SCEA COO Downplays Xbox 360 Lead

Sony Computer Entertainment America executive VP and co-COO Jack Tretton says a potential 6 to 10 million unit lead for the Xbox 360 isn't "a significant advantage or a significant disadvantage as far as we're concerned."

Tretton told TheStreet.com, "At the end of the day, what you do in the first year, and whether you do 6 or 10 million units does not determine whether you're successful or not. We're looking to sell 100 million-plus worldwide. We're looking to sell 50 million plus in North America."

Microsoft has announced that it expects to sell 10 million Xbox 360 units by the time the PlayStation 3 hits shelves in November.

MS was smart to launch early it gives people a chance to know what the 360's about with out being over shadowed by the house hold name of Sony. 100 Million sold is BS you will not sell that many console's with the now prooven 360 and the price of the PS3 wont help either. Sony has never once been the superior console on the market as far as performance goes. They were successful because it was decent passable quality, with a standard in Dvd, and always affordable compared to the competition. If the ps3 would have launched at 400 for the premium system...No matter if it was better than the 360 or not...they would win the next gen war. But they are doing things opposite to what made them successful the two prior generations. They are trying to be innovators and high tech. And with doing so their price is 600 dollars for their premier system. Sony's CORE fans will not spend 600 dollars for the ps3. Sony's hardcore fans WILL. But by the time the ps3 gets a price drop...360 and wii will have a huge market share and will be preparing for their next console launches. Sony dropped the ball big time. 10 million units means developers will be drooling to develop for the 360. That means if only 10% of 360 users by their game that is still a million sold. You have to cater to the system with the largest market share and that will make that system grow even faster. It is a cycle of growth that is why that 10 million mark is so important.

I also heard, Sony is going to make it impossible to resell used games. It will be a lot like computer software; you will own a licence to play the game but not the game itself. THE TRUTH is.......... Sony has NEVER launched first and always DOMINATED the competiton, that is a well known fact. So I can honestly see why Sony is not intimidating by 360's console lead. 360's price-point is not nessecarly a good point because by Christmas time it very easily be old news. People not interested in the PS3 could easily buy themselves a wii instead. The Wii will launch for less than 250$ and I feel 360's competetion will be with Wii more than PS3 at christams time.

Sony is comfortable lauching second because they have been there before, but M$ has shown that they are not as comfortable launching first due to the lack-luster launch titles 360 had. M$ is the one who needs to be in fear of BOTH Wii and PS3 because come christmas time both of these console will have mass appeal taking both the casual and hardcore gamers market at once. Well, I disagree about Microsoft "fearing" anything Sony or PS3 related - they are probably far more concerned about life AB (after Bill)....

The bottom line is "winning" in business is not who finishes #1 - it is who is in better health financially to fight another round. The math there is unequivocably in MS's favor. Figure the conservative estimates are that MS loses about $100-$150 per XB360 during the first 2 years on the market and Sony is losing anywhere from $200-300 per PS3. That is a lot of coin to bleed on every sale, no matter who you are....but in the end, even if Microsoft and Sony "draw" in this generation or Sony ekes out a close (few million unit) "win", Microsoft emerges in better overall shape.

The only thing that can save Sony here is a massive early-adoption of Blu_Ray as THE optical media. That is far from a sure thing, but obviously Sony has bet the ranch on the success of Blu-Ray at all costs...

People not interested in the PS3 could easily buy themselves a 360 for its games will look better based off of what was shown at E3 (Mass Effect GOW etc. and graphics is what the masses consider to be leaps in technology) or better yet buy a 360 and a wii for the price of a ps3 which is even better. I feel that the next gen seems to be heading like this: 360 will have the better games graphicaly and overall based off of E3 and Sony will only be able to ship 3 million consoles at the most in 2006 compard to microsofts 10-12 million. Also you said Microsoft's competition will be with wii, well I think the opposite in that ps3s main cmopetition will be with wii because if Microsoft has a foothold on America and Europe and nintendo is kicking its ass in japan then sony will have a problem because lets be real if anything microsoft can beat sony in america if not anywhere else and 360 is doing pretty wellin europe too and based of polls and price and the econonmy of the japanese wii can kick some ass over there in japan and if nintendo gains the most marketshare in japan then sony is going to have a problem. Sony has a powerful brand name but brand name doesnt beat common sense well at least for some of these hardcore sony fans but the reality is if you have two consoles and one is cheaper with the same qualty or better quality games( 2nd gen compared to launch) I think its clear what the avg. consumer will buy especially if most consumers are skeptical of the wii or as I said recognize the wii60 deal.

