Bungie, the Best Solution to Tackle Proximity Chat Toxicity in Marathon Already Exists

Bungie is forgoing proximity chat in Marathon to avoid toxicity more than anything else, and the solution to that exists, and it's the mute button.

AuraAbjure51d ago (Edited 51d ago )

Proximity chat was one of absolute best things about Halo 2 back in 2005. There was nothing toxic about it unless someone was a 100% complete wussy in which case they were supposed to get the frick out of the kitchen on the double- no detours- if they couldn't handle the heat. It is the duty of the tactful soldier to get the opponent to "rage quit" as soon as humanly possible obviously for advancement purposes. Who is the toxicologist Bungie hired anywho in order to try and navigate toxicity? Let me guess, some kind of proponent of immunosuppressants right? Just silence everybody and mute everybody and suppress the immune system and mask everybody up and duct tape everybody's mouths shut and pretend uncomfortable subjects will just resolve themselves sans adequate dissemination right?

Pathetic to think some adults still believe they can live on top of their refrigerators forever given current American military culture obviously suppresses qualms and emotionality alike left and right. When was the last time a general in the US military was convicted of any serious crime? Are they saints or something? I swear this culture of merciless suppression has reached the boiling point already and one of the only avenues left to express oneself maybe Congressional testimony which is sad because every member of Congress is of course bought and paid for. I say now that it is painfully apparent for anybody with vision that the final hope this country has of breaking the Alexander Tytler Cycle is the organic ascension of the first ever living six-star general (of the armies.)

gamers are soft today. Who cares if someone talks sh*t to you. 2007 CoD 4 MW lobbies where 1000 times worse then today.

It’s Just Over For ‘Marathon’

Marathon has always been teetered on the edge of future failure, but now that seems set in stone after recent events.

Paul Tassi is a known xbox/MS stooge.

Saying that, Marathon looks so meh to me, absolutely no interest at all.

JEECE18d ago

Once he wrote an article characterizing Horizon Forbidden West, which came out over a year after the PS5 released, as a PS5 "launch game." Assuming this was just a mistake, I pointed out to him that "launch games" for a console are widely understood to be the games that come out on the day of a console's launch or in the immediate window thereafter. He responded and told me that he understood "launch game" to mean a game that launches, which would mean that every game that releases on a console is a "launch game" for that console.

I've basically ignored everything he has said since then. But I don't care about Marathon either way; playing Hunt: Showdown turned me off this genre pretty much.

Killer2020UK18d ago

He sounds like a stubborn moron

babadivad17d ago

It's releasing on Xbox...

Notellin17d ago

He's a Sony and Destiny fanboy. Has been forever. He plays Destiny 2 on PS5, what are you even talking about?

If I was running Sony why would I not try to have bungie reboot Killzone and have it as their Halo. Honestly I don't know how Sony could justify that 3.6 billion purchase price. Insomniac games at 256 million has been their greatest acquisition in Playstation history for what they have already delivered and what's the pipeline

Profchaos18d ago

The smart money would have given them killzone but they brought them to be a pillar of their live services investment and seeming have no interest in allowing them near a single player story driven game again.

Lightning7718d ago

The bigger mistake imo is not having them do any SP projects. Just all LS stuff.

Also want to clear up some misinformation on my part about Marathon. It wasn't due to creative differences as to why Jade left it was due to early internal Play tests were reportedly not received very well. Which probably prompted her to leave. My fault on that.

Ghostwood18d ago

It does look like ass shit.

Would pulling the plug now make any difference or is Bungie thoroughly cooked regardless?

peppeaccardo18d ago

Since when Forbes is relevant for the gaming community?

Profchaos17d ago

Have a read and you can't say they are not wrong.

I had a read and it was pure hyperbole

New ‘Marathon’ Info: Bungie Morale, Launch Worries And Changing Plans

After a rough playtest and now plagiarism confirmation, Bungie is changing some Marathon plans and internally, things are bad.

Goodguy0119d ago

Wish they'd just go back to making a simple fps game like halo. As much as I loved destiny 1, it got absolutely stale and a chore to play after the sequel came out. I ain't got that kinda time to waste so much on a single game with it's crazy grind and raids.

Just make a great story singleplayer game with co op optional. Add in traditional classic pvp. Support with some new maps and weapons for a couple of years. That's it. Move on to the next game and make a new great singleplayer story sequel with it. Unfortunately every dev thinks an fps game needs to be fully live service and chase trends.

RaidenBlack18d ago (Edited 18d ago )

Or even go back earlier and make lore heavy Marathon(s) again, with similar gritty art style?

JEECE18d ago

In your estimation, what was the last fps game to follow the traditional release model (rather than live service) you described in your comment, and actually maintain a solid player base outside the immediate release window?

I guess you could say Warhammer Space Marine 2 fits that category, although it's playerbase is I'm sure much lower than what Bungie would call a success.

crazyCoconuts18d ago

Space Marine 2, despite not being huge, is still better success than this dead on arrival bull crap that we all knew would fail.
I'm not sure why having a persistent player base is required for success. Just make more money then it cost for you to make it.

Noskypeno17d ago

I hate how companies just view us as nothing more than math equations. Just make a game you want to play and chances are it'll sell millions with good marketing and the name behind it. Greed and lack of creativity is what's killing gaming(which is ironic since so many of these types of games don't make money) unless you make a turn based game which not everyone is into.

Sciurus_vulgaris18d ago

It really sad that a dev would simply slap a classic IP name onto something completely unrelated. While I may come off as being overly pessimistic. I very firmly believe Bungie’s upcoming “Marathon” will not do well. It’s not getting the hype and engagement needed for a successful live-service game.

CrimsonWing6918d ago

We, uh, gonna start throwing in the towel for GaaS stuff, Sony?

crazyCoconuts18d ago

Not yet... There may be one or two studios yet that haven't been completely derailed

OhReginald18d ago

Nah at this point it's like fighting a hydra. Cut off one of the heads (Firewalk Studios) and another grows in its place ( TeamLFG).....

vTuro2417d ago

If their games follow the same design philosophy as Concord and Marathon then they'll bomb just as hard. If they do then honestly I'd just cancel them right now if I were Sony and eat the loss, and save whatever face possible.

anast18d ago

I knew this game was a stupid idea.

goken18d ago

I wonder how many ways they want to take the same arena slap a different coat of paint on it and fail, before it occurs to them to try something else…
