Are Sony the smart ones in this console race?

whoelse of PS3 Attitude writes...

"There's no doubt that Sony has made mistakes this generation such as underestimating both Microsoft and Nintendo. Another mistake is relying too much on the brand image and not pumping out enough marketing.

However, if you have a look at the bigger picture, I think Sony are the smart ones in this console race, and I'm going to tell you why…"

Only thing i've noticed is they don't waste money on DLC they make new games instead so i'd say there 1 up on that

kevoncox3547d ago

Why would you consider it a waste? If it turns a profit who cares?
Here's the bottom line. Sony has made some major mistakes this generation and that's why they are in 3rd place. Microsoft has made some major mistakes this generation and that is why they could end up in 3rd place.

This generation will be a 6-7 years cycle for MS, If Sony hopes to survive, it better be a 5 to 6 year cycle for them. Sony needs to release the ps4 in 2011 or 2012. The Ps3 will still be churning a profit but Ms's decision to go dvd will force them to release a new console, one that will wipe the flow with the then 5 year old ps3.

I don't see Sony winning anything this gen based on the ps3 alone. However, when you combine their products they are doing ok.

Kratos193547d ago

I don't know if Sony are the smartest, that would probably be Nintendo. But I also like how Sony spend their money on developing entirely new games instead of WASTING it on DLC like.....well, we all know who does that.

GWAVE3547d ago

Sony has more 1st-party and 2nd-party developers under their umbrella than Microsoft and Nintendo combined. If I recall correctly, Sony has 23. How many does Microsoft have? 3? Nintendo? 7 or 8?

As a gamer, I'll side with the company that actually...you know...supports its console with exclusives and is set to do so over the long haul.

no Nintendo just gets lucky.

pumpkinpunker3547d ago (Edited 3547d ago )

The Xbox 360 had more exclusive titles than the PS3 in 2008 so how are they not spending money on exclusive titles. All the exclusive DLC is just icing on the cake. Let's look at the 2008:

360 exclusives

Banjo
Fable 2
Gears 2
Tales of Vesperia
Lost Odyssey
Too Human
Ninja Gaiden 2
Infinite Undiscovery
Viva pinata
Left 4 Dead

PS3:

MGS4
LBP
Resistance 2
Haze
Socom
Motorstorm 2
White Knight Story

Like I said, fanboys can talk, talk, talk but numbers are numbers.

@GWAVE

85% is a very arbitrary number I would rather go with 80% because I won't buy a title scored below that however I'll play your little game.

360: Left 4 Dead, Gears 2, Fable 2 (viva pinata just misses 85% by one point)

PS3: LBP, MGS4, and Resistance 2

However, if you go with the 80% cut off then the 360 was clearly ahead in 2008 for exclusive titles worth playing. So what is your point? numbers are still numbers.

GWAVE3547d ago

@ pumpkinpnker

And out of those games, how many scored above 85% on metacritic?

I mean, since scores matter so much...

Numbers are numbers.

Sony is riding the unstoppable success of the ps2. They created a system that is entirely different that could co-exist and is future proof to resist competition. They also established the HD Blu-ray movie market in the process. Nintendo found a new market of gamers (baby boomers and older plus young women) to co-exist with their traditional fans.

Both made top quality working hardware with quality first party software that demonstrates to developers how to maximize their systems hardware or controls.

callahan093547d ago (Edited 3547d ago )

Pumpkin, you're forgetting a few, let me help you out (just counting games released on disc of course, all of these except for Yakuza were released in English):

Disgaea 3
Valkyria Chronicles
Siren: New Translation
Ratchet & Clank Quest for Booty
Afrika (Hakuna Matata)
Aquanaut's Holiday
Yakuza Kenzan
Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds
Gran Turismo 5 Prologue
Buzz! Quiz TV
MLB 08 The Show
NBA 09 The Inside
SingStar vol. 1
SingStar vol. 2
SingStar vol. 3
SingStar ABBA

Now, you're forgetting some on the 360 too (Lips, You're in the Movies, Scene It: Box Office Smash, Kingdom Under Fire...), but I think I've proven my point: cherry picking doesn't help you make yours.

king dong3547d ago (Edited 3547d ago )

a story wrote especially for n4g just to be a hit generator for ps3 attitude. a blog in disguise, that's it! how is this news?

i'm not dissing sony, just the ridiculous fanboy opinion. designed to be A, a hit generator. B, a good ol pat-on-the-back circle-jerk fanboy thread and C, something to continue the ridiculous "console war"

a war were nerds have the chance to become frontline soldiers. it's this sh!t that needs to stop, and allow some normality, and sense to return to game web-sites.

slam the disagree button, take my buubles(no doubt that will happen), but deep down people know what needs to change.

gametheory3547d ago

"360: Left 4 Dead, Gears 2, Fable 2 (viva pinata just misses 85% by one point) "

"PS3: LBP, MGS4, and Resistance 2 "

You missed Valkyria Chronicles, pumpkinpunktard. I bet you are not even interested in Viva Piñata, but whatever.

pumpkinpunker3547d ago (Edited 3547d ago )

I wasn't going to get all desperate and list the titles most people don't care about or were complete shovelware. I mean, Singstar vol 1 to infinity each counting as seperate games? lol Ratchet and Clank: Quest for Booty was a PSN game. Should I list all the Xbox live arcade titles, too? Also, GT prologue came out in 2007 not 2008. Lastly, many of those titles only came out in Japan.

