Xbox 360 Slim Likely?

GiantGamer debates over the possibility of a new slim version of the Xbox 360.

I just want them to fix the RROD, disk scraching and E7 error dilemmas and then i'll buy a 360. These are the major issues holding me back from buying a 360 and enjoying Gears 1 & 2

they can make a slim model when the PSU is ALREADY OUTSIDE of the unit! that makes no sense.
That's why the slim PS2 is significantly, well, slimmer, because the PSU lays on the floor behind the table or desk or entertainment center.

How can we even talk about a slim sku when the regular sku is still overheating?

I don't know how MS got to this point after making the original xbox which as about as solid as a system could get in terms of reliability. One time my 14 year old cousin actually stepped on my xbox and it worked just fine.

The 360, however, is just laughably faulty. Launch skus, newers skus, elite skus, limited skus, etc keep getting RROD or other problems. I have to pay to play games online? I have to pay to get rechargeable batteries? I have to pay to use MS' standard HDD rather than buy one of my choosing? I have to pay to get a Wifi adapter? Holy smokes.

God help gamers everywhere if Sony does go under like many stories lately are claiming they will. I don't want to game in a world where MS nickle and dimes me on every little thing while simultaneously providing me with a faulty system.

Actually, when you look inside a 360, the biggest part of it is the DVD drive. I mean the heatsink is bloody huge as well, but if jasper (or possibly the next revision) is cool enough, Microsoft could get away with a smaller heatsink. Throw in a laptop DVD-drive and you could definitely slim the whole thing down a bit, the only problem I can see is the hard drive - it'd either need a new design, or stick on the side of it or something.

Contrary to popular belief, the RROD isn't actually caused by OVERheating, it's caused by the constant heating/cooling of the console, which is why bigger heatsinks help (Since it heats up less). If Microsoft could fix the problem at the core (the joints that are coming loose due to this heating/cooling effect), then a slim is definitely possible.

Or hell, they could create an entirely new motherboard design all together.

Fix is don't waste your money in the first place...People buy these machines knowing it's faults and that's where the term xbot truely comes from. I'd be embrassed to buy these( because they melt so frequently) knowing the problems and how outdated it is.

Not saying there wasn't a problem with the hardware but I've never had an issue with mine. I go where the games are and the 360 is it. I'm glad I didn't follow your advice or I would of missed out on some of the greatest gaming I've had in my life.

They have to do something after Sony learned from their mistake they made with the PS2 issues, there is not much to do for Sony anyways this generation stuck way back in 3rd.

I don't think MSFT would have a company that has never had the strongest hardware in any generation (in the game industry) build their console having a track record for failures in hardware.

No. They paid for the Exclusivity. There is a difference. Do you honestly think Bethesda and Rockstar would not have made the DLC if MS hadn't been there? The only reason MS gave those 2 studios money is so that the PS3 would not have the DLC. If MS had not been there both the 360 and the PS3 would have this DLC.

Exclusive DLC for a multyplatform game is just stealing.

Both companies would have released the DLC multyplatform for everyone to enjoy. MS comes along and says "Look! People like this game. Lets take it and not let anyone else have it." So, basically, they just pay the developers to not release a PS3 version.

I don't actually like ether games, Fallout3 or GTA4. I didn't finish 'em and don't personally care about the Exclusive DLC. It's the way MS does business that I find appalling, it's dirty and undermining. Sony makes games, MS stops other people from playing them.

I have arcade with jasper chip and HDMI. Brought 60 gig hard drive at $55 from ebay, so that I could install games on hard drive 'coz the disc noise is loud. Unless somebody gives me gift for live, I am not paying for live. Overall, I am still happy 'coz I get to play all the great games and my 360 runs very cool. In fact, I don't even feel any heat when I touch after 3-4 hrs playing.

it amazes me that some people here are surprised and even feel attacked when the RROD issue is mention. Are we supposed to just put up with faulty hardware because MS says so? and this slim rumors are garbage. MS did not fixed the 360 after 3 years. the slim version will never happen and if it happens they would have to revise the hardware, yeah right.

In 2 years time, I better be seeing the 720. IMO, MS would be better off phasing out both the arcade and the elite, lowering the price of the Pro to $199 and introduce the 720 @$399. I don't think it would be a good idea to even try it. They need to focus on what they have out now to make sure that it works the way it should. I am not flaming at all I have a 360 and wish I would have never had to ship it back 3 times. It funny about how both sides of the fanboys meet together in these types of articles. We should just let them fight it out and see who has bubbles left when the dust clears.

I agree with the people that say DLC is a waste of money and resources. Put that into your next game. I understand new maps and such but there is no point in making DLC for GTA4 when you just could have added that to GTA5. The DLC for Fallout 3 is just a crock of crap.

Although, the RROD was and is one of the most infamous hardware problem it has been rectified with a warranty and new improve models. What the PS3 brought us? Take out backwards comparability, connectors, crappy blue gay, Yellow lights, a dust magnet, BBQ Grill, lack of gaming experience, outrageous price tag, and fantards that dont know how to wipe their own rears. Almost all PS3 owners cant stand to see anybody elses machine been superior, because they know the fun its elsewhere. Poor soul looking for salvation, but they will see none because the PS3 Sucks.

It depends on how long this generation is going to last.

The last Xbox died about four years after launch. This year is going to be the 360's fourth year.

And with DVD 9 being severely out dated (come on! Rage-2 disks and still dubbed down, Lost Odyssey-4 disks, Star Ocean-3 disks, Blue Dragon-3 disks) I would say another 2 years max before Microsoft forgets the 360 and moves in to a new system.

But I guess it depends on how long this recession is going to last, because right now people don't seem thrilled to be buying a new system.
