Square Enix Losing Its Touch

"Does anybody else see what has happened to Square Enix? I remember Square Enix being a major graphical power house back in the day, with the gameplay and story to match the spectacular graphics. As a gamer, how cool was it the first time you laid eyes on Sin in Final Fantasy X? Or what about how you genuinely felt sadness when Aeris died in Final Fantasy VII? Yeah I know the answer; Awestruck is how you probably felt because those were some of the most memorable scenes in gaming history. However, if you look at Square Enix nowadays it appears that they have lost their way. Square Enix was once one of gaming's most elite publishers. Now the majority of their games are not hyped anymore, and there not that well received by critics and gamers alike. What has happened to Square Enix?"

Square Enix sold out. They lost a lot of their original talent, they leaned too heavily on their flagship franchises, they shoveled out a lot of mediocre and glitchy games, and the company is being run by a complete fool. They have been alienating and dividing their fanbase for the past several years and spoon feeding them hum-ho games.

True RPG gamers moved on to other companies such as ATLUS, Nippon Ichi, Bioware, Intelligent Systems, Level-5, etc a long time ago.

swiftshot935940d ago

Bioware is indeed awesome. They're freakin amazing actually.

Blademask5940d ago

That summed it up. I kinda have nothing to add. Interested in seeing what the opposite opinion is though. Interested in the person that thinks this is the company that we all grew up with. With such amehing releases.

Shadow Flare5940d ago

I've lost interest in Final Fantasy since FF10. FF7 was the first Final Fantasy and RPG i ever played and i think its still the best game ever made. FF8 is an incredibly good game. FF10 was a great game with a great story. FF12 i tried and got bored of, which has never happened before. I didn't even bother with FFX-2. FF13 so far has not interested me at all. It's just flashy effects, with characters that look like they're straight from FFX-2 if you know what i mean.

Sorry SE, but i'm not even bothered about FF13. The only thing i used to care about was an FF7 remake, but i dont care about that anymore. Because even if it happens, they will ruin it. They will ruin it with that crappy real-time battle system, and the awful, awful english voice-acting. If you want a tip on how to make a move in the right direction, here's a starter: Bring out FF7 in HD on psn with a whole heap of trophy's to collect. With that alone, you would make millions. Do something right Square

Chris3995940d ago (Edited 5940d ago )

And Yoichi Wada is running the place into bankruptcy. The man is a fool.

Oh, on a brighter note, the PC version of Last Remnant plays better than the one I paid $70 for. I abhor piracy, but I will be downloading the torrent for sure; figure I've already paid for a working game once, I've just never had the pleasure of ACTUALLY playing the functional version.

P.S. There's too many guns and robots for them to really call the series Final Fantasy anymore. "Final Fantasy: The Empire Strikes Back" would be more appropriate. It would be a spin-off really, which as we all know, Square Enix are the masters of.

InfectedDK5940d ago (Edited 5940d ago )

They should have focused on PS3 exclusives, they should have trusted in themselves instead of accepting impulsive money bids leaving THE console behind. Focus on the games not consoles. That's the answer.

@1.7
It's just a well known fact that making a game from scratch on the PS3 ends up with a bigger result if you want it and have what it takes. And I think they have or had that potential and people thought they would come out with something but they sold out in a hope to earn more money that way. Hope FF 13 and versus gets the treatment they deserve on the PS3 now they are using so much time making FF 13 to the 360 also. I think their focus has been taken away. But I hope not for all the fans. (Hoping to see their new tower defence game on PSN soon).