Sigh. More 360 exclusives part 2 (the games no one cares about):

Lips
the Last Remnant
Command and Conquer: Kane's Wrath
Command and Conquer: Red alert
Culdcept saga
dance dance revolution universe 3
dark messiah of might and magic elements
Deadliest catch: alaskan storm
frontlines: fuel of war
guilty gear 2: overture
Kingdome Under Fire: Circle of Doom
Naruto: the broken bond
scene it: box office smash!
Spectral Force 3: Innocent Rage
Supreme commander
Universe at War: Earth Assault
Warhammer: battle march
You're in the movies
Assault Heroes 2
Buku Sudoku
Chessmaster Live
Commanders: Attack of the Genos
Golf: Tee It Up!
Lost Cities
Omega Five

@gametheory
Is the namecalling really necessary, loser boy? I'm more interested in Viva pinata than valkyria chronicles, btw. Oh yeah, Braid (metascore 93) says hi, geek boy!

@fareastorient

Can you get them on your PS3? No, then kindly STFU. I don't want a console that I have to supplement with a gaming PC in order to have enough great games to play but you run with it.

FarEastOrient3547d ago

Pumpkin I don't how much schooling you have completed but games on that are also on the PC does not mean they are exclusive to one one system. So the list of Xbox 360 exclusives is drastically cut based on facts and how sales are recorded by NPD, Media Create, and retailers. If you're trying to create discourse please raise the level of your criteria.

ThanatosDMC3547d ago (Edited 3547d ago )

Exclusives are not "exclusives" if they're gonna be on your PCs.

"kindly STFU" <-- dont go that low. That's basically gonna screw up your comment and forehead hump you as an ignorant fanboy.

callahan093547d ago (Edited 3547d ago )

OK, Pumpkin, let me explain, then.

"Ratchet and Clank: Quest for Booty was a PSN game"
No it wasn't. It was made available on PSN in the United States, but it was a Blu-Ray release everywhere else in the world. The game was a 5 GB download in the US. It's not anything at all like an Xbox Live Arcade game. It counts because it was a disc-based release in all the other territories.

Gran Turismo 5 Prologue came out in 2007 in Japan, OK, but it was in late December of 07 and it came out in 2008 with way more content in every single other region of the world, so it counts as a 2008 title in my book.

All of those SingStar games were released individually on Blu-Ray discs, so they count. You don't have to like them, but they count.

The only games on my list that didn't come out in Europe or North Amera were Yakuza Kenzan, Aquanaut's Holiday, and Afrika. And of those, only Yakuza didn't get a fully English language release (I myself imported both Aquanaut's and Afrika, and any PS3 gamer who speaks English, Chinese, or Japanese can import those games and understand them, so just because they are Asia exclusive releases in 2008 doesn't preclude them from being listed as PS3 Exclusives from 2008).

And Hot Shots Golf, Disgaea 3, Buzz!, and Valkyria Chronicles are FAR from shovelware. They're all very highly rated games that have fan followings. I loved all 4 of those, personally.

But your expanded 360 exclusives list includes quite a number of xbox live arcade releases. I didn't include any PSN releases except for GT5Prologue, Siren & Ratchet and Clank, which all came out on Blu-Ray Discs, so they count as retail exclusives despite also coming out on the PSN in some regions. You really dug the bottom of the barrel to make your expanded list. I didn't do that. Off the top of my head I can think of a couple more PS3 exclusives released in 2008 that I didn't include before. Like Cross Edge and Initial D Extreme.

thats_just_prime3547d ago

TC what the hell are you talking about sony wasted money on getting exclusive mirror edge dlc and the game isnt even any good.

AS for the article it might as well be title "I'm a ps3 fanboy" it didnt give a single solid reason as to why or how sony is smart.

BattleAxe3547d ago

Sony is where they want to be. This generation they weren't concerned about winning the "console war", they were far more concerned about Blu-Ray adoption. The PS3 did its job to help Sony win the "Format War".

wow.. I didn't even realize how many 360 titles came out in 2008. I only got like 1/4 of that. But I did get a lot of XBLA titles.. those things are amazing.

