Yakuza & Star Ocean: The battle of the sub-HD resolutions

Gamezine writes: "Two new Japanese games coming to two different consoles. Both feature lower than high-definition resolutions, but the question is which game comes out on top?

Yakuza 3 (Ryu ga Gotoku 3) is the latest PlayStation 3 action game from SEGA, following the adventures of Kiryu Kazuma, a former member of an organised crime group - or a Yakuza."

I mean when you are playing either one of them, will you be think oh man that game had a higher resolution than this one?

L-a-i-n3528d ago

It is sad really, but people will do it. I so want to play Yakuza the game just looks great. I think Sega pulled out a good title.

TheHater3528d ago

Yeah, the game look great and look fun. That why I am hoping it makes it way to the states.

CrazzyMan3528d ago (Edited 3528d ago )

Because for Image, vertical resolution is MORE important than horizontal.
So it`s more like 768p > 720p for human`s EYE.

While 496p, come on... is there even a battle? lol.
Not to mention, what was promised for SO4:
And what we got:
It`s just HORRIBLE!

p.s. For the second time i see bias from that uk site. First time they tried to downplay KZ2, now they are comparing resolutions of SO4 and Yakuza 3, like they would be on same level, while in reality, Yakuza 3 has better native resolution for a human`s eye. That site should be banned here.

mintaro3528d ago

have you seen SO4? It's stunning. But none of this really matters if they both look good. So stop your pixel counting and enjoy the damn games.

mastiffchild3528d ago

Thing is as a very big SO fan and having seen the review code I don't see the game as a fitting follower in the trad of the first two(out again on PSP and even better)but more along the lines of the slightly lacking SO3.
Not 360 bashing as I truly think PS3 will see this game at some point but whi8le the cutsc enes and normal gameplay are pretty the combat seems jerky and fugly becauise of tech issues beyond the res.
On the other hand Yakuza3 looks pretty solid all the way through from, what I've seen of the minis and fighting so far(though in fairness I've seen way more of SO4). If Sega get this out sooner rather than later in the west they WILL have a success on their hands judging from the number of PS3 owners(among others) not happy with GTA4 and pining for the busy nostalgia of GTA:SA.
IMO, the issues with SO4 are very little to do with resolution and more to do with framerates and technical bugs elsewhere not to mention the story not being as good as we came to expect-it just feels rushed but I can't see any prospective port being any better seeing SE arte pretty into MS right now and won't want to show them up in any way.Oh, whatever, it's late now and I was pi55ed off at the last SO and feel this continues down that cul-de-sac story wise no matter what console it's on first (or exclusively). What I say styill sytands though as wherte I would give the first two games 9/10 I'd give both 3 and 4 a 7.5 at best.

Doppy3528d ago

You can see the jaggies in screen shots, but how noticeable or hurt to the game is this when your playing. Since the answer is most likely no effect then what's the point. Yakuza 3 looks great, and so does SO4

gameplayer3528d ago (Edited 3528d ago )

Actually, a human eye with 20/20 acuity is capable of resolving 60 arc-minutes per degree in any direction. It is not capable of resolving greater arc-minutes along the vertical axis as compared to the horizontal axis at all as you imply. The most important measure for what the eye is able to percieve is pixel density across a given surface area where greater pixel density is always better (1280x720 has 17% greater pixel density). As an aside, the size of your display and distance your eye is from the display has a direct correlation with the pixel density required before the difference becomes imperceptible.

Furthermore, every time an image is scaled, visual artifacts are introduced. If you have a 1280x720 display, then a 1280x720 source is optimal and any other resolution (even higher resolutions but especially lower resolutions) will be scaled introducing visual artifacts. If you have a 1920x1080 display then both a 1280x720 and 1024x768 resolution will be scaled on both axes and in both cases visual artifacts will be introduced but one of the two in both cases will introduce another visual artifact further degrading it which leads me to...

Lastly, the 1280x720 resolution is a native 16:9 aspect image whereas a 1024x768 image is a native 4:3 aspect. The 1024x768 image will first need to be stretched to a 16:9 aspect image before it is scaled to it's final resolution introducing a second compounded visual artifact. I say compounded because the stretching of the image will introduce visual artifacts then the scaling of the streched image will introduce further visual artifacts on top of the stretching artifacts essentially magnifying the former artifacts.

I guess what I am saying is that I call total, complete and utter bs on your comment.

MiloGarret3527d ago

Wow, I have never seen ownage so bad...

CrazzyMan3525d ago

Of`course all games are UPSCALED by your TV, any image is scaled to
1366×768 on HD ready TVs or 1920x1080 on Full HD TVs.

