Microsoft is raising the prices of its Xbox Series S / X consoles, Xbox controllers, and even some new Xbox games around the world. Starting today, Microsoft says it has adjusted its recommended retailer pricing for its Xbox consoles and controllers worldwide, and that it’s also planning to adjust the pricing of some of its new first-party Xbox games this holiday season up to $79.99.

Crazy, crazy, times. Honestly if these companies were smart, as much as I would HATE THIS. This is their opportunity to push a digital future. If games at retail are going to be $80 - $90+, but $70 digital more people will start doing Day 1 digital to the point a disc drive becomes an optional attachment.

Nintendo set the tone, everyone else will not follow to cover any potential impacts on their businesses.

However, I suspect Game Pass will be a harder sale to people outside of the Xbox console ecosystem but using the Xbox app on Fire TV, iOS Samsung etc.

Started doing that 5 years ago. Buy the game 12 months later when it's in a much better state after all the patches. Many times you can get GOTY or complete edition for $20-25. I really think the greed of this industry will make it crash. Next generation consoles will cost $699 and disk drive will be sold separately. Controllers will cost $90-100 and games will be digital 75-80 and physical 90.

For those defending this just ask yourself this how come games cost more yet offer less than 10 years ago? Game development budgets have sky rocketed because these companies expect us to pay for their mismanagement

Now is the time AA publishers join the part and start releasing games at 50. We need THQ Nordic type studios. We need midway and THQ like publishers who use to make AA games

That's why they are releasing their games day 1 on PS+SuperDeluxe and are porting their games day 1 to PC and are putting their games on Xbox and... wait, what were we talking about?

Now, tongue-in-cheek out of the way, Sony likely won't increase prices except due to tariffs. They haven't been funding their lower hardware costs to get a buy-in for market share and sell enough hardware to manufacture more hardware and keep costs lower because people still buy the hardware at a higher rate. But if Sony had less competition? Yeah, those prices would push the limits. Sadly, With Switch 2 coming out, they know they can't afford it and they aren't trying to get rid of hardware like Xbox is.

In the uk you can pick up the astrobot bundle for £330, that makes the digital ps5 a £299 console, the point being the market has more sway on a products worth than the manufacturer. I'm responding to a comment about Sony. I don't have much to say about Xbox here that hasn't already been said. Clearly, if I take issue with Sony doing it, I take issue with Microsoft doing it. This is just another reason, but again, I don't think I have any unique perspective here. My feeling here is Sony is probably going to increase the price of software because everyone else is now and it makes it easier to make games profitable. I consider that Plus has increased in price without any real improvement to the service offerings, we've yet to have hardware prices drop, Concord flopped, Sony's output has dropped noticeably, studios have been getting closed , and they seem to be much more skittish about risks (e.g., look at how quickly PSVR2 fizzled out). Even the departure of the in-touch execs in favor of more corporate minded leadership says, to me, that we're really in an era where profit maximization is king. Sony in the past has made plenty of goodwill gestures for their customers, but now, I don't really see it. Sure, we can say that I might be jumping to conclusions, but I don't think I'm wrong. Tariffs driving up prices is plausible for sure. Let's see what it means for digital pricing.

Companies won't "jump at any chance" to increase prices, especially when sales are already down. That's not the way economics work. There's supply/demand curves and price elasticity. If demand is low and they're still increasing price, it's because they don't want to lose money. Costs are going up.

There was a monitor that I wanted but I already have a nice HDMI 2.0 monitor that has great color and pretty good HDR, I didn't buy a new LED 2.1 monitor because I didn't really need it, and also have been waiting for the price to come down on OLED instead of buying 2 monitors. When things rise in one area it effects everything. Trump makes it cost more to do business with America that cost lowers the sales/profits/currency valuation of other parts of the world, that in turn means that everything goes up.

