Update: Sony Expects to Sell 100 Million PS3s

Sony's massively successful PlayStation and PlayStation 2 consoles both sold upwards of 100 million units worldwide. But despite the PlayStation 3's steep price point, Sony's sales expectations haven't flagged at all.

Their a business, with shareholders. If they came out and said "Sorry guys I think we've priced it out of the mass market and won't sell as many as we hoped" they'd be in real trouble. All companies EXPECT huge sales they wouldn't make the thing otherwise, Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, Toyota, Mcdonalds. What a pontless story :)

PS360PCROCKS6514d ago (Edited 6514d ago )

You know what...I'd love to say PS3 will only be as popular as Blu-Ray will be...but that isn't true, and I'd love to say it's to highly priced to appeal to a regular consumer, which it is but we all know everyone will get it simply cause it's shiny and says "SONY"... They've dropped the ball big time on this one, sony continues to shoot it's self in the foot repeatedly with their comments all contradicting what the other execs are saying. They have made some bad business decisions, but you know what the sad thing is their are people who don't see what they do, know what their doing or care about what their being forced to make a standard and that alone is the reason why the ps3 will win, which is just a shame, if people were more informed and knew what we know when it comes to Sony, their would be a much different outcome with these game machines, because ingenuity and creativity should win out, because their videogames remember, not damn movie players, their game machines, Nintendo is the one who should win, they deserve it, they're the only ones with that ingenuity and creativity, not Microsoft...Not Sony... Microsoft get's the nod for listening to consumers and giving them on-line gaming and the arcade and the demos but in the end all these two are doing is slapping a bigger processor and graphics card in a box, (and a non-standard movie player) giving you a wireless controller and selling it for twice of the last generation. It's a shame what we, me included will buy from these two companies, I remember Nintendo, simply Nintendo, when it used to be fun, when it wasn't confusing for a consumer, when a videogame was a videogame, don't get me wrong I love the new graphics, gameplay, and new features, their cool but hardly necessary...but in the end their just selling you specs, they're handing you a box with no ingenuity, no creativity involved just a box showing you how big your graphics card is, your GPU, and how it's going to be so life-like you'll be in aww of it, I'm not sure where the road changed but I would rather seeing these other two companies sitting down and saying "How can we make videogames fun with these new machines" rather than sitting down and saying "How can we make these machines more profitable" I'm not sure about any of you but Mario anyday will always be the most amazing game ever created...because it was innovative and I can personally say I get more from 5 minutes of Mario than I could ever get from any videogame in the past 10 years...k sorry for the rant...PEACE

Just curious...how can my comment (#2) possibly be disagreed with twice? It's the most straight forward comment I've ever written on this website, and it's totally true, but I guess thats why we all have an opinion, but if your going to disagree, let me know why...

Expectation maybe a little to high much like your price

TheMART6513d ago

Well they have to say this, because they almost had 600 million dollar loss in first quarter 2006.

But well I don't know if the selling of the PS3 changes so much about those losses. Every PS3 will have something like 300 dollars loss on hardware. That times the number of consoles sold is an extra loss.

It could get profatible if the rate of games sold per console would be high. BUT the PS2 also had an average number of 2 games sold per console. XBOX/360 has an average of 5 games sold per console. There you have the difference. It's difficult to get the loss back with so few games per console sold...

The possible 'free' online service won't help them either. They won't make money on that part also, only loss. And what's the choice? Get a 'free' sh*tty online service (all things for free mostly s*ck bigtime) or pay a little (5 dollars a month for Live is worth a lot of fun compare it to 20 dollars to see a movie @ the boxoffice in hours of fun) for a premium service.

I think even Sony fans would choose the last option.

So Sony sell 100 million consoles is not the most important. To sell games, services and more, that's the most important base for a company

the_bebop6513d ago

Why is it you always have to make comments like this all the time, go back to your Xbox section of this website and stop annoying people.I am no Fanboy but What I can tell that I know while there are people who will buy the Playstation and its games no mater what we are not idiotic fanboys or people we do know that Sony will make big losses just like other companies. As for Sony Products they always sell it for high Prices.

"It could get profitable if the rate of games sold per console would be high. BUT the PS2 also had an average number of 2 games sold per console. XBOX/360 has an average of 5 games sold per console. There you have the difference. It's difficult to get the loss back with so few games per console sold..."

I have more then five games and intend to get four more.

"The possible 'free' online service won't help them either. They won't make money on that part also, only loss. And what's the choice? Get a 'free' sh*tty online service (all things for free mostly s*ck bigtime) or pay a little (5 dollars a month for Live is worth a lot of fun compare it to 20 dollars to see a movie @ the boxoffice in hours of fun) for a premium service."

Even though Sony won't make money off there online Services I bet Games developers will end up charge for updates and such on there games, which they will have to pay money to Sony for being on the PS3 because it will be part of what these companies will have to enter into there agreement for doing games on the PS3.

