Nintendo Switch 2 Hardware Leak Reveals SoC & Benchmark Results For CPU and GPU

An analysis of the Nintendo Switch 2 SoC has been conducted by YouTuber Geekerwan, offering a detailed benchmark of the console’s CPU and GPU.

The GPU in particular is very weak. It offers about 75% of the performance of the lowest Ampere-based RTX 3050M from 2020, and even compared to the already underwhelming and heavily criticized Ada Lovelace refresh, it falls behind by roughly 10%. In terms of relative performance, it sits somewhere between the PS4 and the Xbox Series S. It’s also important to note that it likely uses slower LPDDR5 memory, which further limits its bandwidth compared to traditional desktop or console setups, though in larger quantity.

On the CPU side, things are much better. It uses the Cortex-A78C, which is a slightly more powerful variant of the A78 core found in older flagship mobile SoCs like the Snapdragon 888 (used in devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S21). The difference here is that the A78C features larger cores designed for sustained workloads, meaning better performance, though at the cost of higher power consumption.

Even with DLSS doing much of the heavy lifting, there are already reports of relatively lightweight games like Street Fighter V running at native 540p. So, I wouldn’t bet on the Switch 2 keeping pace with next-gen titles. For the current generation, however, it should hold up reasonably well, though once again, that’s largely thanks to DLSS quite literally carrying the GPU on its back.

What’s curious is that Nintendo seems to have flipped the usual console design priorities. Instead of favoring GPU power and cutting corners on CPU performance, as we often see, they’ve gone the opposite route: the CPU is fairly decent for its class, but the GPU is noticeably weaker than expected. This tells me that they might be preparing for a mid-gen refresh, or more likely a V2 variant with a more efficient GPU down the line.

Pretty much spot on, the only thing I would say is that CPU performance took big leaps over the last 5 - 8 years, especially in mobile. So all the consoles were going to have HUGE upgrades there, and thankfully, so the increase in CPU performance isn’t a surprise to me at all.

darthv7245d ago

I had a feeling it would be in the 4 / Pro range but not the Series S or even One X range.

spoonard44d ago

Not the PS4 Pro...just the PS4.

Sonic188145d ago (Edited 45d ago )

Lot's of optimization and DLSS will help the Nintendo Switch 2 with longevity. Nintendo really never focused on graphics or fps anyway. It's not like they're competing against Sony and Microsoft when it comes to graphics

Rage7745d ago

You say its weak, yet are parroting the same tired DF points, all of these are estimates of "close to baseline performance" Not representative of final output in the slightest. All these 2050 tests with starved ram and in the videos case (using A78AE instead of the Proper A78C which contrary to what some may say is not a simple label, but actually cut cpu performance in half) Of course this device wont compete and surpass a PS5, that wasn't the goal as to do that within the price range/power output would be ridiculous. But in mobile/portable sense, no matter what mobile chip its compared to, for the target need: sustained max performance (contrary to "bursts" for mobile)
This thing is a little monster. Which many will likely follow. More than the play on numbers PC/Nintendo haters (admit it you love to hate them) love to propagate, more telling is how 3rd parties are gravitating towards it (despite shitting all over past devices from Nintendo. It WONT beat/match a PS5, but please stop the "its Ps4" nonsense, don't embarras yourselves like DF is doing lately. Wait for final hardware/games/proper tests to judge.

Profchaos45d ago

I'll be getting one and my expectations were always around the PS4 pro region maybe with some vrr.

I think I'd prefer to be pleasantly surprised than disappointed

Vits44d ago

Kid, do yourself a favor and book an appointment with a doctor, either your reading comprehension is nonexistent, or your fanboy goggles are on so tight they’re cutting off circulation to your brain. Either way, that’s not normal.

I never said a word about the RTX 2050, never made any comparison to it, didn’t mention Digital Foundry, and definitely didn’t say "it's a PS4". But somehow, you managed to hallucinate all of that from my comment. Impressive, in a deeply concerning way. Get that checked.

anast45d ago

It's not running PS4 or Xbox series X games. Not even close. It has enough power to run Mario and Zelda and maybe GTA V on low low settings.

Profchaos45d ago (Edited 45d ago )

It'll run GTA v above what the PS4 version was have to remember that was a PS3 game running on the ps4 which itself had a mobile CPU which heavily impacted game frame rates

It will never run even the most cut down version of GTA vi but it could do rdr2

PanicMechanic45d ago

Thank you, very insightful breakdown is much appreciated

Neonridr44d ago (Edited 44d ago )

I'd love to see a downclocked 3050M run Cyberpunk 2077 for comparisons.

Vits44d ago

Well, a base 3050M 4GB (1792 CUDA) runs Cyberpunk 2077 at around 45 FPS at 1080p on medium settings with DLSS set to Quality, which means it's rendering at 720p native. CD Projekt RED has stated that the Switch 2 version will offer two modes, a quality mode running at 30 FPS and a performance mode running at 40 FPS.

We also know that, on paper, the Switch 2 is about 10% weaker than that 3050M. So if we assume it’s running the game at similar medium settings with DLSS on Quality for the performance mode, the numbers check out.

Now, that’s without ray tracing. I couldn’t find any information confirming whether the Switch 2 version will include it, but if it does, that would definitely change the equation. As RT tanks the performance of this 3050M, so it would need DLSS on Performance to even reach 30fps and would still be messy.

