PlayStation 3 to Support HDMI 1.3

The seven HDMI Founder companies (Hitachi, Ltd., Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. (Panasonic), Royal Philips Electronics, Silicon Image, Inc., Sony Corp., Thomson, Inc. and Toshiba Corp.) today released a major enhancement of the High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) specification, the de facto standard digital interface for high definition consumer electronics. HDMI 1.3 will enable the next generation of HDTVs, PCs and DVD players to transmit and display content in billions of colors with unprecedented vividness and accuracy.

The HDMI 1.3 specification more than doubles HDMI’s bandwidth and adds support for Deep Color technology, a broader color space, new digital audio formats, automatic audio/video synching capability (“lip sync”), and an optional smaller connector for use with personal photo and video devices. The update reflects the determination of the HDMI founders to ensure HDMI continues evolving ahead of future consumer demands.

The update arrives at a time of strong momentum for the HDMI standard. HDMI Licensing, LLC today announced that more than 400 makers of consumer electronics and PC products worldwide have adopted HDMI. Market researcher In-Stat expects 60 million devices featuring HDMI to ship in 2006.

“PLAYSTATION 3 will be the most advanced computer platform for enjoying a wide range of entertainment content, including the latest games and HD movies, in the home,” said Ken Kutaragi, president and group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc. “By introducing the next-generation HDMI 1.3 technology, with its high speed and deep color capabilities, PS3 will push the boundaries of audiovisual quality to the next level of more natural and smoother expression on the latest large flat panel displays.”

"HDMI is an established cornerstone for the whole High Definition TV industry and Philips is extremely pleased to see such significant improvements for picture and sound quality with this new version,” said Johan van de Ven, CTO and Senior Vice President of Philips Consumer Electronics. “We look forward to continuing to work with other HDMI Founder companies to extend the scope of HDMI across new devices and applications, while remaining entirely committed to ensuring full backward compatibility with existing products."

With the adoption of Deep Color and the xvYCC color space, HDMI 1.3 removes the previous interface-related restrictions on color selection. The interface will no longer be a constraining pipe that forces all content to fit within a limited set of colors, unlike all previous video interfaces.

If Microsoft see's that there is a market for gamers to use the hdmi interface and the 1080p. It can easily be done. They could make an hdmi adapter which they most likely will with the release of the HD dvd player add on...and with another xbox live update, they could ad 1080p as an option for output as well. Its really that simple. They just realize that most people have 1080i televisions right now if they even have hd televisions at all. 5 % of consumers have hd tv's period. They know that 1080p is taboo for 99% of consumers right now. They also know that in about 5 years we will have a better idea of what most people have as far as TV standards and formatt standards...1080p tv's and whether they have hd dvd players or blu ray. Now by that time new game systems will be on its way out. But this is an hd transition period and a very small amount of consumers have truly plunged into the hd era. Sony is basically hoping that people just love sony so much that they will all of a sudden feel like they have to make that jump into the blu ray market and hd tv market. So what sony is hoping on is that because of them. The average Joe consumer will spend 600 plus on a ps3 and 4000 plus on a 1080p tv, and 25 to 45 dollars for blu ray movies, and 70 dollars for 3rd party games. Just out of the blue. Just all of a sudden. What's going to happen is people who want HD gaming but want to ease into it. People will get a 360 when they see the ps3 has no graphical advantage and they see the wide variety of HOT games out before christmas and how they can interact with their cell phones and their home computers via Live Anywhere. Then when they feel its time they will get a hd tv. Then when they feel its time they will get the hd dvd add on if they want to watch high def movies. Microsoft doesn't force you to spend 6000 dollars to enter the hd generation. They ease you into it knowing that most people just can't afford it. And with a price drop by christmas it will be that much easier. Think about it.

read my other post. HDMI 1.3 just means a new version of HDMI. Like going from MSN ver. 7 to MSN ver. 7.5. Its the same thing, just with added features within the program. So in HDMI's case, added features within the cable to the tv

Its the cable that improves the HDMI from w/e it was to 1.3. Has nothing to do with upgrading tv's with HDMI input already, or getting new tv's. HDMI 1.3 is simply just a new cable that transfers HD Multimedia stuff, faster, brighter and better than the original cable could. (Dont quote me on this, im just taking a guess oh thats the way it will be upgraded, so if im wrong, dont spam or flip out on me)

Last month you told me that the PS3's HDMI-less tard-pack was just as good as the $600 version and that it was gonna do everything the other one could too. In fact I seem to recall a lot of heated discussions on internet forums about the relative merits of HDMI for both next-gen gaming and for HD-DVD or Blu-Ray movies at full resolution.