And maybe you can tel me why you and other people have to make this into an Xbox VS Playstation.

I am reacting on industry news. That's news in the console industry. I have the right to give my opinion on these statements Sony makes. If you don't like it, that's not my problem.

I give statements with facts. If you don't like them, don't go to news4gamers.com because it is a portal to PS3, XBOX and general industry news.

That said if you don't like it go to a general PS3 site without sections. Furthermore, I see that you have comments that could make sence, so let's answer those.

YOu own more then 5 games and have the thought of getting 4 more. That's you. That's no empirical statements build on facts. Research has shown the average is low on PS2 games on each console and that the original xbox/360 sells 5 games average which is more then double on PS2. Fact end of discussion. ROI is low on that part of consoles sold with possible loss. Sony is not having the right numbers to be on top. What's the goal: pushing as much systems with a low average games sold or sell a bit less systems and higher average number of games sold? Tell me

So you say companies have to pay Sony for online gaming of consumers. That sounds interesting. So it gets more expensive for producers to launch their games on Sony's platform. Where do the game producers get that money back on? Two possibilities:

1. Games will be more expensive
2. The producers themselve will charge consumers on using game servers.

Nr. 1 will cost you a lot more when you buy more games then paying seperately for a online service

Nr. 2 is done with PS2 and we all know what sh*tty that was. Almost no online support or broken online gaming, paying for it and one feels betrayed.

So if you're a big boy you don't whine, but react with facts. If you don't than please don't post will ya

the_bebop6513d ago

I wasn't whinging its just that every time I see you posting on this website it seem you are always posting something negative most of time, I am not saying you are whinger. Maybe you could post some sources for some of your info, also is the Research world wide or just from America or one country in particular.

Attach rate original XBOX:

"LOS ANGELES (Reuters) -

The attach rate, or average number of games sold per console, stood at about 5.4:1 in the United States and 5:1 globally as of June 30, Microsoft said."

Attach rate 360

"The overall software attach rate for Xbox 360 is still a record-breaking 4.5 titles per console in the United States, and accessory attach rate remains at a record-breaking 2.9 units per console as well. As we head into the summer months, Xbox 360 gamers can’t wait to get their hands on upcoming favorites like "Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle Earth 2" (Electronic Arts), "NCAA Football 2007” (Electronic Arts), the Xbox 360 exclusive "Chromehounds" (SEGA), the Xbox 360 exclusive "Dead Rising" (Capcom), "Madden NFL 2007" (Electronic Arts), and the Xbox 360 exclusive "Ninety Nine Nights" (MGS)."

http://www.onthexbox.com/ne...

Compare attach rates for consoles in the same time of the life cycle. So after 6 months after launch 360 with PS2. And XBOX after few years with PS2.

You'll see XBOX/360 score better.

360 with an average of 4 or 5 is twice the number within 6 months after launch of PS2.

http://www.eurogamer.net/ar...

You can compare these numbers, 4 games by launch in november 360 with the highest number of games sold @ launch with the original XBOX average 2.4 (the PS2 was under this number, somewhere between 1 and 2 games):

http://www.kotaku.com/gamin...

"REDMOND, Wash., Dec. 4, 2001 — The Xbox (TM) video game system from Microsoft Corp. had the best-selling video game console launch on record after two weeks of sales, according to The NPD Group Inc., the definitive source for sales and market data on the video game industry.

"The data clearly show that Xbox is off to a torrid start," said Robbie Bach, chief Xbox officer at Microsoft. "Xbox sold out as soon as we launched, and we're selling systems as fast as we can produce them. More than 100,000 units a week are being delivered to retailers, so game players are likely to find Xbox systems throughout the holiday season. With one of the best launch lineups ever, I understand why Xbox is the most sought-after gift for the holiday."

Most importantly, Xbox purchasers can't get enough of the Xbox launch games. According to The NPD Group, gamers are buying 2.4 Xbox games with every Xbox, resulting in the highest game attach rate ever recorded for a console at launch. Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. sold 1.9 games with every PlayStation 2 during the first two weeks of its launch last year, and Nintendo Company Ltd. has sold 1.9 games with every GameCube to date. "

Well, there you have it some facts for your knowledge

the_bebop6513d ago

I cant make heads or tails of these quotes, it could be interpreted in many different ways.

TheMART6513d ago (Edited 6513d ago )

If you can't I think it's good to highlight the most important numbers:

LAST GEN
According to The NPD Group, gamers are buying:

2.4 Xbox games with every Xbox, resulting in the highest game attach rate ever recorded for a console at launch.

Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. sold 1.9 games with every PlayStation 2 during the first two weeks of its launch last year

Nintendo Company Ltd. has sold 1.9 games with every GameCube to date.

Average 2.4 game XBOX is > then average PS2/Nintendo 1.9 AGREE?

360

The overall software attach rate for Xbox 360 is still a record-breaking 4.5 titles per console in the United States, and accessory attach rate remains at a record-breaking 2.9 units per console as well.