PistolPumptMonk5940d ago

Well to be truthful, Square Enix didn't really sell out. They have always been sellouts. SquareSOFT were the ones who were truly amazing. (may they rest in peace)

I was hoping Enix could pick up where Squaresoft left off, but so far I have been proven quite wrong, with their best games being remakes of Squaresoft games.... sigh...

v1c1ous5940d ago

"They should have focused on PS3 exclusives, they should have trusted in themselves instead of accepting impulsive money bids leaving THE console behind. Focus on the games not consoles. That's the answer."

please tell me you did not contradict yourself in the same post in less than 2 sentences...

you REALLY think making the last remnant and infinite undiscovery ps3 exclusive would have made them good games?

grow up kid.

heroicjanitor5940d ago

Microsoft bought square enix itself as a timed exclusive? Anyway they didn't believe in their games enough, they didn't believe that with their help the playstation would get back on top and sell their games, and they took the promise of a quick buck over long term success. It turned out they won't even have short term success.

el_bandito5940d ago

It was really better before the square-enix merger. Things now have changed. I have a PS3/360, and when I read that SE's VP said:"We don't want the PlayStation 3 to be the overwhelming loser, so we want to support them, but we don't want them to be the overwhelming winner either, so we can't support them too much."

Thing is, this form of support they are telling has yet to come out. Not that they haven't released games yet, they have actually--- counting the multiplat and handheld games they have released so far. But, these games have accounted for the evident diminishing quality of game-making SE have done for sometime. Before the merger, all Square cared about was making the best game to earn money and a loyal fan base . Now, all SE thinks about is making money period.

UltimateIdiot9115940d ago (Edited 5940d ago )

Whatever is possessing EA (though it's leaving a bit) is also possessing SE.

InfectedDK5940d ago

@1.8 Agree, that's what I thought too.

EzekielRAGE5940d ago

Was the best imo. The story and characters were spot on. Sadly the Final Fantasies that followed didn't have that magic like ten did.

XxZxX5940d ago (Edited 5940d ago )

most of the XBOX 360 people(not all) hate JRPG, they rather play Oblivion,Bioshock or Fallout 3. It's funny that Square Enix don't realize that. One word, SCREWED.

XIII is a bad number, look like it gonna end at 13.

JokesOnYou5940d ago (Edited 5940d ago )

Truth is Square Enix has had alot of medicore or low scoring games throughout their history, for just about every platform, I'm not really a jrpg lover so I don't know much about their games but aside from the FF series most of their games haven't recieved universal praise as far as reviews go, just like we've recently seen with their 360 games. Now I'm not saying now or then many jrpg fans haven't enjoyed these games, I'm just saying from a scoring point of view they've always been hit or miss. I simply put Square Enix in the search bar on metacritic and as you can see, they have a ton of games but plenty of them are medicore or in other words nothing has changed much about Square Enix over the yrs, looks like FF is their bread and butter just like it will be this gen:

Wii: Dragon Quest Swords: The Mask Queen and the Tower of Mirrors (2008) 65
Nintendo DS: Final Fantasy III (2006) 77
GameBoy Advance: Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories (2004) 76

Sony PSP: Star Ocean: First Departure (2008) 74
Sony PSP: Final Fantasy Anniversary Edition (2007) 67
Playstation 2: Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII (2006) 57
Playstation 2: Dawn of Mana (2007) 57
Playstation 2: Romancing SaGa (2005) 58
Playstation 2: Kingdom Hearts Re: Chain of Memories (2008) 70
Playstation 2: Front Mission 4 (2004) 75
Playstation 2: Unlimited SaGa (2003) 45

Xbox 360: Star Ocean: The Last Hope (2009) 79
Xbox 360: Last Remnant, The (2008) 65
Xbox 360: Infinite Undiscovery (2008) 68
Xbox 360: Project Sylpheed: Arc of Deception (2007) 64

Aside from FF series I think the only other game from Square Enix rated over 90 is Chrono Trigger...I could be wrong.

badz1495940d ago

you should have noticed that there is something wrong with your company if you are one of the major dev and publisher and you still don't have a single title on one particular console even after 2 years! in SE case, they are actually neglecting the PS3 even in JAPAN! WADA is STUPID!

AAACE55940d ago

People may not want to hear this, but Square started going down when Sakaguchi was tired of the company!

