The Lack of PS3 RPGs Is Disturbing

Look, PSX Extreme knows they will never again see the days of the original PlayStation, when RPGs were a super big deal and Squaresoft was essentially Godlike according to fans of the genre. They are not really even asking for a return to the days of the PS2, when they at least saw plenty of RPGs in the second, third, and fourth years of the system's existence. All they are asking for are a few RPGs here and there that they may wish to play.

A decade ago, such a list was almost entirely comprised of RPGs! Now, they are lucky if they can find one or two to add, and it's not only disappointing, it's a little worrisome.

Not to me. I've had a great time with Folklore, Valkyria Chronicles, and Disgaea 3. That's all I've needed so far, and more are on the way.

Chris3993998d ago (Edited 3998d ago )

For Japanophiles like myself, I haven't been impressed with entries from any of the home consoles with a few exceptions: Valkyria, Lost Odyssey, Folklore and Eternal Sonata. Vesperia, I'm kind of on the fence with, as it was Tales of the Abyss in HD, with a terribly boring plot - but it sure looked pretty! Tales on the Wii is kind of fun though, and has a kitschy monster-breeding (Pokemonish) element.

This generation, the handhelds are the only thing feeding the starved JRPG populace.

Things should turn around soon though. Remember, it takes years to make a decent RPG; it wasn't until the third year and beyond of the PS2's cycle that we started to seem some real gems.

Edit @ TheHater (comment #3). WKC is definitely on my radar, I've been waiting for this game since it was announced. Day one purchase.

el_bandito3998d ago

seems like sony's giving its priorities to the other genres. Its different now, releasing RPGs is getting riskier production-wise, target market-wise and of course sales-wise. I believe the present industry does not have the abundance of rpg developers which release games seemingly in great abandon--- the one it had back then during the PS1-PS2 era. You could find a bunch of really good rpgs then, and piles of crappy ones too. Now, I hate to admit this but it seems like everyone's banking on FF again.

Simon_Brezhnev3998d ago

naw i recall sony said they working on 5 rpgs at the moment

TOO PAWNED3998d ago

that's what Silogon claimed...

GWAVE3998d ago

I'll take the few JRPGs on the PS3 to the crappy JRPGs that the 360 has been getting.

Arnon3998d ago

Was there even a PURPOSE to mention the 360? I seriously can not believe some of you. You seem so desperate to prove that you bought the PS3 and that no game on any other console would be worth it.

I, personally.. would choose the multitude of JRPGs on the 360 over 3 good RPGs.

Star Ocean: The Last Hope
Tales Of Vesperia
Lost Odyssey
Blue Dragon
Infinite Undiscovery (I would rate it about a 7.5)
Final Fantasy XI

But the cool news.. is that I own BOTH. So I don't have to choose lulz.

SaiyanFury3998d ago

I will agree that JRPGs are few and in between so far, but they're coming. JRPGs take a long time to make as Japanese developers often like to make their games from scratch with a completely blank canvas. This often leads to increased development time. Also, with the 360 launching a full year ahead of the PS3, a lot of the games showing up on the system are simply the result of that. You notice that games like Eternal Sonata inevitably show up on the PS3 at some point after the 360. I waited for the PS3 version of Eternal Sonata as I knew it would be coming out and surely enough, it did. Also on the PS3 version, I have a DTS audio track that wasn't available on the 360 and with my powerful home theatre, I love it. I'm also playing Valkyria Chronicles, and had my time with Disgaea. I've ordered Demon's Souls from Hong Kong as I'm a huge fan of the King's Field series. The RPGs WILL come, but we must be patient. Bring on Star Ocean 4 on the PS3! :D

kwicksandz3998d ago

It is worrying to see what was once the playstation bread and butter practically non existant this gen. Since the PS controller is not the best for genres such as FPS you would think that they would make games that are well suited such as RPG and where they have a history of past success.

