T3 Review: Empire: Total War

The award winning Total War series has long been a jewel in the PC real time strategy crown, but its latest iteration has taken the series into a bold new era – the 18th Century – and has escalated the sheer scale of it all to utterly epic proportions, while somehow managing to retain the kind of accessibility that see many RTS franchises running for the consoles.

I have just started the grand campaign mode, and this game is so in-depth that I don't think I will be playing anything else for months.

This game is a masterpiece, but I still haven't got complete understanding of navel combat. Practice makes perfect.

The only other niggle I have is moving groups around sometimes in battle can be frustrating as they don't always position the troops in the fashion I want. Again, just the learning curve.

All in all, I can't see how this game doesn't easily take GOTY. The last game to even come close to Empire is Fallout 3, and that game is nowhere as fun as this game.

The firestorm of complaints is very real, and that worries me.

I'm also unhappy with the publishers business model of giving "extra" units in a more expensive version of the game. I want the FULL version, but it isn't work 70 bucks right now.

As with all PC games though, I expect I can pick up and enjoy the special forces edition for about 40 dollars in 6 months. The main problems with the game will be ironed out with patches, and I'll be ready to buy.

AgentVX,

GOTY you say? Sadly, this masterpiece wont be getting that award. Apparently, I hear, PC gaming is dead....hmmm...

Heya, you do know that if you hold down the right mouse button and drag the cursor you can angle and form the currently selected unit?

I agree anyway, this game is a masterpiece. The most in depth game imaginable.