The last great FF game was FFX! Once they merged, everything started to go in a different direction. Sakaguchi left SE and so did the soul of the franchise. It still has the FF look that we know, but it is a shell of it's former self.

Future FF games will be fun and entertaining, but will never give gamers those old feelings that made them love the franchise so much in the first place!

SaiyanFury5939d ago

@1.0 GWAVE

I'd have to agree ultimately. S-E sold out and has been relaxing on their laurels and the name to push their games. They were great back when they were Squaresoft, as just about everything they put out was great. Focusing more on making great games more than making money. Since Squaresoft merged with ENIX (another classic publisher) they became a corporation where their styles merged instead of separating their own great developers. Now S-E focuses more on remakes than original games and the original ones they make aren't the same quality that we enjoyed back in the days of the PS1. I'm not even really interested in FFXIII seeing how much robotics and guns are in the game. The environment looks like a sterile shooting game. Where's the fantasy? The organic environs that we enjoyed in the FF series. Final Fantasy XII was great in it's presentation; organic environs and great game mechanics where you control your own characters' AI to react to various situations. Sure some people didn't like FFXII, but almost being a regular JRPG version of Final Fantasy Tactics, I loved it. My last game was 105 hours with a normal character level of 80. I kicked the final boss's ass easily. FFXIII almost seems more mechanical and sterile in nature. Because they're trying to appeal more to the west in this aesthetic, I've lost interest in it. I hope it's good, but I fear my predictions will come true.

FF13 and FFV13 look pretty phenomenal from a graphical standpoint. But I didnt have fun with FF12 so I got angry at square. Honestly the only games that I would really look forward to buying from them is Kingdom Hearts 3 and some kind of spiritual successor (or sequel?) to Chrono Trigger/Cross.

Edit: Ok, how the hell did I get a disagree? Can someone reply saying what they disagree with? LOL there is nothing. Fool.

PistolPumptMonk5940d ago

People will disagree with you for existing. Welcome to N4G.

v1c1ous5940d ago (Edited 5940d ago )

was the first FF game i had to STRUGGLE to finish cause i was bored.

it was the FIRST FF game i returned to the store. it was the first FF game i did not even WANT to replay.

LeonSKennedy4Life5940d ago

Not excited for Versus 13?

That's the Kingdom Hearts team! You HAVE to be excited! It looks incredible!

FinalFantasyFanatic5940d ago

Although, Even I managed to finish X-2 (Because it wasn't boring me).

MasFlowKiller5940d ago (Edited 5940d ago )

i dont know man the last trailer with th 30sec of gameplay looked like trash to me and i downloaded the 720p HD trailer to play in my 1080p 52 in TV.

not only that but the battle system(from wat i read from the kotaku analysis way back) and from the 30sec of game play in the last trailer didn't impress me

Am still waiting for the demo to come out in japan so i can import it,
i dont want to give up on this game but if it look like the last trailer did then i guess Final Fantasy X-2 was my last FF game

AlternativeChaos5940d ago

u didn't need and HD TV to tell that the graphics look like trash, yeah am passing on this one,

the game has been in development for like ever and the from the last trailer it just look like a sloppy disaster

not expecting that much from wat i seen

360FanLord5940d ago (Edited 5940d ago )

"FF13 and FFV13 look pretty phenomenal from a graphical standpoint."
sorry son but the last trailer that actually shows gameplay, graphically it looked like Sh!t, u would have to have pink eye not see how phenomenally bad those graphics were.

i hate to call u out but if u think this game look phenomenal then i hate to see wat u actually think is ugly

SE lose the touch, they tried to westernize all their games but the cost was the loss of quality

xbollox5940d ago

them butchering FF13 onto DVD9 was the final nail on the coffin.
it's beyond losing touch, it's senility.

think about how FF13 could've been as a 1080p PS3 bluray exclusive and 0 compromises... any self respecting artist would've done that.

instead, it'll be dumbed down multiplat mediocrity made by greedy hasbeens

F@CK SQUARE, they're done

Shadow Man5940d ago

They do not make games for the 360.