Now just RTFM -
HD is defined in terms of vertical resolution, so anything above 720 "lines" is HD. If you are displaying 720p or 1080i material on your set, it is technically HD.

While the form factor of your monitor is 16:9, the ratio of pixels is 4:3, so the grid formed by four pixels is rectangular (larger horizontally) instead of square. This essentially means that 1366 "dots" of horizontal information are being mapped into 1024 displayed dots, but the width of the picture remains the SAME.
1024 x 768 widescreen panels achieve their widescreen characteristic by utilising rectangular pixels which Windows does not support. This means that 1:1 pixel mapping is simply not possible with 1024 x 768 widescreen panels connected to a PC.

To get around this issue, you would first need to deliberately choose a widescreen (16:9) aspect ratio on your PC’s graphics card (to make the aspect ratio of the sending device match the receiving device); then let the scaling function of the plasma display panel do the pixel conversion (pixel mapping) between the two.

Many media players support selecting an aspect ratio, so they will squish the image vertically. When the image is stretched due to the plasma's non-square pixels, you end up with the CORRECT aspect.

How many times are you going to post the same sh!t?

Says you3528d ago (Edited 3528d ago )

And Yakuza 3 was 496p and 768p which of course Yakuza 3 is 768p and Star Ocean IV is 496p and how can such a simple JRPG like star Oceaon IV be 496p? even White knight chronicles is 1080p!?!

ah 360 man MGS4 had higher resolution then that I forgot what it was but it was somewhere in 7xxp and it was not sub HD and sub HD would be Star Ocean IV 496p or Halo 3 640p or Ninja Gaiden II 540p.

360 man3528d ago

woah so mgs4 really is sub HD resolution

Gue13528d ago (Edited 3528d ago )

Why you say...?

Oh I see, I didn't knew that(*reads from the article). And BTW why I have a disagree? I was just asking for god's sake! How can you be in your right mind and disagree with a question? It's simply impossible!

Now the explanation. With this you can disagree... This is something I found on the AVS forums.

HD = 1280 x 720

MGS4 = 1024 x 768
that resolution is better considering that the vertical resolution of all the LCD tv's(not monitors) is 768. Most gamers use LCD tv for gaming so it's a benefit at the end(for those that use LCD displays).

Higher vertical resolutions make the image look better than the Horizontal...

kazuma3528d ago (Edited 3528d ago )

didn't stop it from receiving more goty awards than any 360 exclusive. ZING

360 man3528d ago

your absolutely insane wiimaniac if u think 1024x768 is better than 1280x720

most HD TVs are widescreen 16:9 or 16:10,

1024x768 is for normal standard TVs 4:3

wat its doin in most HD TVs, is its streching the picture out horizontally so the image would look somewhat blurred.

but 720p matches the HD TV line for line.

Information Minister3528d ago (Edited 3528d ago )

Most "FULL HD" screens display the picture @ 1920x1080.

Most "HD READY" (720p only) screens display the picture @ 1366x768.

Also when a game is rendered in a non-standard resolution (as is the case with many PS3 games that render in 960x1080), what happens is that the original image is distorted when it is produced in the frame buffer and it is then scaled to fill the whole screen in the intended aspect ratio. So, as you see, the final image does not "look somewhat blurred" and 720p does not "match the HD TV line for line".

Well since you said "ANY" exclusive than you my friend are completely wrong. The first Gears swept the year with more GOTY awards than any ps3 game ever. 2008 went to a mix of games like LBP, Gears 2, Fable 2, Fallout 3, and MGS4.

wow so many awards for 360 exclusives hahahaha (no really, they're so few it's not even funny)
get over it, fable 2 and gow2 didn't win sh*t. why? because they sucked ass just like gow1 and fable 1.
mgs4 and lbp and gta4 and fallout3 were the true winners of 2008. see what i did there? that's two ps3 exclusives and two multiplatform games. as for gow1...i called it before it happened. gow1 only had those goty awards because the 360 was alone in the market, with only the ps2 kicking it's ass in wonder gow1 got so many goty awards, if it's such a good title why didn't gow2 stand up to mgs4, lbp, fallout 4, gta4? hahahaha get over it gow sucks ass...die in a fire will you?

i liked the skill things in yakauza probably a great game its the first yakauza i play

LeonSKennedy4Life3528d ago

Well, I'm glad to hear only one of the graphics was bad. Otherwise, I wouldn't be importing this.

militant073527d ago

i didn't understand a word because i don't speak Japanese, not because the graphic was horrible
