Microsoft is raising prices on Xbox consoles, controllers, and games worldwide

Microsoft is raising the prices of its Xbox Series S / X consoles, Xbox controllers, and even some new Xbox games around the world. Starting today, Microsoft says it has adjusted its recommended retailer pricing for its Xbox consoles and controllers worldwide, and that it’s also planning to adjust the pricing of some of its new first-party Xbox games this holiday season up to $79.99.

Gamepass is looking better every day. $80 For 1st party games is wild.

ABizzel11d 13h ago (Edited 1d 13h ago )

Crazy, crazy, times. Honestly if these companies were smart, as much as I would HATE THIS. This is their opportunity to push a digital future. If games at retail are going to be $80 - $90+, but $70 digital more people will start doing Day 1 digital to the point a disc drive becomes an optional attachment.

Nintendo set the tone, everyone else will not follow to cover any potential impacts on their businesses.

Amplitude1d 13h ago (Edited 1d 13h ago )

That's exactly what's happening. They're pushing up game costs to make subscription services make more sense. Makes no sense to buy a 100 dollar game when you get the game in an $30/m subscription.
This is the terrible future they've been trying to push us toward for years. Don't let them win.
Wishlist the 100 dollar games and buy them complete and patched in 2 years when they're 20 bucks.

crazyCoconuts1d 12h ago

Yeah I wouldn't be surprised on the digital front. It may be that no one wants to be there first one to do it

@amp, they wouldn't rob Peter to pay Paul. If game costs are going up, you'll see sub costs going up too.

VenomUK1d 12h ago

@ThinkThink "Gamepass is looking better every day. $80 For 1st party games is wild." I agree that for Xbox console owners who are not already subscribed then Game Pass become more worthwhile - for roughly the equivalent of three full price Xbox games. However, I suspect Game Pass will be a harder sale to people outside of the Xbox console ecosystem but using the Xbox app on Fire TV, iOS Samsung etc.

Extermin8or3_1d 10h ago

People saying it's to make subscriptions make more sense but I guarantee they'll go up in price at some point too, sometime soon.

darthv721d 9h ago

wow... Im glad i got my XB when I did and am a GPU member.

StoneColdCrazy1d 7h ago

well? steam hello 🙋‍♂️ digital it’s what make pc sells so strong.

Profchaos1d 7h ago

I think this wasn't Nintendo setting the tone but the reaction to international politics and economics

There's no way both Sony and Microsoft watched the reaction to mk world price and said hold my beer

neutralgamer19921d 2h ago

Amp

Started doing that 5 years ago. Buy the game 12 months later when it's in a much better state after all the patches. Many times you can get GOTY or complete edition for $20-25. I really think the greed of this industry will make it crash. Next generation consoles will cost $699 and disk drive will be sold separately. Controllers will cost $90-100 and games will be digital 75-80 and physical 90.

For those defending this just ask yourself this how come games cost more yet offer less than 10 years ago? Game development budgets have sky rocketed because these companies expect us to pay for their mismanagement

Now is the time AA publishers join the part and start releasing games at 50. We need THQ Nordic type studios. We need midway and THQ like publishers who use to make AA games

Buy the controllers now before they go up because all these XSX and PS5 accessories will be compatible with next generation. Walmart usually sells XSX controllers for $54.99

StormSnooper1d 12h ago (Edited 1d 12h ago )

You are already paying TWENTY DOLLARS per month for what? Like a couple of first party day ones per year? Few maybe? And assuming you would have bought each of those… and hopefully you are satisfied with what’s available to you for that price, because if you also actually buy games, then you’re really making unsound financial decisions

crazyCoconuts1d 11h ago (Edited 1d 11h ago )

I'm not a fan of subs in general, but in fairness GP has had an outstanding year and there's more ahead before the year is up. It can't continue like this imo, but holy crap 2025 (if you include late 2024) has been worth it at PC GamePass prices and if you typically buy COD annually

CrimsonWing691d 10h ago (Edited 1d 10h ago )

Clair Obscure was on Gamepass Day 1 and that was huge for me. Elder Scrolls Oblivion Remastered is next on my list. I’m a PS5 guy because they do get the better exclusives, in my opinion, but you have to be so anti-Xbox to not be able to see the value of Gamepass, especially in times like this.

darthv721d 9h ago

"you have to be so anti-Xbox to not be able to see the value of Gamepass"...

You do realize what site you are making this statement on... right?

peppeaccardo1d 11h ago

Strategic move from MS, Nintendo and SONY so that all of us can start enjoying the outdoors more. As for MS, not that they are selling Xbox much ... this is probably going to put the final nails in the coffin for their current gen hardware. Ad Majora ....