Neonridr44d ago

@Vits - I'm also wondering where you got your SFVI information from. We've seen comparison videos that show the Switch 2 closer in looks to the PS5 version and a considerable upgrade over the PS4 version of the game.

I'd be interested to know where you got your 540p from.

OtterX44d ago (Edited 44d ago )

I mean it's essentially a handheld that can also play on the TV. That's all I'm buying it for. I have no disillusions that it'll replace my PS5 or PC.

The odd bit is that the GPU although Ampere architecture actually follows the build design of the Lovelace 40 series so it’s definitely custom built specifically for the Switch.

CrimsonWing6945d ago (Edited 45d ago )

Yea, I’m ok waiting for a Black Friday deal on this.

NotoriousWhiz45d ago

Black friday deal will be launch price after tariffs push up prices later.

spoonard44d ago

Nintendo is eating the tariff markups. There will be no black Friday deals on ANY consoles.

Azfargh44d ago

Well, I am ok waiting to see an mint condition used console selling here. Probably in 3~4 years I'll consider it

CrimsonWing6944d ago (Edited 44d ago )

Hobby is getting out of control for pricing and the specs on this and the price they’re asking for and $80 games, it’s just absurd. I can’t give into this and support it, tarrifs or not, if people aren’t buying it, they will adjust prices for the market, that’s how it works. Hell consoles are usually sold at a loss. The fact that there’s variable pricing on games and seeing sh*t like Mafia and Clair Obscure being $50 games shows there’s something up and they’re just testing this out.

I can wait for sales or do exactly what you’re doing and wait to see used prices.

repsahj45d ago

This channel should be the new Digital Foundry. Just facts, no guessing, no lies, no bias, no annoying giggling. Let's wait for June 5 to confirm this.

Profchaos45d ago

Yeah the DF direct videos have led to some wild speculation I still love df retro but their core content leaves a lot to be desired

Storm2344d ago

I love DF personally. Cool to have more than one channel doing it though

mkis00744d ago (Edited 44d ago )

Pshhh. When someone doesn't agree with your assessment you are wrong.

anast45d ago

And they want $450. The PS5 digital was $400. Leave it to Nintendo to be Nintendo. No identity loss here.

Rage7745d ago

Until Sony copies Nintendo again and launches a portable so everybody can come make excuses for why IT WILL be overpriced and why it cant reach PS5.

Profchaos45d ago (Edited 45d ago )

It's a handheld not sure what anyone expects

Profchaos45d ago

I can't really play my ps5 on a plane though so it's not really in the same league here it's more in line with ROG and steamdeck

spoonard44d ago

I can play literally THOUSANDS of games on my Retroid Pocket though. Including Switch 1 games. For A LOT LESS than $450 + tax (over $500)

anast44d ago

You must fly a lot. It will be good for that small segment of the population that flies weekly, I suppose.

Mario Kart World’s Free Roam mode feels like an afterthought

Mario Kart World’s Free Roam is a fun distraction away from the main modes, best played in short bursts and not quite the 'open-world' it was initially billed as.

Yesyes6h ago

Hopefully the 2.0 update adds a collectibles tracker.

ZycoFox5h ago

8 years, 150+ Devs and the free roam mode is pretty empty.

What did they do with the time they spent developing the game?? How did they take 8 years? I refuse to believe it.

It sounds like the game may have been ready and they just held it back waiting for the Switch 2 to release.. which already released 2-3 years later than when it could've.

DivineHand1254h ago

"It sounds like the game may have been ready and they just held it back waiting for the Switch 2 to release."

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is just a slightly upgraded version of the wiiU version of Mario Kart 8. What you said is highly likely and this game was ready years ago. They just didn't want to cannibalise the sales of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe after it's huge success.

jjb19813h ago(Edited 3h ago)

I totally agree. They had this in the oven, hot and ready but left it out to stale for the Switch 2 release. They needed something to build the user base in the meantime for their upcoming 1st-party titles. $80, pffffft. Nintendo keeps Nintendo-ing.

shinXseijuro3h ago

I always like to remind people that a console generally takes between 5 to 8 years to be fully developed ! Taking into consideration that the previous build were heavily based on the normal switch which is easily 15 years old technology Mario kart world is something akin of early Xbox / ps4 gen which would match the timeline you mentioned with the game being easily 7 years old

shinXseijuro3h ago(Edited 3h ago)

It’s ok to disagree but if you are looking into making the conversation interesting and constructive please allow me to hear why you disagree. Wii U came out in 2012 And one for the first games the switch got games was a port of a Wii u game and the graphics still looked pretty much the same. Now that I’m remembering stuff a little bit more even Zelda was a Wii u game . Switch 2 is at max 2017 technology with a few extra perks

Lego 2K Drive>Mario Kart World👍

Si-Fly41m ago

Yeah okay 😂 I’ve not bothered with free roam in MKW, that’s not what I bought it for. But I have had a boatload of fun with my kids doing Grand Prixs and Knockouts, the new tracks are absolutely fantastic!

TheColbertinator3h ago

Free roam is typically pointless. Among the worst offenders are Mafia 2/3, GTA4 and Saints Row 4

Wow....1080p, you say? Nintendo always on the forefront of cutting edge technology. Take that, Sega Genesis!

andy8510m ago

Anything above 1080 on a tiny screen is overkill. Image quality to performance absolutely isnt worth it
