Sony is considering further price hikes for its products, in response to an expected 100bn yen (£513m) impact from US tariffs.

Agreed. If there is a price hike mohkt be $50-75 but most likely will stay the same. We have to take into account three consoles are 5 years old so they aee cheaper to produce now than when they came out in 2020

So with tariffs there may not be any profits/break even

It seems crazy that there were people willing to pay over $1k for the base PS5 when it was first released. Obviously that price was driven up due to lack of supply but still, I would never pay higher than retail for any system.

it already does after taxes here in Canada. $959 before tax. Even more if you want to use your physical discs.

Like I said in the XB price increase... I'm glad I already got it when I did. And don't shy away from the 2nd hand markets. I see 5's going for around $300-400. Sometimes with a stack of games.

Ah...I really want the pro but unlike with PS4 Pro, I don't feel like the improvement would be as massive. I just deep cleaned my PS5 too yesterday and it runs just like new - clean and quiet.

PS consoles are really built to last since the PS3 slim. My PS3 slim from 2010, Vita from 2011, another slim (One Piece SE) from 2012, launch PS4 from 2013, PS4 Pro (Spidey) from 2018 and PS5 from 2021 all still work. What a huge improvement from the frail original PS2 and PS3 phat.

I personally never upgraded from a PS4 to a PS4 Pro and I don't see myself upgrading to a PS5 Pro either - *however* - I might be tempted with the release of the third part of the FFVII Remake. But that's only a maybe and I wouldn't do so until I've upgraded my TV.

Like MS and Xbox, Sony is on the path to sell less consoles. Still waiting for Nintendo to raise the Switch 2 price in response of this tariff shit. I'm on the preorder list. I will not spend more than what was said at the start for the base console $449 if I get the email from Nintendo to preorder, hard pass if the price goes up.

I don't like being right about this sort of thing, but it was obvious to anyone looking at it objectively. It doesn't take an expert to see that if Microsoft wasn't going to eat the costs, why would Sony (or Nintendo, for that matter)?

You’re correct. If the trillion dollar company that is third place by a lot isn’t willing to absorb the cost, smaller companies will definitely consider not absorbing it either.

I said the same. I think the reason Sony hasn't done it yet is because they had overstocked in anticipation of tariffs. MS couldn't do it because they aren't selling any anyhow.

Speak for yourself. I’m wheel chair bound digital works best for me I’m not lazy. It’s so much easier to push the game icon and not have to get up and put a disk in. I have super fast internet. So it is my choice . You keep buying physical if you want that’s your choice. But digital is here to stay. So don’t be calling people lazy if they use digital.

The sad thing about those price hikes is that none of that money is neither intended or used to pay workers better.

I'd pay 700 bucks for a console if I knew that noone in the production line is being exploited anymore.

But those tariffs ...

Trump is a guy who is used to rip people off.

But he and people like him, ironically, hate it getting ripped off themselves.

These tariffs are purely driven by that.

I have a question. Tariffs only apply to physical goods, correct? More specifically physical goods that are imported. Shouldn’t digital games or anything digitally released be unaffected? If so, why are the digital prices same as the physical?

I get hardware. Like I’d honestly pay a one lump sum on a console knowing that the software prices aren’t affected. But that doesn’t seem to be the case and you seem to understand tariffs better than I, so I was wondering if you knew why that was.

Digital games could also be lended or sold to friends & other people.

It'd be absolutely in the realm of being technically possible.

But they don't do it. Because every digital game has to be bought individually through their one and only (!) digital store. And you can't even lend it to other people unless you give away your account.

It's greed. Nothing less.

And sadly, the discussions within the communities are going exactly where publishers want them to go:

It's about defending digital, downplaying physical.

Because people are too lazy today to go buy a game.

But cutting down our freedom as customers at the same time.

And in the end, noone wants to be responsible for an industry sucking us dry and raising prices as they see fit.