Tri Ace makes games for the 360.

Hallucinate5939d ago

even so..when a publsiher publishes a title they either take the love or the hate..unless its like cod or something

SpoonyRedMage5939d ago

xbollox good news!! FFXIII is being developed as if it was a PS3 exclusive, they're going all out on it, releasing for the PS3 in Japan and then porting it for NA and Europe. It'll go on as many DVDs as it needs and I'm sure Microsoft wouldn't dare try to make them pay for extra discs.

Of course the PS3 fanboys will disagree and will even lie to make it seem like it's been dumbed down.

STAR OCEAN, LAST HOPE IS THE SH-T. AT FIRST GIVEN THE OTHER GAMES SQUARE ENIX HAS PUBLISHED OR HELPED ON, HAVE BEEN SH-T LATELY.

I WAS NERVOUS BUYING STAR OCEAN, AFTER ABOUT 3 TO 4 HOURS INTO THE GAME, IT STARTS ALL COMING TOGETHER AND MAKING THE GAME SO MORE ADDICTIVE.THE NOISES ON THE START UP SCREEN SOUND LIKE THERE FROM A OLD FINAL FANTASY, ADDS A GOOD TASTE TO THE GAME.

THE BATTLE MODE IS WAY DIFFERENT. MAKES THE FIGHTING MORE ENJOYABLE , YOU GOT SO MANY OPTIONS.

ONCE YOU GET TO YOUR SECOND PLANET YOU FIND A GOOD TREASURE WHICH LETS YOU DETECT ALL THE OTHER CHESTS.
THIS IS THE SH-T CAUSE THE CHEST ALSO LEVEL YOU UP LIKE FIGHTING DOES.

IF YOUR A RPG FAN, THIS IS A MUST HAVE.

they really lost that spark that made rpgs now it seems like every little idea they get they slam it to the ground what happened to games like final fantasy 3 (6)in the us or 7,man the talent the has left the building bring back squaresoft.

PoSTedUP5940d ago

yea hopefully FF13 is really good because they need to make a come back or they'll become extinct...

TheColbertinator5940d ago

Lazy remakes, console games with performance issues, delays, announcing vaporware(Agito XIII,One Goal Spirit),closed theaters and refusing to remake the games everyone likes such as Parasite Eve or Vagrant Story. Not to mention their titles are flopping like flapjacks at an IHOP.

Square Eix are just a bunch of dinosaurs who are making all the wrong decisions.Star Ocean 4 is good and is not made by SE.Its made by Tri-Ace and I applaud Tri-Ace for that, not Square Enix.

The only decisions I have approved from SE was the announcement of FFXIII on 360 and Dragon Quest 10 on the Wii.Other than that,I see little else they have done that has satisfied the quality RPG gamer.

And now they announce a merger with Eidos, who has also performed poorly with Kane & Lynch,Tomb Raider Underworld, and Shellshock.

The 7 Best Final Fantasy Characters: Unveiling the Legends

While FFVII ranks highly, there's more to the series than one game. Here's Chit Hot's picks for the seven best Final Fantasy characters.

220°

The older it gets, the more I respect Final Fantasy XIII

Alex Donaldson: "Hindsight is a hell of a thing, however, and in the years since Final Fantasy XIII, my respect for the decisions its developers made has skyrocketed. In the two Final Fantasy titles since we see both the brilliance and the folly in alternative approaches - and in Final Fantasy VII Remake, we get a more nuanced understanding of what FF13 was trying to accomplish from many of the same development leads."

Einhander1972541d ago

FFXIII is actually one of the best Final Fantasy games.