Average games sold 360 4.5 is > then original XBOX 2.4 and also > then PS2/Nintendo 1.9

It sells double the last gen attach rate of a PS2 by ease. Now you understand? Bebop if you don't understand these simple numbers, you'll never get it. I rest my case

First they release a black big PS2 then a year or so later a coloured PS2 then a slim line ps2 and they where the first out before the xbox 1,so thats how the sold so much, and its a good way of selling, and they will do the same thing with the ps3.

TheMART6513d ago

They sell so many PS2's because every owner have to get a new one once in a while because the DVD player is of sh*tty quality. All my friends I know with a PS2 can't play any games, because their DVD drive won't read their games (properly). So now the price drops so much, they get a new one because they invested in some games they would like to play... But that one will be sh*tty again, so there you have the large number of consoles sold...

Mugen Souls Retro Review – Sexy Demon Space Adventure

Gary Green said: We have a juxtaposition of 2D and 3D visuals, flashy turn-based combat, quirky anime characters with cheeky dialogue with plenty of partial nudity; Yes, this is a Compile Heart JRPG. Whilst the engine is borrowed from Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2, Mugen Souls is more of a Disgaea spin-off. It’s not a strategy RPG as such, it merely sits within Disgaea’s ever-expanding universe (Multiverse? Netherverse? Your guess is as good as mine). You won’t find cameos though, since Mugen Souls is a franchise which aims to stand on its own two feet.

I don’t think anything can compare to 2023

lucasnooker4h ago

1998 - the best year in gaming! Metal gear solid, crash bandicoot 3, medievil, half life, ocarina of time, thief, tenchu, resident evil 2, Spyro, tomb raider 3, oddworld abes exodus, banjo kazooie.

It was a different breed of a gaming era. You’ll never understand what it was like back then. The aura of gaming, it was different!

KyRo3h ago(Edited 3h ago)

I second this. Gaming was a lot more varied and fun than it is today. I'm 35 so getting on compared to some here but I got to see all the changes from NES up to now but I've never felt so disappointed in any generation than I have this current gen. I was expecting more from this generation rather than prettier versions of games that came before it. Game mechanics have become so refined that alot of games feel the same and has done for a while now.

Maybe it's time to have a break for a while. I love gaming but I don't feel I get much fun in the traditional sense out of it anymore.

CrimsonWing693h ago(Edited 3h ago)

Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Abe’s Exodus, and Ocarina of Time are the only things from that list that I liked.

Here’s the 2023 game releases that I personally liked… and big releases that I didn’t care for:

- Dead Space Remake
- Wo Long Dynatsy
- Resident Evil 4 Remake
- Diablo 4
- Fire Emblem Engage
- Hogwarts Legcay
- Street Fighter 6
- Hi-Fi Rush
- Like a Dragon: Ishin
- Octopath Traveler 2
- Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters
- Final Fanatsy XVI (actually ended up not liking this, but it was still a big deal release)
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
- Lies of P
- Mortal Kombat 1
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- Starfield (Ended up hating this one, but big release)
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (I’m an old-school Zelda fan, but didn’t really enjoy this game)
- Alan Wake 2

I mean, honestly I’ve never seen a year of major IP releases like that, ever.

Profchaos37m ago(Edited 34m ago)

Isn't it just a generational thing realistically.

I've been gaming since way back and I some of my favourite games go as far back as the late 80s for me each generation has a year or two of game changing releases one after another before an inevitable dry spell.

I kind of agree gaming had a different feel games hit different because we didn't have the internet nothing got spoiled and you really had to put in the effort to beat a puzzle which could set entire groups of people looking for a solution. But most importantly games were experimental and not as cookie cutter as today even basics like controls were not universal today r2 is shoot l2 is ads garunteed you can't deviate from that in a shooter back then it could of been square, R1 or R1 and circle nothing was standard.

But as time moves on a new generation picks up their controller they are going to be interested in different things that PS1 demo disc with the t Rex blew our primitive 16 bit brains back on launch but to kids today it's laughable.
The new gen of kids coming into to hobby seem to value different things to us there seems to be a huge focus on online play, streamers, gaming personalities, and social experiences, convience of digital downloads. To me I value none of that but that's ok like my parents not liking the band's I would listen to its just the natural cycle.

Pretty much all of these games listed are based around a morality system you don't have to be bad and you don't have to be good.

It seems to have left out some real amazing games like red dead redemption 1/2,ass effect and true crime la/ny

Tacoboto9h ago

Armored Core VI?

Ok, I'm really missing something here. Just beat chapter 3 earlier this evening, unlocked A-rank Arena fights. I'm not seeing or sensing any branching paths or morality system and I've done every side mission and arena fight available to me up to that fight.

Is something big coming soon to branch the story?

banger888h ago

No mention of Grand Theft Auto? Saints Row (original trilogy), Manhunt? Also The Suffering (depending on the ending you get).
