Been keeping my eye on this game for a while but never took the plunge and bought it because it seems to get a lot of stick from the community that the devs are all talk and no action. They’ve been promising an awful lot but not actually releasing anything new so maybe an easy way out??

Should fans charge money for fangames? Because that what mods are, content made by fans, nothing else.

Fan games are simply infringing on the original creators’ rights, while modders have the permission to monetize their modifications.

Sometimes they do..but there are more than enough games with no official mod support. Take all the (excellent) costumes /skins fighting games like Tekken, Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat have for their PC versions as example.

Capcom even went so far to update years old games this week with a software patch that (tries) to prevent modders from being able to use mods in their games.

Thats why I made the comparison with fangames.

This "issue" has had a solution for decades. You credit the modders, and modders accept donations. Some mods are paid, that's up to the modders, if a console game wants to cater to that, that'd have to build in a whole storefront for that and I just don't see that happening. I'm also not fond of Bethesdas approach if skimming money off the work of others especially when the modders doesn't even charge for the mod themselves.

Yep, I agree with the donations business model but don't mind paying a single payment if required, depending on the mod. I see people charging for outfits in some games (Resident Evil remakes). In the past people would have offered these for free. Each to their own I guess. Also things like Patreon, Itch etc has made it much easier for modders/developers to cash-gate their wares compared to in the past.

If they can do a better job than the devs. (which happens more often than not) yeah I wouldn't mind if their not too greedy.

Im not opposed to the idea depending on how much effort went in to creating it but how do we gauge that? And we all know how humans are, This is all a slippery slope, from horse armour to loot boxes, not the exact same thing but you get my drift. People get VERY greedy.

An yet is that a bad thing? Developer will get more sales since some people will buy the game to play with the mod where otherwise they could discard it completely, modder earns money for his efforts so more great mods get developed, and gamers get to play some of their favourite games in VR where original developer never planned to release a VR mode. Everyone wins, where's the problem?

@riseNShine, not long after this article was published, LukeRoss got hit with a cease and desist from Take2 over his R* games mods. Yeh sure, "everyone wins where's the problem?" Some people and the law doesn't always agree with others making bank from IP's they don't own even if all they are doing is modding. Might have been a different outcome if he wasn't charging people.