callahan093998d ago

Why so many disagrees on my comment? What is it that you don't believe me on? Oh, I know, I actually hated Folklore, Valkyria Chronicles, and Disgaea 3. Oh wait no I didn't. Oh, this must be it: I've been absolutely DYING to play some more RPG's, those just haven't been enough for me! Oh, oh wait, no that's not true either. I'm not much of an RPG-o-phile. I like some, mostly the strategic ones or the sort of Pokemon-esque ones. Like Folklore, for instance, or Persona... where you can collect numerous creatures and take them into battle with you... this creature collection aspect mixed with strategy/grid battle mechanics is precisely the combination of features that makes my favorite traditional JRPG of this generation so far Enchanted Arms, despite the fact that most people crap on it. But mostly I'm into puzzle games, platformers, and shooters, and I've had no shortage of any of that to play. So, no, I'm not disappointed with the PS3's library. Especially not it's RPG library with great strategy RPG's, great multiplatform RPG's like Enchanted Arms and Eternal Sonata, and great WPRG's like Fallout 3 and Oblivion. So maybe you all disagree that "more RPG's are coming?" Well, gee whiz, that can't be it either, because there is White Knight Chronicles, Demon's Souls, Final Fantasy XIII & VSXIII, and blah blah blah. Disagree all you want, but I'll know it's because you don't want to accept that someone is happy with their PS3 and not because there's anything to ACTUALLY disagree with.

slayorofgods3997d ago

If your really going to list infinite undiscover and the ps2 port of Final Fantasy 11 on your list of good 360 RPG's I am not going to buy into the 360 has good rpg's argument. RPG fans should be comparing the PSP vs. Nintendo DS because that is where all the good RPG's are at this generation. Both the PS3 and 360 get blown away by these hand held systems in comparison.

But looking at the sales of every JRPG this gen, you'll quickly realize why Sony aren't investing much money into the genre.

The main problem is,JRPGS have failed to evolve in gameplay and story telling.Very few JRPGS have tried something new, which is why the number of high quality JRPGS this gen is like 2.

Anyways,it sucks for JRPG only companies like Square Enix, since every single project they've released has crashed and burned.

Kouzmich3998d ago

I really don't want to sound like fan boy , but there is no other way to say it.
Yes most JRPGS sold poor , question stands wy ?
They are releasing them for the wrong console. M$ thought they would attract more new ppl from PS2 era to 360 by giving them JRPG's. But ppl who bought 360 are more interested in FPS , as the Xbox was known for.
Same thing can be said about SONY , lost and lots of FPS and only couple of RPG's.
I don't mind the change of these things , because I was only playing JRPG's on PS1 and PS2 and some random FPS like MoH and Siphon Filter.

PooEgg3998d ago

I would love to see SquareEnix release an exclusive JRPG on the PS3, just to see how it will sale. If it sold well, maybe that would keep the door open to JRPGs. Even though I love my 360 a whole lot, I am very concerned about the poor sales of 360 JRPGs and the fact that it will hurt the JRPGs chance, and it might leave us with only FPS and Fallout clones. Although Fallout is an excellent game, I don't want to see the market flooded with western RPGs, the character art is just too damn ugly for my taste, I still cringe when I think of marrying any of the fuggly characters in Fable 2.

On the other hand, although I am certain a lot of you will disagree with me, I do not think the RPGs that SE released on the 360 are bad games at all. I think the problem was that the reviewers were brutal, and that kept a lot of people away. From what I have noticed reader reviews are much more forgiving, and I would rather trust the regular gamer to the jaded professional reviewer. I also think that expectations for each new JRPG runs too high, and so people get disappointed when the game isn't the the 2nd coming of FFVII.

Because I love JRPGs a lot, I think about this subject a lot, I really wish for a come back, but I just don't see that happening, so in the meanwhile I will keep buying whatever is available, and enjoying it for what it is.