Christopher1d 10h ago

Because games don't go on sale and I 100% haven't heard any complaints from streaming services hiking up prices too high and that would never happen to a video game streaming service if it became more powerful. /s

jlove4life1d 10h ago (Edited 1d 10h ago )

Glad everything is an Xbox Am I right whose with me

northpaws1d 10h ago

@ThinkThink

It is just a balance sheet, when more people get gamepass, they raise the price of the gamepass. Whatever makes the most money for them, save for Sony and Nintendo, no exceptions.

Obscure_Observer1d 10h ago

"Gamepass is looking better every day. $80 For 1st party games is wild."

Indeed. Gamepass is the best value in gaming!

MDTunkown1d 10h ago

Didnt gamepass cost less a year ago ? And wont gamepass cost more next year ?

MDTunkown1d 10h ago

Can’t wait for $120 monthly subscription to not pay $180 for day one game release

Antnee5341d 8h ago

I wonder for how much longer because game pass being 19.99 isn't going to last much longer. I think by the end of this year it will 39.99 a month and that will kill the service

ThinkThink1d 4h ago

$24.99 by the end of the year is my prediction. If it ever were to hit 39.99 a month, the value would be lost.

Profchaos1d 7h ago (Edited 1d 7h ago )

But after 80 you own it and there's no guarantee that will put anything on the service you want to play while you still have to play for games that come out outside of the service.

So this year is great but the prior 2 were not and you have to pay for those years to

Kassanova071d 6h ago

You don't own the game unless you buy physical, you are paying for a license to play.

Profchaos1d 5h ago

@kassanova actually I more often than not buy physical it's only even doesitplay shows I can't play a game without downloading it I'll skip it or wait for a deep digital sake ie star wars outlaws which I'll likely never buy now

ThinkThink1d 4h ago

@Kassanova, yes, that's why it's cheaper. I don't think anyone believes the subscription entitles you to the game after you end the subscription service.

fr0sty1d 4h ago

This is what happens when you let the tangerine toddler start trade wars with all the countries that make this stuff...

ThinkThink1d 4h ago

Well, those other countries could always drop their tarrifs to zero, which would be reciprocal, but they won't do that because they like money.

Ps5conehead20h ago

The 2 TB Xbox is now more expensive than a PS5 Pro. I'm actively stunned...😮
*drops wallet and dust falls out*

StormSnooper1d 12h ago

Time to get a PS5Pro before tariffs hit lol

Kyizen1d 7h ago

PS5 Pro has 2tb also lol

Newmanator1d 13h ago

The irony behind this comment coming from Doge 😂

KyRo1d 8h ago

Gaming has never needed a crash so much as it does now. It will never happen but the suits need a reality check. They're literally pushing people away from gaming at this point in the way of greed.

"PS5 Astro Bot bundle for $450 and $70 first party games.

PS5 is suddenly looking like amazing value for money right now..."

Quote borrowed via twitter. He's not wrong though. The question is, will Sony follow suit, stay put or maybe a price drop?

DarXyde1d 13h ago

Sony will absolutely follow suit.

Modern Sony is exceptional good at following bad ideas.

So in addition to console prices never dropping and online service price hikes, we're getting a mid-generation SOFTWARE price hike.

I don't deny that games are becoming crazy complex and need big teams with crazy budgets, but read the room here. People are broke.

I'm getting ahead of myself here because Sony didn't even announce a price hike... But come on. Be real. We know it's coming.

MaximusPrime_1d 12h ago (Edited 1d 12h ago )

"Modern Sony is exceptional good at following bad ideas." - DarXyde

That is such a poorly researched and fanboyish comment.

StormSnooper1d 12h ago (Edited 1d 12h ago )

@Darxide
So you decided to forgo talking about MS doing this, to focusing on “Sony bad when they follow them”? At least wait before they do it.

Christopher1d 10h ago (Edited 1d 10h ago )

*** Modern Sony is exceptional good at following bad ideas. ***

That's why they are releasing their games day 1 on PS+SuperDeluxe and are porting their games day 1 to PC and are putting their games on Xbox and... wait, what were we talking about?

Now, tongue-in-cheek out of the way, Sony likely won't increase prices except due to tariffs. They haven't been funding their lower hardware costs to get a buy-in for market share and sell enough hardware to manufacture more hardware and keep costs lower because people still buy the hardware at a higher rate. But if Sony had less competition? Yeah, those prices would push the limits. Sadly, With Switch 2 coming out, they know they can't afford it and they aren't trying to get rid of hardware like Xbox is.

