quite fun.

I have had no issues with Dawn of war 2s GFW intergration. worked fine every time i have played the game. Just took a few minutes to import my profile.

thats 1 of the reasons why i didnt get this game. u buy it off steam, then u gotta register on GFWL.

It's not the end of the world....i'm sure most of you have MSN that's got you half way there...But saying this,I do already have a LIVE account so it didn't bother me too much.

moses5931d ago

It really isn't that terrible. If you want to just play, you say create local gamertag and you enter in a name, and wollah, you're playing. If you want to play multiplayer, there are always hamachi lan overrides you can use ;)!

I agree. It's not really a problem at all. It's exactly the same thing as Xbox LIVE and its gamertags.

History of Real-Time Strategy: The Downfall (2004 - 2010)

VGChatz's Taneli Palola: "There's no question that during these years the overall popularity of the genre took a significant hit, as most games within it specialized even further by adding new elements from other types of games into their gameplay loops and consequently became increasingly niche as the years wore on.

However, this doesn't in any way mean that the period was devoid of great games. Quite the contrary, in fact. Arguably some of the greatest RTS titles ever made came out around this time, and much of this was because many developers were increasingly familiar and comfortable with adding new twists and gameplay elements to the familiar formula. As such, even when the genre's popularity dwindled, many studios were still creating excellent and groundbreaking titles almost every year, just for a smaller audience than in years past."

those were fun years red alert star craft command and conquer well when westwood studio made good games before EA brought them like bioware...

Vegamyster2225d ago

Aside from C&C 4, the other C&C's from EA were all good/great. The genre nose dived once Moba's rose in popularity, even Petroglyph Games (ex-Westwood employees) haven't had a hit since Star Wars: Empire at War (2006), all there games got abandoned after launch.

Ultimate Apocalypse: How a Mod Revitalised a Forgotten Classic - GamerTime UK

"This week when I was scrolling through my Steam library for a game to play I was stumped, until I found a mod which brought fresh air to an old classic. The game was the legendary Dawn of War series by Relic. The Dawn of War expansions; Winter Assault, Dark Crusade and Soulstorm along with other stand-alone titles like Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine, give the universe the justice it rightly deserved."