TapiocaMilkTea3998d ago

If MS continues to get more JRPGs than Sony, eventually their roles will switch. Maybe not this gen, but next gen MS will be the RPG console and Sony will be the FPS console. Seems like it takes one gen for the transition because Sony was the RPG console for 10 years before the PS3.

slayorofgods3997d ago

SE needs to step up their game. The main reason that they haven't developed for the PS3 is because they can't, plain and simple. I've read articles about SE developers complaining about developing for the PS3. To me this shows a lack of talent. Although, I didn't like infinite Undiscover, I will admit SO4 is probably a good game. But I will never buy this game out of spite that I thought the developers were being weak and not bringing the game to the PS3 because that would be too challenging. Developers like this don't deserve praise. But I agree with you that JRP's are a better style then WRPG's and I am still hopeful that a good JRPG's will be made for the 360/PS3. Here's to hoping that final fantasy 13 finally delivers.

Duoma3997d ago

I have to wholeheartedly agree with kou. It's not about the story at all. Look at shooters, they continue to sell well despite the cookie cutter space marine/military type vs aliens or the 60th world war2 remake. Hell, games like madden which do nothing but recylce rosters and throw in one or two new features still sell well.

I think its just like kou said plain and simple.

TheHater3998d ago

forgetting White Knight? Just base on videos alone, I can honestly say that White Knight is the best JRPG to come out this so far this generation.

Homicide3998d ago

RPGFan, one of the most respected sites for RPG reviews, gave WKC a 70. Looks like it won't be the best.

Lord Xire3998d ago

Actually it probably is the worst...

TrooGamer3998d ago

So WKC worse than IU and Last Remnant? At least they ried to add something different with WKC by adding online mode

Arnon3998d ago

I would just put Infinite Undiscovery. The Last Remnant isn't exclusive anyways.

Lucreto3998d ago (Edited 3998d ago )

In all fairness he reviewed the Japanese version we don't know how the English version will do.

Level 5 have used epic voice actors in previous games so that should improve the score a little.

RPG fan gave Suikoden 2 80-84%
Dark Cloud 70-83%
Final Fantasy XII 97%

I wouldn't take his reviews to heart.

JOEdANGEL3998d ago

I too was extremely excited for it as it was being developed by level 5. After seeing the game in action though, I must say i was quite disappointed. I will likely still play this when it comes out, but I probably won't buy it.

Duoma3997d ago

lol , based off video footage everyone said the same thing about Lair until they played it.

Even though I spent over 100 hours with Disgaea 3, love Valkyria Chronicles and Eternal Sonata, yes, the lack of RPGs is indeed disturbing. I actually bought a 360 to feed my need for RPGs. However, there are plenty of RPGs in the not too distant future - White Knight Chronicles, Cross Edge, Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, and Demon's Edge.

For all of those people who only own a PS3, don't worry, you'll get your share of RPG goodness soon enough. Plus there are some RPGs on PSN for those who haven't played enough or any old school RPGs - Wild Arms and Suikoden.

ThatCanadianGuy3998d ago

Yes ! Suikoden is amazing ! Everyone should play that.
It's only 5$ too!

ThatCanadianGuy3998d ago

If the rumors are true, then we'll hear a few RPG's announced this year.

Tears for blood
New Legend Of Dragoon

Myst3998d ago

A new legend of Dragoon would be awesome if that rumor is true :)

Chris3993998d ago

New Wild Arms.

And I will be in bliss.

ChozenWoan3998d ago (Edited 3998d ago )

LoD would be killer, The first was almost on par with FF at the time.

Also, the reason most RPGs these days have below avg sales is due to the Wii type kiddy appearance of the games. They all seem to be cell shaded with some little spiky haired kid as the main hero/heroin. I just wish both MS and Sony would give me an adult based RPG to sink my teeth... and wallet into.

I'm tired of the Wii Sims type of RPGs we are being feed...
I need something with some meat on it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