But what a lot of you don't understand is that if Mircrosoft felt like they needed to sell hdmi 1.3 connectors for the 360...they would and it wouldn't be hard for them to do. the fact of the matter is right now only 5 % of consumers have a hd tv and an even smaller amount have hdmi connectors on their tv's. i was thinking. All these things that sony is hyping like hdmi and blue ray for the ps3 as well as some other things sounds fine and dandy and when one ps fan was saying, MS wont have those things in it. I was like why is that? Does it matter? And i came to the conclusion that it dont matter, because of the timing. by the time they do matter it'll be in five years or so and it'll all be in the next system where it was suppose to be. by then, hd tv's will be a lot more common and hd dvd may even be the format winner and then The next MS console could incorporate it and just have a kick @ss console. I on the other hand feel Sony's timing couldn't be better. If you havent experienced a big screen HDTV with 1080p then you have no idea what you are missing. Just think "if" you could play Oblivion in this type of resolution... one word "amazing". HDTV's are picking up in sales much faster than expected and PS3 giving gamers the option to play thier games and movies on these types of TV's WILL improve gaming. Also Sony is making this console future proof as much as possible which is defintely a good thing. The life span of PS3 will be 10 years while 360 will be outdated in 3-4 more years (like the oringnal XBOX's have become). If M$ hadn't been so obsessed with launching first they could have given gamers the option to play there games in stunning 1080p. Just think, at around the holidays when pople come to Best Buy, Walmart, Fry's, ect ect and see PS3 games running on BIG SCREEN HDTV's in 1080p next to 360's on 720p they will see a major differnce. Games like Heavenly Sword will truly be "heavenly" on crystal clear TV's in the center of the store. Better sound to give you even greater gaming experience, All this is great timing and in my case just what the doctor ordered. I can't wait to play games in the best experience possible for many years to come. Novemeber just can't come fast enough for me.

I think that overstates the importance of 1080p and also ignores the fact that 95% of the population couldn't tell a difference between 720p and 1080p in the first place.

What most, non-videophile people know about video resolution and quality calibrations could fit in a pocket cheat sheet. In other words, the VAST majority of people are currently watching non-calibrated TVs with the COntrast amped up and the colors completely screwed up because THAT is how it came out of the showroom.

To give these same masses credit for actually being able to tell the difference between 720p on a native 720p display and 1080p is going a bit too far. I am quite sure that you could tell the difference, and probably a good many people on this and other forums as well, but the general population walking into a store and telling the difference? Fat chance. They are going to walk in and see the two set-ups at retail and think the following:

1) Dammmmn - $400?!?!?!
2) Holy SH!T - $600 ?!?!?!?!?!?!
3) Those games don't really look that much different from each other..

And then they will make their decision to either:

A) Buy the PS3 only,
B) Buy a PS3 to go with their XB360
C) Buy a 360 and forget the PS3
D) Forget both and buy somethign else like a Wii or a new video card for a PC

What will NOT happen is the unwashed masses suddenly turning into videophiles and learning the value of increased resolution (which is essentially LOST after a certain seating distance is achieved anyway, depending on the overall resolution of course) or for that matter the value of a calibrated display...

No, HDMI for PS3 cannot possibly be terribly important or they would not be offering up the tard-pack at $500, if it were really as important as Ken and Co. say, then there would only be one SKU - the $600 PS3 - which in essence is what we all suspected all along anyway.

What we have here is a case of either Sony lying about the viability of their $500 offering or over-exaggerating the vallue of HDMI for gaming purposes. I would say it is more likely the latter....

Most developers aren't utilizing that because it takes away from the framerate. And the the price of making a game for 1080p is outrageous. So maybe 2 games. The rest are 720 p. lol....And don't be surprised if those two turn out to just use 720 p or 1080i to get the frame rate up to speed.

When I bought the TV there were at least 10-15 other people/families there asking questions and very interested in purchasing one. I hate to hear you speak about our country like "everyone is struggling" and no one could afford it.... please be serious HDTV's are selling fast, the proof is right there in the store, go and take a look around inside your local Best Buy especially before major sporting events and see how many people are interested, I think you will be surprised.