Monchichi0253546d ago

Huh??? Am I missing something here cuz the last time I checked the latest NPD sales figures, both Nintendo and MS were wooping Sony's butt. Matter of fact, Sony was selling less PS3's this year then they did last year. I'm not saying this won't change, but PLEASE support your arguments with FACTS!!!

And with the world in an economic recession,I don't see your logic in how it's smarter to be the most expensive console on the block.

And the PSP being the halfway house for gamers???? PLEASE!! I own a PSP and can admit no real good games have come out for it lately. I use it more for other things then I do for gaming.

Geez, what a delusional fanboy from a fanboy site.

ultimolu3547d ago

Well, they're not stupid so...yes. I think they have a good strategy so far. Things didn't work out at first but it's slowly coming into play.

pumpkinpunker3547d ago (Edited 3547d ago )

They sold less PS3s during the 2008 holiday season than they did in 2007 while Microsoft sold more. Sony is posting it's first yearly loss in 18 years. People can talk, talk, talk but numbers are numbers.

@Gwave

It's a difference of business strategy. MS tends to pay other established studios to create exclusive games and publishes the titles while Sony buys the studios outright more often. Both companies do a combination of both. MGS4 was not produced by a Sony owned studio and it's probably their best title in 2008 so I don't see how the amount of studios a company owns comes into play.

Madgunner3547d ago (Edited 3547d ago )

it came into play for the PS2, yes things are different but no one should say sony will win / lose this gen or wind up 2nd, honestly its still to early PS3 has sold more than what the ps2 did in its TIMELINE when it initially launched so by THIS LOGiC ps3 may get to that 140 mil units that the ps2 is sitting on a bit quicker. bluray has become the next high def solution but has not YET become the standard in everyones homes, that will happen soon enough

EDIT Gwave very well put ^_^

GWAVE3547d ago

@ pumpkinpunker

I'm puzzled. You care more about sales numbers than console support?

As you said, the numbers are numbers.

Microsoft's studios: 3.

Sony's studios: 20+.

Yep. I'd say the numbers speak for themselves.

Hallucinate3547d ago

sony isnt in the bussiness to outright destroy the compition...unlike microsoft...so just take MS d1ck outta your mouth and realize that numbers are as fun as a wet sock

cayal3547d ago

"Sony is posting it's first yearly loss in 18 years."

Gaming division posted a profit.

Nope, Nintendo are. Since they outsmarted the competitiors and everyone who doubted them this gen. People will keep asking "how long will it last", like they've been doing since 2006.

*edit* Also I'd like to add that it's silly to point out one of them as "the smart ones" when all of them have made many smart and not so smart decisions this gen.

Blackcanary3547d ago

wow dude ur comments are coming out on point and straight to the point bubbles for u i agree with u again.

cayal3547d ago

I agree. Nintendo went against the trend of building a powerhouse console and released a casual console for cheap and everyone wants it.

N4g_null3546d ago

Great comment and bubbles to you. The truth is nothing is future proof. You can keep supporting it but the tech guys always move on. Had the PS3 came with more ram they could say that but just texture wise the PS3 is not getting the job done. You can't have textures like that on an HD machine. No matter what size media you have and how powerful your cpu is suppose to be you will need more ram to be future proof. I'd like to hear a developer say they have not maxed out the PS3's ram. I would love to work for such a talents set of developers.

I think SONY is smart enough to realize they do have fans that are stuck between consoles and PC games, it's too bad MS is there also. Sega was very smart when they came out with the dreamcast also yet got buried by the PS2. If SONY did not have to pockets or credit to keep going they would be a software house only.

Says you3547d ago (Edited 3547d ago )

Considering Sony has 8.5 million in Europe and Microsoft made a lot of mistakes and claims I can get it at gametrailers the list that they've said in the past and the new ones that they said like the 8 million lead or they own Europe which apparently they don't

and how did Nintendo made a smart move Jenzo there not even next gen there more like last gen competing with the PS2 the only thing that is next gen is the motion sensing and no disc drive.

cayal3547d ago

What does it matter if they are 'last gen' (even though they aren't). They have sold a ridiculous amount of consoles and made a lot of money.

How is that not smart business?

lokiroo4203547d ago

Hardware = they might just know a little bit more.

morganfell3547d ago

And he uses a flop game for his avatar. Nice bit of irony there.

Let's see, start a year later in the US, and a year and a half in the largest gaming territory. Might you be behind the first two years? Yes. But you western mind can't comprehend long term strategy. As such your bubble gum mentality is bamboozled by the Japanese sense of console longevity.

Hallucinate3547d ago

thats just not fair im NA and i completly understand sonys startagy..all those "wrong" decission there was probably a reason for it