If the cost of grain goes up, if the cost of bread goes up then the cost of sandwiches goes up, then people buy less sandwiches which causes the GDP to go down, which causes currency to be devalued. Now when the cost of grain, iron, lumber, energy, rare metals, parts and everything else goes up it snowballs.

That is one basic example of how Trump's tariffs and economic destabilization effects everyone.

Your comment doesn't make any sense because the increase is a result of the tarrifts. Xbox consoles are made in China so those of us who were paying attention already knew this was inevitable. There is talks of an exception for some electronics from China but it wasn't clear if gaming hardware is included.

Eventually PlayStation consoles will go up in the USA now that Microsoft has made their move so why are you trying to score a victory lap?

When we all saw what Nintendo did with the prices of some of their games, MS couldn't wait to announce similar prices. Why? Because they want you subscribed to a service. It's all about control. I can see PlayStation and Xbox charging $80 for games just a tiny bit. I'm mean tiny because of the budget of games. The thing I don't like is that we are getting essentially two price hikes in one gen. Not good.

But Nintendo lol. Ain't no way. They are charging this gen prices on everything, with last gen looking games at best. And on top of that, when DF did a comparison on games, they used the PS4 versions. Make that make sense. Sometimes I feel like I'm not living in the real world. And to top it off, the Switch 2 will be over $100 cheaper in Japan. If this were Sony on Xbox the Internet would shut down lol.

People somehow want handheld gaming to be the future but it looks like to me that we will just be going backwards if we go that route. Just my opinion and no disagrees from me. At the end of the day, gaming is an expensive hobby and I'm grateful to be able to afford to participate.

I don't need everything day 1, my backlog is huge, and I can wait until games go on sale. I literally just picked up Alan Wake 2 for $30 (PS store) and Dragon's Dogma 2 for $28(Amazon). I only have so much time in a day and a life outside of gaming. Happy gaming y'all.

I will get cooked here for saying this but look at the cost of games from the 80's and 90's. Adjusted for inflation, a $49 in 1995 would cost $104.90 USD today. I'm not trying to justify the price increase but just demonstrating how costs in things have gone up just by inflation alone, not including other variables like labor wages, etc.

You have to bear in mind that most of the cost of games back then was caused by the expensive cartridges and retailer margins. It is one of the reasons Nintendo chose to screw over Sony with the disk based Nintendo console because they would lose all that revenue. Nintendo would collect the ROM from developers and then manufacture those cartridges.

I remember spending my allowance on clay fighter 64, getting home and being so sad how shitty it was. Scarred me deep lol. Same with Bubsy 64. I'll continue to subscribe to gamepass until it goes above $30. I still buy games outside of gamepass, they just have to be games with good replay value.

Gaming is in for a run into wall. Imagine the next generation of consoles. 800$ for console? 90$ for games? 280$ yearly subscriptions.

I think we are reaching a gaming bust. The wages doesnt catch up. And gaming isnt the only sector. I think we are gonna see a deep decline because people cant afford it. Gaming entusiast can, but not to my for youre kids or the casuals.

The design of the series xboxs is more expensive due to the size of the chip, which is why playstation is less affected to this point by the situation. Narrow and fast vs wide and slow. Silicon costs money and making a bigger chip in hindsight wasnt a good idea, the pro vs 2tb x comparison I'd the case in point to end all arguments.

Oh, yeah, bet your bottom dollar Game Pass Ultimate price will go up. By holiday season this year it'll be $29.99 US minimum if not $39.99 US. Especially when they see the Switch 2 game sales irregardless of price increases. That and the release of GTA 6 $79.99 US for the base addition sells like hot cakes. Those sub prices are going up. They'll need it to help recoup the losses on hardware sales they've had since the Xbox One. That and the ridiculous Activision purchase all while trailing in a distant last place in the console gaming landscape.

This is unacceptable, games are getting uninteresting, poorly optimized, no innovation whatsoever, except for some indies, and speaking of indies, a indie developer just proved that a small crew can develop a AAA game too and sell it for a fair price without micro transactions and still make a profit.