Hows what you're saying possible?, come Chrismas time how do you figure people and families spending close to one THOUSAND dollars for a PS3 as a gift to give to other people. The non gamers that will finally give-in and invest in gaming once all the cool stuff and hype from all the Killer APP's comes this Holliday season and shopper's will be focused on 360 aswell. What makes you think Joe-smoe's willing to spend eight hundred and fifty bucks for a console and a game tax and warrenty for somthing he's just getting into. The hype from all of the 360's accories and the smash hit 360 line up will not be over looked no matter how blind you force yourself to be. You can not double the price on the fanbase and expect everybody to jump in head first to purchase a PS3. Hardcore Sony fanboys and adult tech-junkies and a handful of rich spoild kids will be the only one buying a PS3 til the price drops. PS3 will be considered a huge investment like the HDTV's they'll have to buy to make PS3 worth the price. $900 bucks man thats most people Christmas budget kids and family members will be lucky if they get a 360 and some of the stuff coming out for it, this Christmas. You know it's a funny thing, i can remember being in looove with my ps2. I had it since launch. And yeah it's said to be the weaker of the last gen consoles but, i didn't care one bit. It was all i needed. I figured man if they make something better than this i'd just gotta have it. But once in a while i'd end up playing the xbox at one of my friends houses and they would be playing popular games, some in which i had for the ps2, but there was in fact some awesome differences. The first was the graphics were more crisp, they were online, and also, i noticed they were playing their own music. The last part really is what got me. I also remember playing SanAndreas and loving it. I didnt care about the xbox version having better graphics, but i did find my self wishing i could change the soundtrack. So one day i was saying i hope that the new ps3 would allow this, and i ended up getting an add with my ps2 magazine it was on the 360 i read it, i liked it alot, and i remember reading, you can rip cd's and make your own ingame soundtrack, my mouth droooooped, that was all i needed. So after trading in a boat loud of dvd's and some spare change, i preodered mine. I dropped lots of dvd's as payments every week til i paid off the balance it took maybe 3weeks maybe 4, that was the summer of 05 i actually paid it off with old dvd's and was done buy late july. I have about 4 games but its cool cause of the soundtrack. I play graw heavily lately and i have close to 500 songs on the harddrive 498 to be exact with 11gb left on the harddrive. I Love it. I mean yeah the software needs to build but other than that i know that i made the right decision and it just gets better. My point to all this was, i was actually anticipating the ps3 and if it wasnt for that xbox 360 booklet in my ps2 magazine i'd still be a ps3 fan. And now that i have my 360 and games and looking forward to new one's im very very content. Also im at the point were i wont even argue which is better because i know which one is better for me. That custom sound track is really really what i wanted and needed, blue ray isnt important to me by anymeans, thats not to knock it but that custom soundtrack is right up my alley. Sony advertises blue ray, and blue tooth, and thats nice, but the custom soundtrack, wirless controller, and xbox live along with the other things that ms offers brings a more complete gaming experience as far as im concerened. No that sony is offering their new system at six hundred bucks, no custom soundtrack, and a rumbleless controller, i know that i made the right decision i am truly happy. All the advertisement in the world from sony cannot shatter this for me, MS has really out done them selves.

I read that sony said if they had the kind of losses Microsoft had with the original xbox they would have reconsidered being in the gaming industry. Microsoft is in it for the gamers. They don't care about loosing money per console. They want to earn the gamers respect and they have done that. They have made a system thats easy to program for and gives gamers and experience that they can enjoy. Thus the high console to game attatch ratio that sonyfan boys never have a comment about.
