Sounds good, although I don't see how Mark of the Wolves playead it safe when every character apart from Terry was brand new.

That was precisely one of the concerns, keeping Terry but adding a completely new cast, with a lot of characters that the FGC felt were "gimmicky". It also removed a lot of mechanics from other Fatal Fury games; Two-lane switching was removed, they trimmed down the inputs, and most of the mechanics were simplified. The animation was also "flat" compared to SF3, and it was mostly the same as the last games. Where, compared to SF3, Capcom took some major risks adding the parry system, giving characters multiple super arts per each character (I wasn't the biggest fan at first), juggles that added flash and more damage if you could pull them off, perhaps the best visuals and animation seen in a 2D fighter for a very long time.

Comparing Garuo vs SF3, there's where people pointed out that SNK played it safe.