Again nice info but is this "FACT" or your opinions? can I have the link you got this info from? Anyone can say what they think developers are going to utilize, I mean if they don't utilize this advantage than that's just a waste. Please support you claim by giving a source please.

well i have'nt done research on the net or have links and pages for you and yes i was stating my opinions on the matter but much of what i was saying is pretty much common sense.
People didnt catch on to dvd players right away, they always wait for price drops before it actaully becomes one with the masses. Once the items become affordable for most thats when sales really take off, and with the blue ray disc players it'll be the same thing. Now let me add this note as well. I used to work at circuit city for like maybe 3 years maybe 4. And i remember seeing the first flat screen plasma tv's. They were veeeery expensive and the only way customers can have them as if they ordered we didnt even keep them on the floor. And they were like 10k and better. Now you'll walk in any circuit city or best buy and various stores and see them allll over and can get them for as low as 2k. See what im saying. Its pretty much life that's taught me this and its just common sense. No ordinary joe was going to spend 10k on a tv, guess what people are smarter these days they know that products get cheaper in price and better in quality. And yes there are some who embrace right away but remember im speakinig about the masses. When the average person on a budget and with families start to embrace the new technology its usually been out for a while and have gone done significantly in price. There are plasma tv's out now for like 3k and is much better than some of the original plasma screens that were 10k and higher and with longer life to them. guess what, its more people with the 3k one than with the 10k and higher. Once again im going with common sense and experience on this one.

im with you on what your saying please dont misunderstand me. But I just know that there are many people who are interested in these type of items but the truth is they just cant afford them right now. I also own serval high def tv's im my home. I have a 40" in the basement and several 32" one's in other parts of the house. Yeah their are people who can afford this stuff especially since the prices have gone down a great deal and they are making them nicer but for many the prices are still way to high. I don't live in a one sided world i know, and speak to many people in different financial classes. And there are a great mass of people who really can't afford to pay for a high def tv, ps3 and all that stuff with bills, families, and their budget is concerned im not saying every one is poor and no one can afford it, i was just speaking up for people who can't because i know this to be true.

I thought about it and all I can say is what "I" will do. I don't know/care what the casual gamer "will" do when the PS3 launches. All I can say is I see a major advantage of PS3 because I have 1080p. I know for a fact that I'm not the only one, and by the time 360 comes with a HDMI adatpter it may be way to late. There you go. Too late for a hdmi adapter? lol... the hd dvd ad on releases September. Two months before the ps3 is suppose to launch. And did you know only 2 games are confirmed to possibly use 1080p and those are still up in the air. You will take the plunge. I will too. We are the very small few that will. Which will hurt me and you in the end because developers aren't going to get much reward for spending more money and having a small user base. Thats been my point. Thats where I think Sony messed up. They are making a system for the elite small few and not the masses. When you do that you turn off developers because developers want to know the user base is enough for them to actually make their money back and make a profit. I know you understand that. If the ps3 would have came out at 400 dollars...the next gen war would be a little more interesting. But Sony is forgetting who made them number 1 the last two generations. Here is how me and you are different. You pledge allegence to SONY. I pledge allegence to GAMES. I don't say Mcdonalds is the best so I'm never eating burger king or Wendy's food. Burger king sucks. Wendy's sucks. I'm the guy that tries it all and enjoys what different places have to offer. I like Burger Kings Onion rings. But I like Mcdonalds fries. I like Wendy's burgers. But for some reason SONY fans seem to be close minded and limit themselves from having fun and enjoying whats out there. And thats sad to me. Sony fans who Pledge Allegance to sony miss out on a lot of fantastic gaming. Even IGN ps3 says that they recommend any sony fan on getting an xbox 360 and a ps3 if they can. Because if you just get a ps3 you will be missing out on some unbelievalbe exclusive content. And did you know only 2 games are confirmed to possibly use 1080p and those are still up in the air.

Why are you so worried about if Assassins creed is coming to the 360? Whats the problem? If it is "great for 360 fans" Right? If you aren't getting a 360...don't worry about it right? You have choices.

I'm not biased. I love games. Pc games, 360 games, ect. I have a ps2 and I was very very dissapointed.

I said those are the only two I play. I have gamefly and I also own GRAW but I haven't played another game I feel is worth my 60$. After I bought GRAW I told myself I will not pay more for less. Honestly me my family and friends play and enjoy our psp's and ps2's much more than the 360. FNR3 is awsome though especially in HD.

These statment offend me, to make these statements about me and my experiences I have had defending OUR country is crazy....
