PS3 price cuts not expected until 2009

A Dow Jones report has analyzed Sony's current status and confirms that price cuts may not come for another two years.

"Although analysts say price reductions would benefit PS3 sales, Sony isn't likely to make any price cuts for at least another two years, said Kimberly Otzman, a spokeswoman for Sony Computer Entertainment America. She noted a similar time frame for lowered prices for the PS2. 'We probably expect the same for PS3,' Otzman said, adding that while the console's price is higher than competitors', it comes completely packaged so consumers don't have to buy extra equipment or attachments."

But this is discouraging news for those waiting for a lower price point. Seriously, this could hurt Sony, especially if MS commences with not just one, but potentially two price cuts by the time Sony manages a reduction. This holiday season, with systems readily available, may force Sony's hand early if they don't see significant sales by the end of the year. My .02 worth.

I mean the PS3 just launched ....how can they possibly be thinking price cut anytime soon? 2yrs is pretty standard to really the of 2008 / begining of 2009 would be the earliest anyone should expect it. I think we all forget it just launched given the 360 has been out for over a year and a half now and is looking like they may price cut later this year.

No it's not right.

The competition always should stay within the price range of the direct competitor. If you deliver about the same or less then the cheaper alternative and still have to pay at least 33% more for it, you're doomed.

It doesn't matter if a 2 year cycle is logical. All that matters is that in this year, 2007, the 360 will lower it's price. If Sony follows in 2009 that'll be about 2 years later... The 360 will hit the magic 200 dollar/euro price first, thus attracting the mass of people that buy not above that price. Like the PS2 had the last gen and still is selling strong. Combination of low price and most games available. It's the upwards spiral on the 360 (already more customers to sell to, so getting more games) and the downward spiral on the PS3 (less customers now to sell to, less games, overexpensive, more people staying away and buying the better and cheaper alternative with 360) and so on...

This really sucks. Its understandable to a degree because sony is already taking a huge hit on the consoles they sell...but still. If microsoft cuts the 360's price it will be interesting to see how sony reacts. You'd think that if microsoft does cut their price sony would have to follow suit if they want to compete anymore. Or maybe they will tell us all to "Save up some extra money."

If by the end of Christmas 2007 Sony has not established a solid gain on it's competition, which is unlikely given the price point, then Sony's shareholders may step up to the plate and demand Sony lower the price. Of course this is a double-edged sword. The instant Sony drops it's price Microsoft will also drop it's price, so the ground gained by the drop in price is nullified. It would, however, put the PS3 core system in the reach of joe consumer. Then there is the other serious problem of Sony having to bleed even MORE money on each sale of the PS3.

The is not even including the fact that the Wii is most likely going to sell like hotcakes throughout at least the rest of the year, possibly topping a ten million install base.

The PS3 may not ruin Sony, but I don't see any possible way for Sony to claim the number one spot. The number one spot is very important as it sets the stage for the next generation. If Sony loses it's standing, developers in the future may not even chose to develop for the PS4, or put their hottest games out on the Xbox3 first.

Lastly, it will be quite embarrassing also for Sony if Nintendo's "Super Gamecube" ends up outselling it's Blu-Ray-Cell-Chipped-behemoth

Yesterday, I read news about slashing the price of Sony Blu-ray Players from $999 to $599. Furthermore, slashing cost of change to CELL processor 65nm about 40% and remove EE ship about $30 per unit. That's a great way for Sony to drop the price of PS3 by this Chrismas.

And don't forget, After May until the late this year has many many AA titles that will be release such as Lair, Heavenly Sword, Ninja Gaiden: Sigma, Sing Star, The Eyes of Judgement, Hot shot Golf 5, Devil May Cry 4, GTA IV, Killzone 2, Metal Gear Solid 4, etc. If those titles relese and drop the price of PS3, it will be great for gamers and Sony.

Sony at the 90nm level had extremely horrible cell yields, in the 10-20%. What leads you to believe that shrinking the die to 45nm will solve their yield problems and even if it does, all it means is less of a loss per each PS3 sold. As is stands right now, if by Christmas the yields are good, and the removal of the emotion engine is permanent, then Sony could look to save about $60 on each PS3 by the end of the year. So their loss on each PS3 would be down to about $150-$170. Advances in blue laser diode tech recently will help out with the huge cost of the BR drive also, but not to that great of an extent.

Sony is in a predicament. If they do end up selling 10 million PS3's this year, a roundabout figure of their total losses would be well over One Billion dollars from the Playstation division. A Billion Dollar Loss is going to be very hard to make up via Blu-Ray movies and PS3 game sales.

I don't see Sony lowering the price this year. They are some stubborn Sobs running that company and with all of the company mantra so far "We want people to want to work extra hours to earn the right to buy the PS3," and "Nintendo should take lessons from us," and the fact that they announced no price cuts this year leads me to believe that there will be no price cuts.

I think Sony has lost me this generation.With no games as yet, that would make me take a bank loan to buy ps3 and no prospect of a price cut in the near future, i'm sad to conclude Sony really doesn't want to sell to the average gamer anymore.Oh well, the 360 is no slouch and Microsoft seem to be keen to give me what i want.Still, PS3 would have been nice.

Never thought for one minute PS3's price would drop before the end of 2008-2009, what a mess the PS3 cheap Blu-ray player is out the window!, PS3 just won't have the fanbase to push BR for the long run and Digital Downloads will finsih off Both HD-DVD and Blu-ray(which ever format owner can get the price of the players down first will last the longest).

Sony should have made the PS3 as practical as the other two console's in stead of making it some super out of reach high end divice thats tied to another trojan Horse plot.

Blu-ray made this thing cost too much and Sony wan't people to pay the high price mainly for somthing the masses can't take advantage of.

When somethings so exspemsive it's a hurdle folks don't care what they're getting in a all in one package, folks don't think that way. I won't get into it but I will say Most folks have what i call the credit card mind set that's when people are able to get at least something and don't mind paying extra later.

Lol...Sony would never announce a price-cut until they have put a price-cut otherwise potential buyers are going to hold back. The price will be cut soon enough...well I would think for Europe since they are paying so much for it. I think you amercians have a steal there.

This is why I will be waiting until 2009 or later before getting one.