Cockney1d 6h ago (Edited 1d 6h ago )

In the uk you can pick up the astrobot bundle for £330, that makes the digital ps5 a £299 console, the point being the market has more sway on a products worth than the manufacturer. The pessimist in me thinks this is a move from Microsoft to make consoles too expensive to be relevant, if Sony follows suit I fear they'll get their wish

DarXyde21h ago

MaximusPrime_,

"That is such a poorly researched and fanboyish comment."

Fanboyish, you say? Of whom? I'm curious. At least offer some rebuttal or useful discussion instead of just saying "your comment sucks". Put a little more effort into a response, please.

StormSnooper,

"So you decided to forgo talking about MS doing this, to focusing on “Sony bad when they follow them”?"

I'm responding to a comment about Sony. I don't have much to say about Xbox here that hasn't already been said. Clearly, if I take issue with Sony doing it, I take issue with Microsoft doing it. Don't interpret me not addressing Xbox in my comment as me giving them a pass. I despise Microsoft for more reasons than the character limit would allow me to convey. This is just another reason, but again, I don't think I have any unique perspective here. I'm more concerned about the industry implications of their actions, and I think that's obvious in my comment.

"At least wait before they do it."
You might want to read my comment more carefully or work on your reading comprehension, mate. You must have missed the part of my comment directly addressing this: "I'm getting ahead of myself here because Sony didn't even announce a price hike".

@Christopher,

A thoughtful response. Cheers. I don't deny you're making good sense. My feeling here is Sony is probably going to increase the price of software because everyone else is now and it makes it easier to make games profitable. I consider that Plus has increased in price without any real improvement to the service offerings, we've yet to have hardware prices drop, Concord flopped, Sony's output has dropped noticeably, studios have been getting closed , and they seem to be much more skittish about risks (e.g., look at how quickly PSVR2 fizzled out). Even the departure of the in-touch execs in favor of more corporate minded leadership says, to me, that we're really in an era where profit maximization is king. Sony in the past has made plenty of goodwill gestures for their customers, but now, I don't really see it. Sure, we can say that I might be jumping to conclusions, but I don't think I'm wrong. Tariffs driving up prices is plausible for sure. Let's see what it means for digital pricing.

CrashMania1d 13h ago (Edited 1d 13h ago )

Wonder how the alt will spin this, sony did it in europe, australia and canada only and at a much less steep increase.

But hey who am I kidding, these companies will jump at any chance, sony may well follow suit anyway. Who's betting even if/when tariffs are reduced the price of all of this stays the same? Even so, a 600 Series X is wild.

crazyCoconuts1d 13h ago

Companies won't "jump at any chance" to increase prices, especially when sales are already down. That's not the way economics work. There's supply/demand curves and price elasticity. If demand is low and they're still increasing price, it's because they don't want to lose money. Costs are going up.

rudero1d ago

Ehhhh

Microsoft is hit harder than Sony.
Microsoft does not make their consoles or parts.
They import every aspect…
Where as with Sony, just the console is an import to the US.
Sony producing their console is not hit by the tariffs at all unlike Microsoft.

crazyCoconuts14h ago

As far as i can tell, MS hasn't assembled consoles in the US since the 360. The parts and assembly is all done in China I think. Sony has a mix, China and Japan. At least that's what i got with some limited googling.

Outside_ofthe_Box1d 10h ago

Can't say that Sony "led the way" this time lol

This is nail in coffin for him.

This isn't surprising after the Switch 2 reveal, but I was expecting it happen at the start of next gen though. Sony will definitely follow suit soon unfortunately

Relientk771d 13h ago

Is that a joke? I'm not paying $80 or $70 either for games. I can wait for sales. So far this year I bought the Suikoden HD Collection, Lunar Remastered Collection and Clair Obscur Expedition 33 for $50 each and $55 for Lunar. Also, shout out to JRPGS because they're killing it this year.

jznrpg1d 13h ago

Those are the 3 games I bought recently! Whack a mole is killing me in Suikoden 2.

Eonjay1d 13h ago

My thing is that the whole reason they are focused on PlayStation is because they sell games on PlayStation. But like... won't this move cause the to sell even less on Xbox and PS5?

The_Blue1d 12h ago

Let them find out the hard way.

Kassanova071d 6h ago

The moment all our backlogs emerge! A great reason to catch up and make a dent. No way in hell I will support these price hikes. The only game worth full price is Clair.

Soy1d 3h ago

Suikoden and Lunar are also just remasters of old games. Expedition 33, props to them for the price and the success.