I also sort of was disappointed at the time, never as much as the bandwagon. But really all the fantastic 3D rendered cutscenes and I actually liked the characters and the story though convoluted was actually fantastic and the ending was extremely emotional. So much budget and time were put into that game Square had such big plans, I actually have always felt kind of bad for how things played out.

I have been thinking for years how great it would be to get all three games on one disk for PS4 or 5.

Nyxus541d ago

I always liked this game, and I agree, a rerelease for current gen would be nice.

Shane Kim540d ago (Edited 540d ago )

Gotta take off the nostalgia glasses. It's the worst FF. Shiva as a bike, I mean come on.

Elda540d ago

Shiva as a bike is strange but saying FFXIII is the worst FF is not at all a fact, that's simply your opinion.

Terry_B539d ago

*One of the 3 equally bad FF's

DivineHand125540d ago (Edited 540d ago )

When I got my series X a year ago, I bought FF13 for nostalgia reasons but ended up being disappointed. When I first played it around the time it launched, I didn't have a lot of experience with final fantasy games, so I enjoyed it. Fast forward to when I played it again, I found that the game had many unnecessary filler moments instead of just giving us meaningful content.

The game is also very linear and a quote on the article said it best. "It is like a sewage pipe that leads to the ocean until it opens up on Grand Pulse."

The story didn't make much sense either and I believe it is my mistake as I played the FF7 remake on PS5 prior which is a night and day difference in terms of pacing, storytelling and likeable characters even though cloud is aloof.

FinalFantasyFanatic539d ago (Edited 539d ago )

Probably was a mistake to play any of the golden era FFs first (e.g. FF6 through FF10), it makes it harder to enjoy some of the FFs that aren't as good. I think FF12 was where major issues with the series started becoming apparent, and it just got worse from there.

FinalFantasyFanatic539d ago (Edited 539d ago )

I didn't really care for it that much, the only saving grace was that it had a better story than 15 (overall it was better than 15) and possibly 12, and even then, you had to read some of it through primers, like reading a book. Plus the battle system was reasonably fun for what it was, even if it was more the spectacle that was exciting for me (e.g. summoning). And to be fair, the 13 trilogy got better with every games, I still don't like Snow though.

Gamingsince1981539d ago

Ff13 is only good if you haven't played a ff before, or any other games that are decent for that matter.

-Foxtrot539d ago

It is in fact no way the best Final Fantasy game, it's one of the worst

Linear corridors, Cutscene, Fight, Cutscene...rinse and repeat

Dialogue and characters are pretty bad, especially Lightning as the main FF hero, they literally said they tried to make a "Female Cloud" and they failed.

Story was pretty awful

I could go on

I think the only alright thing that came from the game was the music.

Elda539d ago

That's not a fact that's your personal opinion. The game sold 11 million copies between its 2009 release up until 2014 including critically reviewed as an 8 out of 10 or an 80 out of 100. The game does have some issues but it's not at all a fact as one of the worst FF games.

i liked the game alot but i didnt like how they handled the terminology.

i dont mind reading data logs but it had soo many.

but i always loved the music and how it looked. the battle system wasnt too bad either.

but i like 13-2 more :)

i still dont understand why we never got a remaster of the trilogy

Eonjay539d ago

Xbox kinda did. Besides the video files of course which are still best on PS3 due to bluray.

Snookies12541d ago

XIII is a pretty solid game, but XIII-2 is WAY better. XIII-2 was one of the few games I decided to go for a Platinum trophy in, early on. Had so much fun the entire way through getting it too!

Eonjay539d ago

Totally agree. FF 13 was okay but 13-2 is my favorite FF game ever.

shinoff2183541d ago (Edited 541d ago )

I hated this to when it released. I haven't much liked a ff game since ff10 as much , aside from ff7remake. I decided to give it another shot on my series x since it's not on a current ps and was liking it quite a bit(just takes me some time to get over things ) until star ocean 2 remake came out I was all over that.

Square should definitely remaster it or something for ps4 ps5
