Is the Xbox 360 relying too heavily on Halo games?

"The original trilogy of Halo games is as good a series of games as there has ever been, possibly even rivaling the Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid franchises. But the recently released Halo Wars and forthcoming Halo 3: ODST could signal an over-reliance on Halo's good name on the part of Microsoft.

This generation's console war is far from over. The Nintendo Wii probably won't get caught, although I do think sales will slow down a lot, possibly sooner than we think. Second place, on the other hand, is still up for grabs, with a few more years left yet for the PS3 and Xbox 360 to fight it out for the runner-up spot."

I wonder how long Microsoft can bank off of Halo. Its not their only game, but is certainly their top selling title.

How long can Sony depend on idiot fanboys?

Sounds like a rhetorical question to me.

*looks at Nintendo and Mario*

Nope, there are only 2 Halo games on the 360 right now

And only 1 of them is the FPS Halo, Halo makes HUGE amount of $$$ so why wouldnt they rely on it, no one seems to be complaining

SL1M DADDY4006d ago

But Gears as well. Having scored GTA on the platform also helped and when FFXIII hits, we will find yet another reason that the 360 is selling fairly well. In the end however, it would seem that MS rely on fewer games to hit higher sales and Sony rely on a larger amount of games that make fewer dollars and sales. In the end it all comes out to look a bit even, perhaps only leaning a bit more towards Sony.

caladbolg7774006d ago (Edited 4006d ago )

Why not rely on Halo? Developing a Halo title, no matter how sloppy, is like printing money. Halo Wars is a pretty half-assed, trashy title, but it's still selling phenomenally for a console RTS. As long as gaming noobs continue to lap up the gravy, MS will keep cooking it up. More power to them.

FreeMonk4006d ago

Halo 3 compared to Halo 3: ODST will be around a 2 year gap. Gears of War compared to Gears of War 2 was a 2 year gap.

Look at Sony with games like Resistence and Motor Storm, both have sequals, and both came out with around a 2 year gap. Even Drakes Fortune and Drake Fortune 2 have around a 2 year gap.

Yeah, Microsoft obviously show that Halo 3 is there main console seller, but Halo is for MS what Mario is for Nintendo.

Sony I think hasn't got that. Yeah it's got MGS, God of War, Drake etc, but if you went to a big group of console junkies and told them to say the first thing that comes to mind when you say Nintendo....a huge majority would say Mario, and the same goes for MS (although I think that'd be split between Halo and RROD!!)

Sony doesn't have that, unless I'm being dumb and not noticing the obvious.

AKNAA4006d ago

I have to agree with omega4, when it comes to microsoft and halo, its nothing compared to what nintendo is doing with the mario series! I swear, if its about relying on a certin Game(mario!) all its life, it'll be Nintendo hands down!
hell, I lost track of how many mario games have been out since the snes!

pumpkinpunker4006d ago (Edited 4006d ago )

It's also nothing compared to what Konami does with the Metal Gear series or what Square does with Final Fantasy or what Nintendo does with Zelda. This console generation there are two Halo games. there are also two Ratchet and Clank games, two Gears of War games, and two Resistance games, etc.

How this article even got written boggles the mind, oh wait...

it's Gamer.Blorge

they're a joke.

otherZinc4006d ago

This is an attempt to sour the Halo Franchise by a scared fanboy. There have been 4 Halo games across 2 platforms over 8 or 9 years for 1 console maker. Thats a nice spread.

Guess what, companies always remake their most popular brands & give minor improvements along the way. M$ & BUNGIE give major improvements on the series with each iteration.

Those of us(10 million screaming fans each iteration) that are familiar with the Halo Universe know there are many intriguing stories to be told, Forerunners, Flood, Spartans (where are they), Brutes, Elites, How did all this start?

I cant wait for the rest of the story to be told.

Forget the Haters M$ & BUNGIE, 10million+ are anxiously awaiting the rest of the story. Thank you, now get back to work!

pixelsword4006d ago (Edited 4006d ago )

Nintendo can have mario for more than twenty years, but the Halo franchise being on the 360 is Microsoft "relying too heavily" on the series.

Mario is the biggest one-trick pony in videogames history.

GWAVE4006d ago (Edited 4006d ago )

I don't know if they're relying on it as far as the console itself goes (there are certainly other games to buy on the 360), but when it comes to their PR and marketing they act as if Halo is the ONLY game worth playing. I'd like Microsoft to flaunt some of that supposed "innovation and variety" they always brag about. It's hard to believe that statement when their three biggest exclusives are a first-person Space Marine shooter, a third-person Space Marine shooter, and a third-person RPG that also a third-person Space Marine shooter.

Three genres, one overall theme.

No its not. Sony knows when they release MGS games a whole lot of people are going to buy it. Same for GoW and GT5 etc etc.

even nintendo does that. Mario , zelda and all that.

why cant MS ?

Party Boy4007d ago

I think the point is that Microsoft doesn't have a lot of first party studios and them relying on Halo and not investing in a lot of other new ips like Sony does could damage them or the Halo franchise.

LastDance4007d ago

I think he was more talking about...relying ONLY on halo games.

Godmars2904006d ago

Because they've already tired to copy everyone else's franchises? Which is wrong.

That is to say they've paid 3rd parties to copy someone else's franchise. Two in the case of Forza and their other racing game. Just like Splinter Cell was in response to MGS and Lost Odyssey the 360's answer to FF.

Why is it so hard to believe that such a company would take something "original" - which was in development before their 1st console - and run it into the ground?

Agreed Hiruma.

dalibor4007d ago (Edited 4007d ago )

But you have to remember that there was only one halo title released for the 360 thats a fps so far. Halo wars is not a fps. Its not like MS is releasing a Halo ever year. Also take in consideration that there have been how many Metal Gear Solid games, & two MGS titles came out during the Ps2's life. Same thing with Gran Turismo, & soon to be Twisted Metal(I hope). Is this a bad thing? No especially if you like the game(s) from a certain title. Is MS relying to much on Halo? I would say its in the middle. But MS sure better get their head straight & release some first party games that can coexist with Halo + Gears Of War games. Agree? Disagree? State what ya think. Dalibor out.
